Any CS educator has to explain sooner or later a portion of code or a structured text to learners. The Codecast tool http://*** has been specially designed by CS educators and developed initially for MOOCs to replace non-interactive screencasts. This workshop is a hands-on lab to Codecast: an open-source innovative tool to create in-browser interactive coding tutorials. Codecast supports syntax highlighting for over 110 languages and as of 2017 can compile/interpret and execute a subset of the C and Arduino languages. In this workshop, participants will explore how, using our Codecast tool, a CS educator can explain the creation of a computer program while their audio as well as their interactions with the code editor and interpreter are being recorded for interactive playback. Workshop participants will furthermore experience how different aspects of the coding process like testing, running, debugging and optimizing can be illustrated with the help of several data, memory and algorithm visualization modules. Participants will create recordings and experience (like learners) how they can be played back interactively by taking control over and modify the coding process at any time. Codecast enables the learner to interact directly with the code and experiment with different ideas while listening to the instructor's explanation. The learner can make changes to the code, test it with different inputs, run the code step-by-step to better understand its behavior and visualize other parts of the algorithm or the data. Workshop participants will also integrate their creations in their online curricula.

Universities are facing many challenges with growing student numbers and a need to modify the traditional lecture and tutorial-based face-to-face pedagogical style both for students who work full-time while studying and for international students who may have language difficulties. To address these challenges, a flipped classroom pedagogical model was trialled in a second-year module in a Construction Management undergraduate degree program. The model consisted of preclass online quizzes, in-class face-to-face lectures, group tasks, active learning spaces, adaptive online tutorials and a case-based assessment. Evaluation findings suggest that preclass activities are an important feature of a flipped classroom to actively engage students in independent learning and to help them construct their own knowledge. Findings also highlight the significance of physical space to facilitate collaboration and interactions between students, improve their learning experience, and inspire students to learn in an active environment. The findings have implications for both educational developers and academics to support the development of open, online, and blended learning courses and to deploy, implement, and evaluate higher education courses.

Subtitles and captions have been used to aid second language learning. This study focuses on the effects of subtitles and captions on English Language Learners' ability to learn information literacy skills and apply those skills using an interactive tutorial. Three groups of Turkish university students majoring in English Language and Literature completed a tutorial on ACRUs Framework scholarly conversations. One group completed the tutorial with an English soundtrack and no titling;the second group completed the tutorial with an English soundtrack and English captions;and the third group completed the tutorial with an English soundtrack and Turkish subtitles. Using Morae software, the students were recorded and evaluated for time-on-task and correct completion of the interactive practice elements. The group that viewed the tutorial with an English soundtrack and Turkish subtitles completed tasks at a statistically significant faster pace than other groups and with statistically significant more success.

Recent years have seen a rapid development in e-learning technologies. Specific topics;however, may require additional teaching tools created particularly for their unique characteristics. It is important that these tools are developed with learning outcomes in mind, and if possible are in a format easily accessible. We have developed graphic web applications for the teaching of liquid-liquid equilibria, single- and multi-stage liquid-liquid extraction using ternary phase diagrams. These applications allow students to draw liquid-liquid 2 phase equilibrium curves, calculate phase separation for a given mixture and graphically determine equilibrium stages;the correct results are then produced with hints for the students if they get stuck. Student usage figures and opinions have been collected for the application during trial use on a combined full-time taught and distance learning course in Engineering Separations at The University of Manchester. The current students have found these applications useful for developing their understanding of liquid-liquid equilibria. (C) 2017 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. From the perspective of parallel mixed-methods research, this paper describes interactivity research that employed usability-testing technology to analyse cognitive learning processes;personal learning styles and times;and errors-and-recovery of learners using an interactive e-learning tutorial called Relations. Relations presents mathematical content for Theoretical Computer Science 1. It incorporates instructional content, scaffolding to support learning, worked examples and exercises. The findings from combining quantitative and qualitative studies were synergistic as they confirmed each other and also complemented each other when one data collection strategy provided insights and details not obtainable from the other. Data was mapped against concepts from the literature. This work makes methodological and practical contributions.

In a few short years, the Internet (in terms of the World Wide Web) has become a powerful informational resource for the original scientific literature pertaining to biological investigations using the laser scanning confocal microscope. However, there still remains an obvious void in the development of educational Web sites targeted at beginning students and novices in the field. Furthermore, many of the commercial aftermarket manufacturers (for example, those offering live-cell imaging chambers) have Web sites that are not adequately represented in published compilations, and are therefore somewhat difficult to locate. In order to address this issue, several educational sites dedicated to optical microscopy and digital imaging that are being constructed and hosted at The Florida State University are currently turning their attention to the increasing application of confocal microscopy in the biological and materials sciences. The primary focus of this effort is to create new sections on the existing sites that address the important educational issues in confocal microscopy, as well as creating indices of links to both the confocal scientific literature and the Web sites of manufacturers who supply useful accessories. less

This paper describes an online laboratory for a course on electronic devices and circuits aimed at complementing classroom teaching of undergraduate courses. The development is based on four levels of teaching, viz., lecture notes, interactive tutorials, simulation exercises, and performing a real experiment remotely. The current facility has been developed to support an undergraduate theory course, "Electronic Devices and Circuits" as a pre-laboratory session for a regular on-site laboratory. It can be also used as an alternative to a traditional laboratory especially for distance education programs, or for interdisciplinary first year courses not having lab component. The facility has also been developed as a teaching tool for classroom demonstrations.

MyPyTutor is an interactive tutorial system for the Python programming language. The system provides support for both students doing tutorial problems and tutorial developers. MyPyTutor can be used in two modes: stand-alone or with online support. For courses where MyPyTutor is used for assessment it can be set up so that students submit correct solutions to problems online for marks.
