This paper proposes the analysis of the ringdown electromechanical oscillations occurring in power systems through the two-point interpolated Discrete Fourier Transform (Ipdft) algorithm for damped sinusoids. In particular, the frequency and the damping ratio of the modes of interest are estimated. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is compared with that of a rather standard technique, i.e. the Prony algorithm, in order to evaluate the main advantages and disadvantages of either approach under different operating conditions. The results of several simulations show that the Ipdft algorithm is preferable when the signal-to-noise ratio is low or moderate, whereas the Prony algorithm is more robust to spectral interference when the oscillating modes are closely spaced in frequency.

In this paper the influence of the spectral image component on the amplitude estimator provided by the three-point interpolated Discrete Fourier Transform (Ipdft) algorithm is analyzed in the case of a pure sine-wave. The expression for the amplitude relative estimation error due to the above contribution is derived when the sine-wave is weighted by a Maximum Side-lobe Decay (MSD) window. Furthermore, the accuracy of this expression is verified and compared by means of computer simulations with that derived when the two-point Ipdft amplitude estimator is used.

In this paper analytical expressions are derived for the synchrophasor amplitude and phase estimation errors achieved by the interpolated Discrete Fourier Transform (Ipdft) algorithm when a steady-state harmonically distorted waveform at off-nominal frequency is weighted by a Maximum Sidelobe Decay (MSD) window. The derived expressions allow to separately analyze the contributions of the fundamental spectral image component, harmonics, and off-nominal frequency on the estimator Total Vector Error (TVE). Also, the related curves depicted in the plane of relative amplitude error and phase error allow to visually assess the overall accuracy of the Ipdft phasor estimator in the case of either pure sine-wave or harmonically distorted sine-waves. These curves are useful to analyze the robustness of the Ipdft algorithm to off-nominal frequency and harmonics.

The paper investigates the accuracy of the synchrophasor estimation provided by the interpolated Discrete Fourier Transform (Ipdft) algorithm under both steady state and dynamic conditions. Dynamic performances of the proposed algorithm are evaluated using the test signals suggested for the M-class performance in the IEEE Standard C37.118.1:2011 about synchrophasor measurements for power systems. In all the performed tests the achieved Total Vector Errors (TVEs) are always smaller than the related accuracy thresholds specified in the Standard.

In this paper the accuracy of the synchrophasor estimator returned by the enhanced frequency-domain linear least-squares (e-FLLS) algorithm recently proposed in the scientific literature is investigated. Harmonically distorted or modulated electrical signals at off-nominal frequency are considered either in the presence or absence of additive wide-band noise. The e-FLLS algorithm is based on the rectangular window and it estimates the phasor amplitude and phase using three Discrete Fourier Transform (dft) samples. It effectively reduces the detrimental contributions of both the fundamental image component and wide-band noise on the estimated parameters. The accuracies of the e-FLLS algorithm and the corrected interpolated dft (Ipdftc) algorithm are then compared to each other through computer simulations in different operating conditions. As accuracy parameter the Total Vector Error (TVE) is used.
