The analysis of laminated plates using distinct advanced discretization meshless techniques

Composite laminated plates are structural elements with a high strength/weight ratio, being very popular in the aeronautic industry. This work analyses such structural elements using the finite element method, an approximation meshless method (the element free Galerkin method) and three interpolation meshless methods (the radial point interpolation method, the natural neighbor radial point interpolation method and the natural radial element method). Here, the displacement field of the plate is defined by an equivalent single layer theory - the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Thus, a brief theoretical description of the advanced meshless techniques extended to the analysis of composite plates, considering a weak-form approach combined with the FSDT, is presented. In the end, several composite laminates are analyzed and the results obtained with the distinct numerical approaches are compared and discussed. The results show that meshless methods are capable to efficiently analyze composite laminated plates submitted to static loads under linear elastic regimes. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Real-time video chroma keying: a parallel approach based on local texture and global colour distribution

This study presents an automatic, human perception based chroma-keying algorithm that extracts the objects of interest (i.e. foreground) from monochromatic background. Given an image to be chroma keyed, the global colour distribution and the local texture property are analysed in CIECAM02 colour appearance model. After the analysis, input image is automatically segmented into three parts: foreground, background, and uncertain regions. Afterwards, the background colour is propagated from known background to uncertain region by using interpolation functions;and the foreground colour is estimated based on global colour distribution and a linear cost criteria. The quantitative and perceptual comparisons on the matting results show that the proposed method can reliably remove the background region, correctly restore the intrinsic foreground colour, and accurately keep the fine details. In addition, the authors implement the proposed method on a heterogeneous parallel computing architecture which efficiently distributes the workload among different processors. The simulation results show that the foreground objects can be accurately extracted from high-definition and/or ultra-high-definition videos in real time.

Using a `local' integral representation of a matrix connection of order n corresponding to an interpolation function of the same order, for each integer n, we can describe an injective map from the class of matrix connections of order n to the class of positive n-monotone functions on (0, infinity) and the range of this corresponding covers the class of interpolation functions of order 2n. In particular, the space of symmetric connections is isomorphic to the space of symmetric positive n-monotone functions. Moreover, we show that, for each n, the class of n-connections extremely contains that of (n + 2)-connections.

Enhancing the Critical Characteristics of Natural Esters with Antioxidants for Power Transformer Applications

The energy demand of the whole world is dominated by petroleum products for centuries in the field of critical application like electricity. The application of mineral oil in power system equipment like transformer is potentially hazardous to environment. The exploitation of petroleum oil is running out of demand and in the near future, oil scarcity exists. This work focuses in identifying alternate dielectric for replacing traditional mineral oil. India is a tropical country, which produces vegetable oils like sunflower oil, palm oil, coconut oil, mustard oil, corn oil, soybean oil and rice bran oil profusely and it can be used as dielectric fluids in transformer. To be more proficient in the operation of transformer, these vegetable oils should be converted in to superior dielectric fluids. This work also embraces the individual and combinatorial effect of selected natural and synthetic antioxidants in natural ester. For investigation sunflower oil, rice bran oil, soybean oil and corn oil are chosen. The critical parameters like breakdown voltage, viscosity, flash point and fire point are calculated according to IEC and ASTM standards before and after addition of antioxidants with vegetable oils. Astoundingly it is found that the use of natural and synthetic antioxidants can enhance the critical parameters of natural ester for transformer application and the antioxidant activity in the natural ester is discussed. The interpolation functions are calculated based on the results obtained in minimum and maximum concentration of antioxidant added. These functions are used to predict the intermediate output variations caused for each antioxidant concentrations (in gram).

Uncertainties in realistic lumped and distributive circuit systems are of great importance to today's high yield manufacture demand. However, evaluating the stochastic effect in the time domain for the hybrid electromagnetics (EM)-circuit system was seldom done, especially when Monte Carlo is too expensive to be feasible. In this work, an adaptive hierarchical sparse grid collocation (ASGC) method is presented to quantify the impacts of stochastic inputs on hybrid electromagnetics (EM)-circuit or EM scattering systems. The ASGC method approximates the stochastic observables of interest using interpolation functions over series collocation points. Instead of employing a full-tensor product sense, the collocation points in ASGC method are hierarchically marched with interpolation depth based upon Smolyaks construction algorithm. To further reduce the collocation points, an adaptive scheme is employed by using hierarchical surplus of each collocation point as the error indicator. With the proposed method, the number of collocation points is significantly deduced. To verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed stochastic solver, hybrid EM-circuit systems are quantified by a full-wave EM-circuit simulator based upon discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method and modified nodal analysis (MNA). The time domain influences of uncertainty inputs such as geometrical information and electrical material properties are thereby benchmarked and demonstrated through this paper.

Set of functions for the calculation of bending displacements for spiral bevel gear teeth

Two kinds of methods are generally used to determine bending deflection of spiral bevel gear teeth: the first method is based on FEM (Finite Element Method) computations, which require relatively long calculation time, while the second one uses interpolation functions, having the advantage of being fast, but can be applied only for standard cases. The present paper describes a mixed model, using interpolation functions in order to be fast. These functions result from FEM computations to remain very general. The developed model is illustrated with numerical examples to compare with FEM computations. The comparison approves that the results are very accurate. The method can be used in order to solve the problem of spiral bevel gear load sharing in quasi-static state. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Feed forward neural network and interpolation function models to predict the soil and subsurface sediments distribution in Bam, Iran

An application of the artificial neural network (ANN) approach for predicting mean grain size using electric resistivity data from Bam city is presented. A feed forward back propagation network was developed employing 45 sets of input data. The input variables in the ANN model are the electrical resistivity, water table as a Boolean value and depth;the output is the mean grain size. To demonstrate the authenticity of this approach, the network predictions are compared with those from interpolation methods and the same data. This comparison shows that the ANN approach performs better results. The predicted and observed mean grain size values were compared and show high correlation coefficients. The ANN approach maps show a high degree of correlation with well data based grain size maps and can therefore be used conservatively to better understand the influence of input parameters on sedimentological predictions.

A novel algorithm for the synthesis of fiber gratings is presented. For the first time we propose an effective optimal approach to construct a coupling coefficient function by employing 4th-order Runge-Kutta(R-K) analysis method for calculating the reflection spectra of fiber gratings. The numerical results show that with this proposed method, some required optical filters have been yielded with better features compared with other methods such as Gel'Fand-Levitan-Marchenko(GLM) *** addition, the performance of different interpolation functions particularly utilized in our algorithm, including linear-type, spline-type, and Hermit-type, are discussed in detail.

A RELATION BETWEEN THE ZEROS OF TWO DIFFERENT L-functions WHICH HAVE AN EULER PRODUCT AND FUNCTIONAL EQUATION

As automorphic L-functions or Artin L-functions, several classes of L-functions have Euler products and functional equations. In this paper we study the zeros of L-functions which have Euler products and functional equations. We show that there exists a relation between the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function and the zeros of such L-functions. As a special case of our results, we find relations between the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function and the zeros of automorphic L-functions attached to elliptic modular forms or the zeros of Rankin-Selberg L-functions attached to two elliptic modular forms.
