A novel SSIM based RDO approach for intra-only coding in HEVC is presented. We incorporate SSIM into the distortion measure for variable size CTUs. High efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard is the latest video coding standard generation. It employs powerful coding tools to obtain improved compression efficiency. To better exploit the redundancies, HEVC adopts a very flexible quad-tree coding structure, allowing the encoder to use a block partition that matches the image features. This exhaustive technique may achieve a higher coding efficiency;however, it induces a significant computational complexity in the encoding engine. This paper proposes a new texture parameter for classifying digital videos as a first contribution and then introduces an efficient coding unit (CU) partitioning algorithm based on the early defined texture parameter in order to speed up the encoding process. In fact, the proposed technique is based on edge detection by performing SOBEL filtering in order to decide the appropriate CU size. Compared to the original HEVC, the average execution time-saving is about 31 % while maintaining almost the same output video quality.

Variable wireless channel is a big challenge for real-time video applications, and the rate adaptation of real-time video streaming becomes a hot topic. intra-video coding is important for high-quality video communi-cation and industrial video applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel adaptive scheme for real-time video transmission with intra-only coding over a wireless network. The key idea of this scheme is to estimate the instantaneous remaining capacity of the network to adjust the quality of the next several video frames, which not only can keep low queuing delay and ensure video quality, but also can respond to bandwidth changes quickly. We compare our scheme with three different schemes in the video transmission system. The experi-mental results show that our scheme has higher bandwidth utilization and faster bandwidth change response, while maintaining low queuing delay.

The flickering effect is a serious problem of intra-only coding and is caused by different accuracy loss of transform coefficients by the quantization process from frame to frame. Nevertheless, the study for its solution has never been sufficient. In this paper, we analyze why flickering effect happens and illustrate our results of observation using intra-only coding scheme of the H.264/AVC standard. Based on our analysis, we propose a flickering effect reduction scheme which is a pre-processing method using the Kalman filtering algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme increases subjective visual quality by removing flickering effect.
