The design of irregular subarrayed planar phased arrays composed of modular tiles is a research area of increasing interest. In this article, a heuristic iterative convex relaxation programming (H-ICRP) framework is proposed. By formulating the tiling of irregular subarray as a binary programming problem, this framework is suitable for arbitrary array aperture and subarray structure. To achieve exact aperture cover, the nonconvex binary constraint is relaxed to a convex approximation and solved through multiple iterations. Furthermore, for better performance of the scanning radiation pattern, the multitask Bayesian compressive sensing (MT-BCS) solver is adopted to find a heuristic initial iteration point instead of randomizing, such that the robustness and effectiveness can be improved remarkably. Good performance and potentialities of the proposed method are verified by comparing with existing approaches in various numerical examples.

To reduce the cost of an $n\times n$ polarimetric phased array antenna, an innovative subarray tiling technology is proposed based on a geometrical property called rotational symmetry. This property requires the tiling solution to remain unchanged after a series of rotations, and hence, a consistent scanning performance in multiple beam directions is guaranteed. By considering the rotation as the reordering of the array elements, an improved Algorithm X is proposed, which is computationally efficient to find the rotational symmetric exact tiling solutions (RSETS). Due to a compressed scale of the RSETS and a faster dimension reduction of the dictionary matrix, it is convenient to obtain an RSETS with the scanning performance approximated that of the optimal solution. A 12 x 12 X-band dual-polarized microstrip patch array antenna is simulated for the verification of the proposed method under mutual coupling effects. A desired scanning performance is accomplished on both copolarization and cross-polarization patterns of multiple beam directions, which is better than 99.75% of exact tiling solutions.

subarray technology is an effective tradeoff between the sensor array radiation performance and manufacturing cost control. This letter proposes an irregular subarray tiling strategy based on the weighted L1 norm iterative convex optimization (WL1X) method. We first establish a subarray partition model and solve the L0 norm constraint problem by weighted L1 norm iterative convex optimization and then the optimal solution is selected based on the radiation performance. Further, We adopt a good initial point for the local optimization to improve scheme acquisition and selection efficiency. The proposed method can quickly obtain a subarray partition structure with better performance. The effectiveness and potential of the proposed methods are verified by various numerical examples.

subarray technique is an effective approach for reducing the cost of a phased array system. Although integrating multiple elements into a subarray can reduce the number of radio frequency (RF) chains and system complexity, how to avoid grating lobes when performing beam-scanning remains a challenging research topic. This paper evaluates the scanning performance of three different types of polyomino-shaped irregular subarray configurations: domino-shaped, skew-tetromino-shaped & L-tetromino-shaped, and L-octomino-shaped subarray configurations, on both 8x8 and 16x16 arrays. By combining the Algorithm X technique to precisely tile polyomino-shaped subarrays and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) to find the optimal configuration, we are able to evaluate the maximum sidelobe levels (SLLs) at different scanning angles from numerical simulations.

Advanced Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm and Its Application to irregular subarray Phased Array Antenna Synthesis

In this paper, an advanced fruit fly algorithm (FOA) is proposed and applied in subarray phased array antenna synthesis. The proposed algorithm introduces orthogonal crossover, quantum selection and simulated annealing operations on the individuals, and then combines them by using an adaptive expansion-contraction factor. Accordingly, a linear generation mechanism of candidate solution based fruit fly algorithm (LGMS-FOA) is generated, in which individuals are selected in a highly balanced way, and the poor solutions are still accepted with a varying probability during the iteration. These mechanisms help the proposed algorithm enhance the population diversity and global searching capability but avoid falling into local optimum. Numerical classical unimodel benchmark functions are provided to test the proposed algorithm (OLFOA) in comparison with other advanced algorithms. In addition, to further validate its superiority, the proposed algorithm is applied to handle the subarray array synthesis of several tough planar and circular apertures with different array sizes and subarray shapes. Simulation results show that the proposed OLFOA can achieve better performance than other improved evolutionary algorithms.

Hybrid irregular Tiled Arrays for Wide-Angle and Low-Sidelobe Scanning With Mixed Integer Linear Programming

The segmentation of phased array apertures into distinct sets of tile modules, referred to as irregular tiled arrays, is highly appealing in scenarios requiring cost efficiency. However, the limited scanning abilities restrict broader applications. To mitigate this limitation, we propose a hybrid subarray architecture that enhances flexibility by utilizing the diverse scanning advantages offered by various subarray sizes and shapes. A mixed integer linear programming model is developed to optimize the tiling configuration to adapt the array design to meet different sidelobe level (SLL) and maximum scanning angle requirements. Benders decomposition is employed to efficiently decouple and solve both integer and continuous variables. The proposed array structure exhibits network complexity that falls between traditional irregular arrays and nonadjacent arrays. Compared to traditional arrays, it achieves more than 4 dB sidelobe suppression and a 1.1 dB gain improvement. Compared with nonadjacent arrays, the proposed array not only extends the scanning angle but also achieves significantly lower SLLs, offering superior performance for wide-angle scanning applications.

Wideband irregular subarrayed Array Design Strategy With Minimum Module Quantity

This article presents a wideband irregular subarrayed design strategy with minimum module quantity, which decomposes the practical application problem into two subproblems according to the application scenarios and requirements. For the arrays tiled with irregular subarrays, we propose a wideband array partition method based on the principle that pattern matching is equivalent to excitation matching. The optimal module partition scheme is obtained by the K-means clustering method. Then, we propose a minimum module quantity estimation method to explore the relationship between the bandwidth and the number of modules. For modular array cases, we propose a wideband array hierarchical design strategy with minimum module quantity. The module partition model of the array with tiled module structure is solved by the weighted l(1)-norm convex relaxation iterative optimization method. Both the design methods are able to obtain the optimal module partition scheme with the minimum quantity of modules and maintain good radiation performance. The effectiveness and potential of the proposed methods are verified by various numerical examples.

Wide-Angle Scanning Design of irregular Arrays Based on Unequal Phase Feeding

The widespread application of irregular arrays is prevented due to their low gain and high sidelobe at large scanning angles. This article proposes a wide-angle scanning approach based on unequal phase feeding for irregular arrays. Through different phase feeding for elements in a subarray, the radiation vector is deflected, reducing the relative wavelength path distance. The proposed array realizes improved directivity and low sidelobes at large scanning angles, at the cost of a small reduction of directivity in the broadside. The method of symmetrical phase exchange achieves wideband capability, even though the unequal phase delay is frequency-dependent. A mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed for the design of irregular subarray partitioning and phase distribution. Simulation results show that the scanning range can be further extended from +/- 35 degrees to +/- 65 degrees compared with the state-of-the-art method. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, a prototype including an antenna array and divider networks is fabricated and measured. Measured results show that the realized gain (RG) of the proposed array exceeds that of the state-of-the-art array by about 4.0 dB at large scanning angles, at the cost of a 1.9 dB reduction in broadside gain at the highest frequency.

Hierarchical Array Design Strategy Composed of irregular and Overlapped subarrays in Large-Scale Planar Array

Effective cost reduction is the primary task of the commercialization of phased array antenna technology. In this communication, a novel array structure composed of irregular and overlapped subarrays is proposed. The advantages of two kinds of subarrays are integrated to achieve the performance requirements while reducing the cost. The basic idea is departing the array into a multilayer hierarchical structure. The first layer is subtly designed by irregular subarray tiles. In this case, the number of active devices can be effectively reduced, thereby reducing the cost. The second layer is an overlapped subarray structure which is able to ensure scanning performance. Both limited field of view and wideband wide-angle scanning applications are discussed to show the compatibility of the proposed structure. The effectiveness is verified by various numerical results.

Low-Cost subarrayed Sensor Array Design Strategy for IoT and Future 6G Applications

The low-cost sensor array, an effective way to provide sufficient degrees of freedom (DoFs) and affordable costs, is one of the most important foundation devices for large-scale applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) and sixth-generation (6G) spaceborne communication systems. In this article, we propose an irregular subarray-based low-cost sensor array design strategy, which decomposes the practical application problem into two subproblems according to the scene scale. For the small-size cases, a user-defined DoF control strategy is presented, which is flexibly defined and establishes an effective tradeoff between the sensor array radiation performance and manufacturing cost. Moreover, for large-size cases, a hierarchical subarray design strategy is presented. A module panel structure composed of subarray tiles is proposed to avoid both the convergence problem in high-dimensional optimization and engineering complexity. Both design strategies are able to ensure good sensor radiation performance while maintaining engineering convenience. The effectiveness and potential of the proposed method are verified by various numerical examples.
