A new method for the acceleration of explicit iterative algorithms for the numerical solution of systems of partial differential equations has been developed. The method is based on the idea of allowing each partial differential equation in the system to approach the converged solution at its own optimal speed and at the same time to communicate with the rest of the equations in the system.

An iterative algorithm incorporating aperture-domain management and an appropriate measurement strategy are employed to recover the aperture phase of a reflector antenna from a single scan of the radiated field amplitude and a simulated approximation of the aperture amplitude. Simulated and experimental results are presented which validate this reflector antenna metrology technique at millimetre wavelengths. Accelerated convergence is obtained and a new sensitive error metric is introduced to assess convergence to the solution. Measurement conditions are identified for modest signal-to-noise requirements and the prevention of algorithm stagnation.

2ND-ORDER algorithm FOR OPTIMAL-MODEL ORDER REDUCTION

A second-order algorithm is given for optimal model order reduction of continuous single-input/single-output systems. Given a transfer function of order n, it finds the transfer function of a model of order m < n that minimizes the integral-square difference between the impulse responses of the two systems. It is shown that this is exactly equivalent to two other problems: 1) minimizing the integral-square difference between the frequency responses of the two systems and 2) minimizing the mean-square difference between the statistical steady-state responses of the two systems to a white-noise input. The algorithm is based on the known explicit solution of the governing Lyapunov equation, which yields analytical expressions for the first and second derivatives of the performance index with respect to the residues and poles of the reduced-order model. These derivatives are then used in a Newton-Raphson algorithm. The algorithm is applied to find exact solutions for four examples, one of which has an unstable mode. The examples corroborate previous research indicating that Moore's truncated balanced realization is not always close to the optimal reduced order model. Matching step response instead of impulse response requires only a slight change in the algorithm. © 1990 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc., All rights reserved.

DESIGN SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF BOUNDARY-ELEMENT SUBSTRUCTURES

A design sensitivity analysis (DSA) formulation using substructuring is presented for the boundary-element method (BEM). A reduced set of DSA equations is obtained from the implicit differentiation of reduced BEM equations. Relationships for the expansion of the reduced DSA expressions to determine the sensitivities of all condensed quantities that are present in the analysis are also given. These reduced and expansion sensitivity equations involve the sensitivity of the inverse of a system submatrix. A procedure is developed to obviate the need for the determination of this submatrix inverse sensitivity. The present formulation allows for arbitrary condensing and noncondensing of zones in multiple zone models, and such zones can simultaneously exist in the reduced set of analysis equations. A set of numerical examples for two-dimensional plane and axisymmetric continua are presented. Since the condensation formulation developed is exact, the accuracies of these examples are the same as those for the uncondensed model. It is shown, however, from the CPU timings presented for these examples, that the substructuring technique can dramatically economize the numerical shape optimization of models with partially sensitive geometries. © 1990 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc., All rights reserved.

SENSITIVITY CONTROLLER FOR UNCERTAIN SYSTEMS

In this paper a new controller design, which we Shall call the "trajectory sensitivity optimization" method, is presented to improve the robustness for parameter variations. The method uses the sensitivity trajectory to model the parameter uncertainty and introduces a special quadratic cost function involving an input and output sensitivity term. Necessary conditions are derived to obtain the dynamic controller. The necessary conditions consist of two Lyapunov equations and two controller gain equations that have no closed-form solution. Therefore, a special iterative algorithm was developed to obtain the numerical solution. The method can deal with a wider class of parameter uncertainty than existing methods. Numerical examples show that the method is effective in improving the robustness to parameter variations. © 1990 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc., All rights reserved.

REANALYSIS FOR STRUCTURAL MODIFICATIONS IN BOUNDARY-ELEMENT RESPONSE AND DESIGN SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS

A reanalysis technique is presented for obtaining changes in response variables due to changes in design parameters with the boundary-element method. The approach is considered for static response analysis and design sensitivity analysis. Two iterative schemes, one based on total quantities and another based on incremental quantities, are developed. These schemes avoid the computationally expensive step of factorization of the coefficient matrix for the modified structure. Numerical results are obtained for analyses using 1) single-zone discretization, 2) multizone discretization, and 3) multizone discretization with condensation. The convergence trends for both iterative algorithms are presented for the response analysis and the design sensitivity analysis. A substantial economy in computer time is obtained using the present developments and is demonstrated here through CPU timings. © 1990 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc., All rights reserved.
