The use of species data versus environmental surrogates used in lieu of species data in systematic reserve site selection is still highly debated. We analyse in a case study whether and how the results of reserve network selection are affected by the use of species data versus habitat surrogates (habitat models) for qualitative (presence/absence) and quantitative (population size/habitat quality) information. In a model region, the post-mining landscape south of Leipzig/Germany, we used iterative algorithms to select a network for 29 animal target species from a basic set of 127 sites. The network results differ markedly for the two information types: depending on the representation goal, 18-45% of the selected sites chosen in response to one information type do not appear in the results for the other type. Given the availability of quantitative and hence deeper information, evaluation rules can be used to filter out the best habitats and the largest populations. In our model study, 0-40% less suitable areas were selected when instead of quantitative details only qualitative data were used. In view of various advantages and limitations of the two information types, we propose improving the methodological approach to the selection of networks for animal species by combining different information types.

Advances in semiconductor technology, has enabled designers to put complex, massively parallel multiprocessor systems on a single chip. Network on Chip (NoC) that supports high degree of reusability and scalablity, is a new paradigm for designing;curs based System-on-Chip. NoCs provide efficient communication services to IPs: communication services with guarantees on throughput and latency (GS) and communication services with no guarantees on them (BE). However, the run-time management of communication in NoC, especially congestion control mechanises is a challenging task. This paper considers a congestion control scenario which models flow control as a utility-based optimization problem Since BE traffic is prone to congestion, we assume that GS traffic requirements are being preserved at the desired level and regulate BE source rates with the solution of the optimization problem We propose an iterative algorithm to solve the optimization problem based on Newton's method. The proposed algorithm can be implemented by a centralized controller with low computation and communication overhead.

A common frustration in signal processing and, more generally, information recovery is the presence of irregularities in the data. At best, the standard software or methods will no longer be directly applicable when data are missing, incomplete or irregularly spaced (e.g., as with wavelets). Self-consistency is a very general and powerful statistical principle for dealing with such problems. Conceptually it is extremely appealing, for it is essentially a mathematical formalization of iterating common-sense "trial-and-error" methods until no more improvement is possible. Mathematically it is elegant, with one fixed-point equation to solve and a general projection theorem to establish optimality. Practically it is straightforward to program because it directly uses the regular/complete-data method for iteration. Its major disadvantage is that it can be computationally intensive. However, increasingly efficient (approximate) implementations are being discovered, such as for wavelet de-noising with hard and soft thresholding. This brief overview summarizes the author's keynote presentation on those points, based on joint work with Thomas Lee on wavelet applications and with Zhan Li on the theoretical properties of the self-consistent estimators.

In this paper, a general framework for the inversion of a linear operator in the case where one seeks several components from several observations is presented. The estimation is done by minimizing a functional balancing discrepancy terms by regularization terms. The regularization terms are adapted norms that enforce the desired properties of each component. The main focus of this paper is the definition of the discrepancy terms. Classically, these are quadratic. We present novel discrepancy terms adapt to the observations. They rely on adaptive projections that emphasize important information in the observations. iterative algorithms to minimize the functionals with adaptive discrepancy terms are derived and their convergence and stability is studied. The methods obtained are compared for the problem of reconstruction of astrophysical maps from multifrequency observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background. We show the added flexibility provided by the adaptive discrepancy terms.

Level Crossing (LC) Analog-to-Digital converters have been suggested as an asynchronous alternative to conventional schemes. It is our intention to improve the performance of these LC converters. In this paper, we also suggest alternative adaptive and multi-level adaptive LC schemes and use an iterative method to drastically improve the performance of LC converters. The impressive improvement of these schemes make LC converters a potential competitor to other conventional AID converters such as Sigma Delta Modulators (SDM).

Super-resolution technology is used to reconstruct a single high resolution image from a Sequence of low resolution images to try to restore the information outside of the cutoff frequency, so observer can obtain more details and useful information from the acquired images. This paper proposes a new method based on projection onto convex sets, adaptive to subpixel motion estimation, to create a high resolution image from a sequence of lower-resolution motion images. The experiment shows that edge details of the reconstructed image remain very well and more useful information can be obtained form the reconstructed image. But parasitic bellows and noise are still exists and slightly enlarged in somewhere. Generally speaking, the method is robust and effective.

This paper treats the output feedback H-2 control with H-infinity norm constraint (mixed H-2/H-infinity control problem). In general, this problem is a BMI problem which is difficult to be solved theoretically. The purpose of this paper is to propose an iterative method for obtaining a sub-optimal solution of the mixed H-2/H (infinity) control problem. The key idea of this paper is to employ a full-order observer-based controller. The proposed method produces a sequence of controllers which approaches to the unconstrained globally optimal H-2 controller while it satisfies the H-infinity norm constraint. A numerical example shows the effectiveness of our method.
