Due to the sheer volume of data involved, video coding is an important application of lossy source coding, and has received wide industrial interest and support as evidenced by the development and success of a series of video coding standards. All MPEG-series and H-series video coding standards proposed so far are based upon a video coding paradigm called predictive video coding, where video source frames X?,i=1,2,...,N, are encoded in a frame by frame manner, the encoder and decoder for each frame X?, i =1, 2, ..., N, enlist help only from all previous encoded frames Sj, j=1, 2, ..., *** this thesis, we will look further beyond all existing and proposed video coding standards, and introduce a new coding paradigm called causal video coding, in which the encoder for each frame X? can use all previous original frames Xj, j=1, 2, ..., i-1, and all previousencoded frames Sj, while the corresponding decoder can use only allprevious encoded frames. We consider all studies, comparisons, and designs on causal video codingfrom an information theoreticpoint of view. In practice, we meet numerous image restoration problems, particularly those on face images. An approach to image restoration based on statistical prior of faces and image blur measure is presented in this paper. The novelty of the approach is twofold: 1) the prior on the shape and appearance of a face represented as statistical models is incorporated into the regularized image restoration formulation. Moreover, an iterative algorithm is given to provide a numerical solution. 2) an image blur measure is defined to describe the blur nature of an image. The measure is evaluated at each step of the iteration process to determine the weight of the constraint introduced by the statistical prior. Both subjective and objective comparisons of the restoration results indicate great improvements on image preservation and noise suppression.

This paper presents a traffic model for an ATM multiplexer providing video, voice, image, and data services. The traffic model classifies the input traffic into two types: real-time and non-real-time. The input process for real-time traffic is a Markov modulated Bernoulli process (MMBP), while that for non-real-time traffic is a Bernoulli process with batches. The z-transform of the cell interarrival time A/sub MMBP/(z) is obtained. The average traffic load /spl rho//sub MMBP/ and the squared coefficient of variation of the time between success cell C/sup 2//sub MMBP/ are then obtained from the respective derivatives of A/sub MMBP/(z). The autocorrelation coefficient of the cell interarrival time with lag 1 /spl psi/, can be also obtained. This paper presents an iterative algorithm that can be used to calculate the MMBP probability distribution of the cell interarrival time. So far few results about discrete-time finite buffer queues with correlated inputs are known. This paper analyzes the performance of an ATM multiplexer considering the correlation and burst in cell arrivals. For the MMBP-stream, the waiting time distribution and the cell loss probability for MMBP+M/sup [X]//D/1/K finite buffer system are all exactly calculated with the use of a recursive algorithm. Calculations show the influence of burstiness and correlation on both the loss probability and waiting time. The accuracy of the analytical results has been largely validated by means of a simulation approach.

In this age of explosive growth in information exchanges, there is indeed no time at which security does not matter. One of the symmetric encryption algorithms, DES, has kept its dominant position in the area of data encryption over the last few decades. However, with a rapid development in the field of computer hardware, DES has already been proved insecure. It takes a short time to translate the ciphertext to its corresponding plaintext using brute-force method at a reasonable cost. This is mainly due to the small key size DES employed. Given these issues, the objective of this article is to suggest an alternative on DES to obtain higher security and better execution efficiency by increasing the key size and updating the iteration technique. Comparisons were conducted with both DES and the advanced DES named triple DES (3DES). The results have demonstrated that the proposed algorithm outperforms both previous algorithms.

We present novel transfer operator-based methods for domain of attraction computation and experimental data analysis of nonlinear systems. The problem of domain of attraction (DA) computation is of great practical interest with applications in various engineering and physical systems such as power system, chemical processes, aircraft control, and biological systems. We propose linear transfer operator-based set-oriented numerical method for DA computation of nonlinear systems. The proposed method overcomes some of the shortcoming of the existing methods of DA computation; in particular the proposed method can be used for DA computation of non-polynomial vector fields and for systems with non-equilibrium dynamics. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is one of the most popular methods currently used for experimental data analysis and reduced order modeling of fluid flow systems. The basic idea behind POD is to decompose the experimental data into dominant energy modes. We present an alternate numerical scheme for spectral-based decomposition of the experimental time series data. The new method is based on the spectral analysis of linear transfer operator constructed from the experimental data. Application of this method is demonstrated on a time series data obtained from the flapping wing micro-aerial vehicle experiment. Future research efforts will focus on application of this method for reduced order modeling of time series data.

Composite quantile regression has been shown to be a more competitive method than the well-known mean regression and quantile regression approaches, since it can significantly improve the estimation efficiency for a wide class of errors. In this paper, we propose a profiling composite quantile regression for robust estimation of semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear model (VCPLM) by combining the ideas of local linear composite quantile regression with the profile technique. Different from the step-wise estimation method considered in Kai et al. (2011), an iterative algorithm is developed for the estimates of parametric and nonparametric functions. Under some mild regularity conditions, we establish the asymptotic normalities of the obtained estimators and further briefly discuss the related asymptotic relative efficiency. Noteworthy, an entirely different way from Kai et al. (2011) is presented to establish the asymptotic normality of the parametric component, which is frequently of the primary interest in VCPLM. Some Monte Carlo simulations with various errors and an environmental data application are conducted to evaluate the finite sample performance of the proposed methodology.
