Non-Gradient-Based algorithm for Structural Reliability Analysis

In reliability analysis, the first-order reliability method (FORM) and various optimization algorithms are widely used to locate the most probable point (MPP) and calculate the reliability index. These algorithms generally require first-order response sensitivities or gradients of the limit-state function. However, in engineering, the reliability analysis is often merged with finite-element (FE) analysis or other structural/mechanical analyses, and the limit-state function is implicit. The sensitivity analysis may be computationally intensive or cumbersome, and several techniques were developed to deal with this problem. In the present paper, a general iterative algorithm that does not need gradients is proposed. This algorithm produces n series of sequence points iteratively in the n-dimension standard normal space. It is proven that the n series of points will converge to the same point, which is just the MPP, and its distance to the origin is the reliability index. The proposed algorithm also introduces new step lengths to control the convergence of the sequence. These step lengths are new because they may be constant during the iteration or varied using the interim evaluations of the reliability index, which means a self-adjust process in essence. Eighteen examples are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. It is indicated that the proposed algorithm is effective and robust.

Phase extraction from random phase-shifted shadow moire fringe patterns using stereovision technique

The measurement accuracy of phase shifting shadow moire is affected by both the spatially nonuniform phase shift error and random phase shift error. Substantial work has been done to overcome this difficulty, but few works can deal with the two error sources simultaneously. In the presented paper, we describe a solution that can compensate for the two error sources at the same time. In our method, a binocular stereovision system is integrated into a shadow moire configuration to calibrate the setting parameters. Thus, a precise measurement setup is built. Then, we developed an iterative least-squares algorithm to analyze the acquired three fringe patterns. The proposed algorithm can extract the measurement phase without nonuniform phase shift error. On the other hand, it can compensate the random phase shift error by calibrating the distance of grating translation using the least-squares fitting in spatial. Optical experiments show that the proposed method can effectively minimize the phase-shift error and that it possesses a superior performance than the existing typical phase shifting algorithm. A framework to extend Luenberger observer to nonlinear systems is proposed. The theory of invariant manifolds plays a central role in the framework. It is shown that the invariant manifolds for observer design are often non-standard ones and this makes their computations challenging. The proposed theory successfully removes the condition imposed on the system to be observed in the previous research in nonlinear Luenberger observer. Numerical examples show that the design methods proposed produce more effective observers compared with linear observers.

A New Approach to H ∞ Model Reduction for Positive Systems

In this paper, we investigate model reduction for positive linear time-invariant systems in the H ∞ sense. First, the bounded real lemma is further developed to obtain a new characterization of the H ∞ performance, which does not include any product term between the Lyapunov matrix and the parameter of the reduced-order model. Then a new parameterization of a positive reduced-order model is proposed, and accordingly, an iterative algorithm is constructed, which makes use of the coarse reduced-order models resulting from the (generalized) balanced truncation as the initial value to search for a desired positive one. Both continuous- and discrete-time systems are considered in the same framework. Numerical examples clearly show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method.

In this paper, we show the extended general variational inequality problems are equivalent to solving the general Wiener–Hopf equations. By using the equivalence, we establish a general iterative algorithm for finding the solution of extended general variational inequalities. We also discuss the convergence criteria for the algorithm. Our results extend and improve the corresponding results announced by many others.

The emerging radio signal enabled simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), has drawn significant attention. To achieve secrecy transmission by cooperative jamming, especially in the upcoming 5G networks with self-sustainable mobile base stations (BSs) and yet not to add extra power consumption, we propose in this paper a new relay protocol, i.e., harvest-and-jam (HJ), in a relay wiretap channel with an additional set of spare helpers. Specifically, in the first transmission phase, a single-antenna transmitter (Tx) transfers signals carrying both information and energy to a multi-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay and a group of multi-antenna helpers;in the second transmission phase, the AF relay processes the information and forwards it to the receiver while each of the helpers generates an artificial noise (AN), the power of which is constrained by its previously harvested energy, to interfere with the eavesdropper. By optimizing the transmit beamforming matrix for the AF relay and the covariance matrix for the AN, we maximize the secrecy rate for the receiver subject to transmit power constraints for the AF relay and all helpers. The formulated problem is shown to be non-convex, for which we propose an iterative algorithm based on alternating optimization. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulations as compared to other heuristic schemes.

In this paper, we consider the control of large-scale processes with both input and state couplings. A distributed model predictive control(MPC) strategy for tracking based on the reference trajectories is presented. The proposed distributed MPC strategy requires decomposing a large-scale system into several smaller ones and solving convex optimization problems independently. Distributed MPC tracking strategies for unconstrained and constrained processes are presented, respectively. An iterative algorithm is presented to coordinate the distributed MPC controllers. The proposed algorithm is applied to a four-tank process to demonstrate the effectiveness.

This paper proposes an uplink power control strategy with a low-complexity receiver for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission in the correlated Rayleigh block-fading channel. To avoid the large dimensional matrix inversion required by a minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) receiver in massive MIMO systems, we adopt the receiver based on truncated polynomial expansion (TPE) to reduce the complexity. We apply the uplink power control with the TPE receiver for the purpose of saving power consumption of all users. Due to the deterministic equivalent for the post-processing Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR), we propose an iterative algorithm to jointly optimize the polynomial coefficients of the TPE receiver and the total transmit power of all users based on the long-term channel state information (CSI) without the exchange of the excessive amount of instantaneous CSI. We prove that the proposed algorithm is converged. Numerical results show that the transmit power consumed by the system using the uplink power control strategy with the TPE receiver is close to that with the MMSE receiver when the polynomial degree is properly high.
