We present a new algorithm for joint detection and decoding of iteratively decodable codes transmitted over channels affected by a time-varying phase noise (PN) and a constant frequency offset. The proposed algorithm is obtained as an application of the sum-product algorithm to the factor graph representing the joint a posteriori distribution of the information symbols and the channel parameters given the channel output. The resulting algorithm employs the soft-output information on the coded symbols provided by the decoder and performs forward-backward recursions, taking into account the joint probability distribution of phase and frequency offset. We present simulation results for high-order coded modulation schemes based on low-density parity-check codes and serially concatenated convolutional codes, showing that, despite its low complexity, the algorithm is able to cope with a strong PN and a significant uncompensated frequency offset, thus avoiding the use of complicated data-aided frequency-estimation schemes operating on a known preamble. The robustness of the algorithm in the presence of a time-varying frequency offset is also discussed.

In this paper, the design of iterative detection and decoding (IDD) schemes relying on a low-complexity probabilistic data association (PDA) aided method is conceived for turbo-coded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems communicating over Nakagami-m fading channels. The known PDA based MIMO detectors typically operate purely in the probability-domain. We show that the classic relationship where the extrinsic LLRs are given by subtracting the a priori LLRs from the a posteriori LLRs does not hold for the existing PDA based MIMO detectors. Therefore, the PDA method is not readily applicable to the IDD receiver. To overcome this predicament, we propose an approximate Bayesian theorem based log-domain PDA (AB-Log-PDA) detector, as well as a novel simple approach of calculating the bit-wise extrinsic LLRs for the AB-Log-PDA, which makes the AB-Log-PDA well-suited for employment in IDD receivers. It is shown that the proposed AB-Log-PDA based IDD scheme is capable of achieving a comparable performance to that of the optimal maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector based IDD receiver, while imposing a much lower computational complexity in the scenarios considered.

This paper considers a Q-ary orthogonal direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) system with high-rate space-time linear dispersion codes (LDCs) in time-varying Rayleigh fading multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channels. We propose a joint multiuser detection, LDC decoding, Q-ary demodulation, and channel-decoding algorithm and apply the turbo processing principle to improve system performance in an iterative fashion. The proposed iterative scheme demonstrates faster convergence and superior performance compared with the V-BLAST-based DS-CDMA system and is shown to approach the single-user performance bound. We also show that the CDMA system is able to exploit the time diversity offered by the LDCS in rapid-fading channels.

This paper presents a low-complexity multiuser decoding technique that can be implemented in real time for a convolutionally coded direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system. The main contribution, denoted here as the iterative prior update (IPU), consists of iterative interference cancellation and prior updates on sequences of coded bits combined with M-algorithm and list decoding. We illustrate performance gains over other low-complexity sequence detection and decoding, stratigies and argue that the algorithm converges within a few iterations and requires only a small size buffer for keeping track of the priors along iterations. The fact that the we can use existing available architectures for Viterbi decoding with slight modifications and can meet the real-time processing constraints makes the IPU algorithm an attractive alternative for cellular systems.

From Nominal to True A Posteriori Probabilities: An Exact Bayesian Theorem Based Probabilistic Data Association Approach for iterative MIMO detection and decoding

It was conventionally regarded that the approximate Bayesian theorem based existing probabilistic data association (PDA) algorithms output the estimated symbol-wise a posteriori probabilities (APPs) as soft information. In our recent work, however, we demonstrated that these probabilities are not the true APPs in the rigorous mathematical sense, but a type of nominal APPs, which are unsuitable for the classic architecture of iterative detection and decoding (IDD) aided receivers. To circumvent this predicament, in this paper we propose an exact Bayesian theorem based logarithmic domain PDA (EB-Log-PDA) method, whose output has similar characteristics to the true APPs, and hence it is readily applicable to the classic IDD architecture of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems using the general M-ary modulation. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of the EB-Log-PDA algorithm's inner iteration on the design of EB-Log-PDA aided IDD receiver. We demonstrate that introducing inner iterations into EB-Log-PDA, which is common practice in conventional-PDA aided uncoded MIMO systems, would actually degrade the IDD receiver's performance, despite significantly increasing the overall computational complexity of the IDD receiver. Finally, we investigate the relationship between the extrinsic log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) of the proposed EB-Log-PDA and of the approximate Bayesian theorem based logarithmic domain PDA (AB-Log-PDA) reported in our previous work. Despite their difference in extrinsic LLRs, we also show that the IDD schemes employing the EB-Log-PDA and the AB-Log-PDA without incorporating any inner PDA iterations have a similar achievable performance close to that of the optimal maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector based IDD receiver, while imposing a significantly lower computational complexity in the scenarios considered.

The main challenge of massive machine-type communications (mMTC) is the joint activity and signal detection of devices. The mMTC scenario with many devices transmitting data intermittently at low data rates and via very short packets enables its modelling as a sparse signal processing problem. In this work, we consider a grant-free system and propose a detection and decoding scheme that jointly detects activity and signals of devices. The proposed scheme consists of a list detection technique, an l(0)-norm regularized activity-aware recursive least-squares algorithm, and an iterative detection and decoding (IDD) approach that exploits the device activity probability. In particular, the proposed list detection technique uses two candidate-list schemes to enhance the detection performance. We also incorporate the proposed list detection technique into an IDD scheme based on low-density parity-check codes. We derive uplink sum-rate expressions that take into account metadata collisions, interference and a variable activity probability for each user. A computational complexity analysis shows that the proposed list detector does not require a significant additional complexity over existing detectors, whereas a diversity analysis discusses its diversity order. Simulations show that the proposed scheme obtains a performance superior to existing suboptimal detectors and close to the oracle LMMSE detector.

Recently, a variety of reduced complexity soft-in soft-output detection algorithms have been introduced for iterative detection and decoding (IDD) systems. However, it is still challenging to implement soft-in soft-output detectors for MIMO systems due to heavy burden in computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a soft detection algorithm for MIMO systems which performs close to the full dimensional joint detection, yet offers significant complexity reduction over the existing detectors. The proposed algorithm, referred to as soft-input soft-output successive group (SSG) detector, detects a subset of symbols (called a symbol group) successively using a deliberately designed preprocessing to suppress the inter-group interference. In fact, the proposed preprocessor mitigates the effect of the interfering symbol groups successively using a priori information of the undetected groups and a posteriori information of the detected groups. Simulation results on realistic MIMO systems demonstrate that the proposed SSG detector achieves considerable complexity reduction over the conventional approaches with negligible performance loss.

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) scheme is getting increasingly popular and sophisticated in today's wireless communication systems, since it can highly improve the spectral efficiency, data rates, and error performance. In this paper, a novel iterative detection and decoding (IDD) method for LDPC-coded massive MIMO systems is proposed. Based on successive over relaxation (SOR) MIMO detection, LDPC decoding process is carried out after every detection iteration when applying IDD method. In other words, SOR detection iteration and LDPC decoding iteration are executed serially in every IDD iteration. With this method, the error performance is highly improved. When BER = 4x10(-4), the proposed IDD method can achieve more than 5 dB gain compared with non-IDD method. Details of simulation, computational complexity, and hardware implementation are also shown in this paper.

In this paper, we propose a new candidates list re-calculating to improve performance of iterative nonlinear detection and decoding in Multi-User (MU) Massive Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) system. The proposed nonlinear iterative detector includes a new algorithm of users (UEs) sorting before QR decomposition (QRD) and a new sorting-reduced (SR) K-best method. If MIMO detector is based on a candidates list updates, the performance can be improved by the candidates list re-calculating or using a priori information in the list generation. This is natural, because the quality of the candidates list is likely to be improved by using the decoder output as a priori information. We analyze the convergence of combining the detection algorithms with the soft low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder. Simulation results are presented in 5G QuaDRiGa channel with QAM64 modulation in 48 x 64 MIMO system and compared with other state-of-art approaches.
