In this paper, firstly, a decoupled sliding mode controller (DSMC) is designed for stabilization of an inverted pendulum system. Secondly, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm is implemented to optimize the DSMC parameters in order to decrease the normalized angle error of the pole and normalized distance error of the cart, simultaneously. The proposed Pareto front for the DSMC problem is validated through comparisons with existing state-of-the-art multi-objective algorithms. Then, java programming with applets is presented in order to simulate the stability and educate the internet-based control. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An automated learning system for java programming

The increase in the numbers enrolling in university computer courses makes huge demands on resources, and maintaining standards of teaching and tutorial support is almost impossible without a massive increase in staff. To overcome this situation, the authors have developed RoboProf, an automated learning environment which, as well as generating and assessing programming exercises, provides ongoing assistance and feedback to students without extra demands on lecturer and tutors' time. This system also contains a technique for detecting plagiarism, an increasing problem in computing courses worldwide. For this research, RoboProf was used to teach java programming to a class containing nearly 300 students in the first year of a computing degree. Use of the system by students was monitored and recorded on log files in order to investigate the extent to which usage patterns influence achieved programming skill. An analysis shows that students who complete the set of RoboProf exercises perform significantly better than those who do not. The timeliness in which these exercises are completed relative to other students is significant: early solvers get higher marks, and students solving the problems with fewer attempts get higher marks. Not surprisingly, plagiarists achieve a lower score than those who do their own work. Other factors that were found to influence programming performance included entry standards and gender. Entry qualifications impacted positively on performance, and males performed significantly better than females. There was a significant positive correlation between the score achieved in the RoboProf course and the performance in a subsequent computing course administered in the traditional manner.

A proposal of recommendation function for element fill-in-Blank problems in java programming learning assistant system

Purpose To advance java programming educations, the authors have developed a Web-based java programming learning assistant system (JPLAS). It offers the element fill-in-blank problem (EFP) for novice students to study java grammar and basic programming skills by filling in the missing elements in a source code. An EFP instance can be generated by selecting an appropriate code, and applying the blank element selection algorithm. As it is expected to cover broad grammar topics, a number of EFP instances have been generated. This paper aims to propose a recommendation function to guide a student solving the proper EFP instances among them. Design/methodology/approach This function considers the difficulty level of the EFP instance and the grammar topics that have been correctly answered by the student, and is implemented at the offline answering function of JPLAS using javaScript so that students can use it even without the Internet connections. Findings To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposal, 85 EFP instances are prepared to cover various grammar topics, and are assigned to a total of 92 students in two universities in Myanmar and Indonesia to solve them using the recommendation function. Their solution results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposal. Originality/value The concept of the difficulty level for an EFP instance is newly defined for the proper recommendation, and the accuracy in terms of the average numbers of answer submission times among the students is verified.

Graduate engineering students with lifelong learning skill can be achieved using flipped classroom strategy. Flipped classroom is one of the active learning strategy in which class time is used for problem-solving, application building, activities and to give more attain to individual student understanding whereas out-of-class time used for content delivery through video lecture. This paper presents an experiment conducted using flipped classroom strategy to teach java programming course to sixty students of Third year Information Technology. The objective of this work is to study how effectively we can use flipped classroom strategy to teach java programming concepts. In this paper, information about experimental methodology, students' experience about the flipped classroom activities and effectiveness of these activities in terms of result are presented.

A rapidly changing information technology industry and the economy are challenging educators to select and competently use the most appropriate learning resources. Many research studies report on the way we learn best, but most professional educators are generally uninformed concerning both the results of such studies and the value of heads-on and hands-on learning. Wasted resources, learner apathy, and discouragement are often experienced when suitable, interactive teaching methods are not appropriately applied. The challenge is to retain the student's attention, while communicating subject related information. In recent years, board games have been used to a limited extend in corporate settings, but most educators are not aware of the value and the effect of board games designed for learning. Interactive and engaging learning methods like board games provide immediate feedback through discussion with other players with emphasis on hands-on and heads-on activities. The aim of this study is to investigate board games as a method to improve students' knowledge about the java programming language as seen from the lecturer's viewpoint. This study claims that board games can be used as inexpensive, interactive engagement learning methods to stimulate hands-on and heads-on activities. The results of this study are very important especially for developing countries that cannot afford expensive materials to make students mentally and physically active.

In view of the increasing conflict between the current education status of the course "java programming" and social need of modern talents, this paper explores a novel teaching pattern of it. Open teaching, as a breakthrough of curriculum reform, is utilized to reverse the situation of passive knowledge acceptance in traditional studying way. It helps to stimulate students to search for and experience knowledge initiatively, to encourage them to think divergently and use creatively what they have learned to tackle practical problems. Therefore, utility of open teaching in the curriculum reform is of great significance for higher education to cultivate creative talents of software development in line with social needs.
