Comment on "The properties of free polymer surfaces and their influence on the glass transition temperature of thin polystyrene films" by J.S. Sharp, J.H. Teichroeb and J.A. Forrest

Sharp, Teichroeb and Forrest [J.S. Sharp, J.H. Teichroeb, J.A. Forrest, Eur. Phys. J. E 15, 473 (2004)] recently published a viscoelastic contact mechanics analysis of the embedment of gold nanospheres into a polystyrene (PS) surface. In the present comment, we investigate the viscoelastic response of the surface and conclude that the embedment experiments do not support the hypothesis of a liquid surface layer of sufficiently reduced "rheological temperature" to explain reports of very large reductions in the glass temperature of freely standing ultrathin polystyrene films. We also report some errors and discrepancies in the paper under comment that resulted in an inability to reproduce the reported calculations. We present our findings of error in a spirit of clarifying the problem of embedment of spheres into surfaces and in order that others can understand why they may not reproduce the results reported by Sharp, Teichroeb and Forrest. In the comment, we also examine the effects of the magnitude of the forces that result from the polymer surface-nanosphere particle interactions on the viscoelastic properties deduced from the embedment data and we provide a comparison of apparent surface or "rheological" temperature vs. experimental temperature that indicates further work needs to be performed to fully understand the surface embedment experiments. Finally, we comment that the nanosphere embedment measurements have potential as a powerful tool to determine surface viscoelastic properties.

Distributed Computing on an Ensemble of Browsers

Given the ubiquity of Web browsers and the performance gains being achieved by javascript virtual machines, a question arises: Could Internet browsers become yet another middleware for distributed computing? With 2 billion users online, computing through Internet browsers could amass immense resources and transform the Internet into a distributed computer ideal for common classes of distributed scientific applications such as parametric studies. The proposed WeevilScout prototype framework builds on this idea, and offers results from a proof-of-concept cluster of globally distributed Internet browsers that computed thousands of bio-informatics tasks.

Concurrency in Mobile Browser Engines

Web browsers are one of the most pervasive applications for an entire range of personal computing platforms--from mobile devices to desktops. Using Web technologies (HTML, CSS, javascript) to build "Web apps" has the promise of creating portable applications for all platforms. Thus browsers become application containers, requiring increased performance from browser engines. Here, the authors discuss advances in browser technologies that exploit multicore processing. They use the Zoomm browser and the MuscalietJS javascript engine as running examples of highly concurrent Web browser and javascript engines. They show how concurrency is effectively exploited at different levels: to speed up computation performance, preload network resources, and preprocess resources outside the critical path to speed up page loading and Web workloads.

Any added complexity in a software system will increase the possible program states, introducing a larger attack surface and the possibility of more exploitable flaws. JIT engines, however, alter the environment in which they execute in far more interesting ways, not only through implementation flaws but also by their fundamental operation modes.

Taking back the Web

The original commercial Web browsers seemed more oriented toward pleasing Web page creators than their consumers. The author found the ability of scripts to take over browser processing, generate a desktop full of pop-up windows, and execute arbitrary code on my machine offensive. A Web page's source is clearly no deep secret, after all, it's revealed by a few lines of java. The author suspected a dark conspiracy between Microsoft and the page-creation establishment, but that limitation turned out to be a bug, provoked, among other things, by having an alias to the text viewer on the desktop. The Greasemonkey Firefox extension could change the way people view Web pages. It lets users load and execute javascripts on Web pages, allowing them to manipulate the pages content in certain ways. We have seen a continuing arms race between malware writers and detectors and between Web page creators and search engine writers. If this technology moves beyond high-tech early adopters to actually impact the way the Web is used, we should expect a similar continuing escalation of more clever Web page hacks and more cleverly generated Web pages.

Smart phones have become dramatically more powerful over the past 10 years, as the smart-phone community has focused on bringing the full, rich Web experience to mobile phones. Many content-adaptation technologies have been developed (and in some cases, are still under development) to improve the experience of browsing the Webís rich content using a smart phone. In addition to hosting and delivering a wide variety of rich content, the Web has become a platform for increasingly powerful applications. Ajax, Web 2.0, and so on are buzz words that attempt to quickly summarize the informal and growing collection of technologies that developers use to create and deploy Web applications. Web 2.0 presents both a challenge and an opportunity for smart-phone vendors.

Design of "Next-Generation" airframes based on supermarket-jet-engine-components is nowadays passe. A novel integration methodology [1, 2, 12, 26] is nowadays in. For advanced fighter aircraft it begins with JS-based powerplant, which takes up to three times longer to mature vis-a-vis the airframe, unless "committee's design" enforces a dormant catastrophe. Jet Steering (JS) or Thrust Vectoring Flight Control, is a classified, integrated engine-airframe technology aimed at maximizing post-stall-maneuverability, flight safety, efficiency and flight envelopes of manned and unmanned air vehicles, especially in the "impossible-to-fly", post-stall flight domains where the 100+ years old, stall-spin-limited, Conventional Flight Control fails. Worldwide success in adopting the post-stall, JS-revolution, opens a new era in aviation, with unprecedented design variables identified here for a critical review of F-35 future risks v. future fleets of jet-steered, pilotless vehicles, like the X-47B/C. From the educational point of view, it is also instructive to comprehend the causes of long, intensive opposition to adopt post-stall, JS ideas. A review of such debates may also curb a future opposition to adopt more advanced, JS-based technologies, tests, strategies, tactics and missions within the evolving air, marine and land applications of JS. Most important, re-education of pilots and engineers requires adding post-stall, JS-based studies to curriculum & R&D.
