The graphic arts industry is increasingly reliant on telecommunications for the transfer of digital data for media production; There are, however, many other aspects of the business process between customers and suppliers that are suited to network-based interaction. The transaction between customer and producer can be separated into four data streams: briefing, content creation and production, and approval. Each of these data streams has specific requirements which lead to a matrix of needs for the different parties in the transaction. These needs are reviewed and proposals made for meeting them through a network service dedicated to the graphic arts. British Telecom, MCI and Scitex are currently beta-testing a service based on these proposals, known as the Digital Graphic Network. Once a managed network service is in place, it is possible to extend it to include a range of other services and third-party interactions, such as automated transfer of media production objects such as high-resolution images, fonts, colour profiles etc. from third-party content providers. The opportunities for users and third-party developers to develop a custom interface between the network and internal production processes and monitoring systems using open systems based on the Java language is described.

Texture mapping is used frequently for the 3-D object in virtual environment. However, it is not easy to realize such texture mapping on the web browser because execution of program loaded over the network is limited by the WWW security. We propose a simple and effective method that enables to map an image in the client file onto the 3-D model loaded from web server. All operations can be done on the web browser. Calculation for texture mapping and for output 3-D representation are executed in the client computer, so loading task of web server is decreased. To demonstrate the procedure, we use a 3-D head model as the target of texture mapping. User can map his face picture to this model by himself and use the generated texture mapped 3-D head model as his "avatar" in virtual space. This method is implemented by Java and javascript, and evaluated in the actual computer system from calculation time.

This case study presents the World Wide Web as an appropriate medium for architectural teaching. The prototypical tool VRSolar uses simple programming and existing Web resources to help in the teaching of topics related to the movement of the sun and its effects on the built environment. Using javascript, this tool is capable of generating real time Web content in html and VRML based on user input. Accessible on the Web from within a standard Web browser, this tool calculates the solar positions of any location on earth and indicates the solar access to a given site in the form of a three-dimensional Web page, which the user can view, navigate through, and animate.

The graphic arts industry is increasingly reliant on telecommunications for the transfer of digital data for media production. There are, however, many other aspects of the business process between customers and suppliers that are suited to network-based interaction. The transaction between customer and producer can be separated into four data streams: briefing, content creation and production, and approval. Each of these data streams has specific requirements which lead to a matrix of needs for the different parties in the transaction. Proposals were made for meeting these needs through a network service dedicated to the graphic arts. British Telecom and Scitex are currently offering a service based on these proposals, known as Vie. A network service of this kind can be extended to include a range of other services and third-party interactions, such as automated transfer of media production objects from third-party content providers. The opportunities for users and third-party developers to develop a custom network applications and interfaces between the network and internal production processes and monitoring systems using open IP-based methods an described.
