Crowdsourcing has become a popular alternative model for software development, aiming at assigning tasks to developers through an open call for participation. The major challenge when crowdsourcing software tasks, is to appropriately orient the tasks to ensure the participation of the community and increase the chances of getting a high-quality solution. Especially in constantly evolving development environments, such as javascript (JS) programming language and its applications, it is of high importance to be aware of the skills that can be acquired by the community, to successfully invest in crowdsourcing. In the current paper, we aim to explore trends when crowdsourcing small JS development tasks in an attempt to unveil a) the core technological skills that are more frequently required in the crowdsourced tasks, b) the functionalities that are more frequently crowdsourced, and c) the relationship between the technological skills and the functionalities crowdsourced. For this reason, we analysed 8-year contest data collected from Bountify crowdsourcing platform. The results showed that JS small task development does not focus on a single technology but on a series of technologies, frameworks and libraries that in most cases either overlap or complement each other.

In 2015, our research laboratory started the definition and implementation of a Software Product Line (SPL) for the generation of web-based Geographic Information Systems. Tooling support for SPL was scarce, and we did not found any suitable alternative to implement the mentioned product line. Therefore, we built spl-js-engine, a javascript library that, following the annotative approach, can generate final product source code from the annotated code, the feature model of the product line, and a product specification. spl-js-engine validates the specification of the product against the feature model prior to the generation. Since its first implementation, we have used this tool in many occasions both in the academia and the industry contexts.

Promises and async/await have become popular mechanisms for implementing asynchronous computations in javascript, but despite their popularity, programmers have difficulty using them. This paper identifies 8 anti-patterns in promise-based javascript code that are prevalent across popular javascript repositories. We present a light-weight static analysis for automatically detecting these anti-patterns. This analysis is embedded in an interactive visualization tool that additionally relies on dynamic analysis to visualize promise lifetimes and instances of anti-patterns executed at run time. By enabling the user to navigate between promises in the visualization and the source code fragments that they originate from, problems and optimization opportunities can be identified. We implement this approach in a tool called DrAsync, and found 2.6K static instances of anti-patterns in 20 popular javascript repositories. Upon examination of a subset of these, we found that the majority of problematic code reported by DrAsync could be eliminated through refactoring. Further investigation revealed that, in a few cases, the elimination of anti-patterns reduced the time needed to execute the refactored code fragments. Moreover, DrAsync's visualization of promise lifetimes and relationships provides additional insight into the execution behavior of asynchronous programs and helped identify further optimization opportunities.

javascript is one of the most dominant programming languages. However, despite its popularity, it is a challenging task to correctly understand the behaviors of javascript programs because of their highly dynamic nature. Researchers have developed various static analyzers that strive to conform to ECMA-262, the standard specification of javascript. Unfortunately, all the existing javascript static analyzers require manual updates for new language features. This problem has become more critical since 2015 because the javascript language itself rapidly evolves with a yearly release cadence and open development process. In this paper, we present JSAVER, the first tool that automatically derives javascript static analyzers from language specifications. The main idea of our approach is to extract a definitional interpreter from ECMA-262 and perform a meta-level static analysis with the extracted interpreter. A meta-level static analysis is a novel technique that indirectly analyzes programs by analyzing a definitional interpreter with the programs. We also describe how to indirectly configure abstract domains and analysis sensitivities in a meta-level static analysis. For evaluation, we derived a static analyzer from the latest ECMA-262 (ES12, 2021) using JSAVER. The derived analyzer soundly analyzed all applicable 18,556 official conformance tests with 99.0% of precision in 590 ms on average. In addition, we demonstrate the configurability and adaptability of JSAVER with several case studies.

Dynamic taint analysis (DTA) is a popular approach to help protect javascript applications against injection vulnerabilities. In 2016, the ECMAScript 7 javascript language standard introduced many language features that most existing DTA tools for javascript do not support, e.g., the async/await keywords for asynchronous programming. We present Augur, a high-performance dynamic taint analysis for ES7 javascript that leverages VM-supported instrumentation. Integrating directly with a public, stable instrumentation API gives Augur the ability to run with high performance inside the VM and remain resilient to language revisions. We extend the abstract-machine approach to DTA to handle asynchronous function calls. In addition to providing the classic DTA use case of injection vulnerability detection, Augur is highly configurable to support any type of taint analysis, making it useful outside of the security domain. We evaluated Augur on a set of 20 benchmarks, and observed a median runtime overhead of only 1.77x, a median performance improvement of 298% compared to the previous state-of-the-art.

In the last two decades that there has been an explosion in the use of web applications. Given the ever expanding number of web and mobile apps, extensive work has been done in developing and using efficient core technologies to support the performance goals of the apps. In particular, front-end developer languages such as javascript are highly popular. In this paper, we perform a detailed study of the recently introduced Python-based web development framework PyScript and evaluate the performance of PyScript in comparison with javascript using standard benchmarks. The research contributions of this work are in the benchmarking of code in three different categories (i) DOM manipulation, (ii) Operations involving the network layer, and (iii)cpu-intensive computations. The benchmarks come from one of the standards and carefully implemented to perform a comparative evaluation. Results show that native javascript code runs faster on all DOM and networking sets of benchmarks by a factor of 1.5 to 5 when compared with PyScript, with the exception of two of the networking benchmarks. It is in the computationally intensive benchmarks that javascript trumps PyScript by a factor of 25 to 35 depending the algorithm. We offer architectural insights into performance issues and conclude with directions on further research.

javascript (JS) is one of the most popular programming languages, and widely used for web apps, mobile apps, desktop clients, and even backend development. Due to its dynamic and flexible nature, however, JS applications often have a reputation for poor software quality. While the type-safe superset TypeScript (TS) offers features to address these prejudices, there is currently insufficient empirical evidence to broadly support the claim that TS applications exhibit better software quality than JS applications. We therefore conducted a repository mining study based on 604 GitHub projects (299 for JS, 305 for TS) with over 16M LoC. Using SonarQube and the GitHub API, we collected and analyzed four facets of software quality: a) code quality (# of code smells per LoC), b) code understandability (cognitive complexity per LoC), c) bug proneness (bug fix commit ratio), and d) bug resolution time (mean time a bug issue is open). For TS, we also collected how frequently the type-safety ignoring any type was used per project via ESLint. The analysis indicates that TS applications exhibit significantly better code quality and understandability than JS applications. Contrary to expectations, however, bug proneness and bug resolution time of our TS sample were not significantly lower than for JS: the mean bug fix commit ratio of TS projects was more than 60% larger (0.126 vs. 0.206), and TS projects needed on average more than an additional day to fix bugs (31.86 vs. 33.04 days). Furthermore, reducing the usage of the any type in TS apps appears to be beneficial: its frequency was significantly correlated with all metrics except bug proneness, even though the correlations were of small strengths (Spearman's rho between 0.17 and 0.26). Our results indicate that the perceived positive influence of Type-Script for avoiding bugs in comparison to javascript may be more complicated than assumed. While using TS seems to have benefits, it does not automatically lead to less and easier

Static analysis has established itself as a weapon of choice for detecting security vulnerabilities. Taint analysis in particular is a very general and powerful technique, where security policies are expressed in terms of forbidden flows, either from untrusted input sources to sensitive sinks (in integrity policies) or from sensitive sources to untrusted sinks (in confidentiality policies). The appeal of this approach is that the taint-tracking mechanism has to be implemented only once, and can then be parameterized with different taint specifications (that is, sets of sources and sinks, as well as any sanitizers that render otherwise problematic flows innocuous) to detect many different kinds of vulnerabilities. But while techniques for implementing scalable inter-procedural static taint tracking are fairly well established, crafting taint specifications is still more of an art than a science, and in practice tends to involve a lot of manual effort. Past work has focussed on automated techniques for inferring taint specifications for libraries either from their implementation or from the way they tend to be used in client code. Among the latter, machine learning-based approaches have shown great promise. In this work we present our experience combining an exist- ing machine-learning approach to mining sink specifications for javascript libraries with manual taint modelling in the context of Gill-tub's CodeQL analysis framework. We show that the machine-learning component can successfully infer many new taint sinks that either are not part of the manual modelling or are not detected due to analysis incompleteness. Moreover, we present techniques for organizing sink predictions using automated ranking and code- similarity metrics that allow an analysis engineer to efficiently sift through large numbers of predictions to identify true positives.

javascript is increasingly used for the Internet of Things (IoT) on embedded systems. However, javascript's memory footprint is a challenge, because normal javascript virtual machines (VMs) do not fit into the small memory of IoT devices. In part this is because a significant amount of memory is used by hidden classes, which are used to represent javascript's dynamic objects efficiently. In this research, we optimize the hidden class graph to minimize their memory use. Our solution collects the hidden class graph and related information for an application in a profiling run, and optimizes the graph offline. We reduce the number of hidden classes by avoiding introducing intermediate ones, for instance when properties are added one after another. Our optimizations allow the VM to assign the most likely final hidden class to an object at its creation. They also minimize re-allocation of storage for property values, and reduce the polymorphism of inline caches. We implemented these optimizations in a javascript VM, eJSVM, and found that offline optimization can eliminate 61.9% of the hidden classes on average. It also improves execution speed by minimizing the number of hidden class transitions for an object and reducing inline cache misses.

Leveraging javascript (JS) for User Interface (UI) interactivity has been the norm on the web for many years. Yet, using JS increases bandwidth and battery consumption as scripts need to be downloaded and processed by the browser. Plus, client-side JS may expose visitors to security vulnerabilities such as Cross-Site Scripting (XSS). This paper introduces a newserver-side plugin, called JSRehab, that automatically rewrites common web interface components by alternatives that do not require any javascript (JS). The main objective of JSRehab is to drastically reduce-and ultimately remove-the inclusion of JS in a web page to improve its responsiveness and consume less resources. We report on our implementation of JSRehab for Bootstrap, the most popular UI framework by far, and evaluate it on a corpus of 100webpages. We show through manual validation that it is indeed possible to lower the dependencies of pages on JS while keeping intact its interactivity and accessibility. We observe that JSRehab brings energy savings of at least 5 % for the majority of web pages on the tested devices, while introducing a median on-the-wire overhead of only 5 % to the HTML payload.
