An energy-efficient clustered distributed coding for large-scale wireless sensor networks

A wireless sensor network (WSN) usually consists of a large number of battery-powered low-cost sensors with limited data collection and processing capacity. In order to prolong the lifetime of the WSN with a target error performance, a novel clustered distributed coding framework, referred to as distributed multiple-sensor cooperative turbo coding (DMSCTC), is developed for a large-scale WSN with sensor grouped in cooperative cluster. In the proposed DMSCTC scheme, a simple forward error correction is employed at each sensor and a simple multi-sensor joint coding is adopted at the cluster head, while complicated joint iterative decoding is implemented only at the data collector. The proposed DMSCTC scheme achieves extra distributed coding gain and cooperative spatial diversity without introducing extra complexity burden on the sensors by transferring the complicated joint decoding process to the data collector. With the proposed scheme, the WSN can achieve the target error performance with less power consumption, thus prolonging its lifetime. The error performance and energy efficiency of the proposed DMSCTC scheme are analyzed, and followed by Monte Carlo simulations. Both analytical and simulation results show that the DMSCTC can substantially improve the energy efficiency of the clustered WSN.

With the increasing number of mobile terminals, the capacity of cellular network can hardly satisfy the user requirement in the future. In next generation cellular systems, heterogeneous network is proposed to improve the spatial spectrum efficiency. In this paper, we study a joint coding scheme to increase the achievable sum-rate of multi-carrier heterogeneous systems, where we introduce transmission cooperation among subcarriers in the amplitude space to assist interference elimination at the receiver. Specifically, we propose to transmit information through cross links on some of the subcarriers where the users suffer from the strong interference, and use this information at the receiver to cancel the interference experienced on other subcarriers. We develop the direct-link transmission strategy using layered lattice code, and design subcarrier allocation algorithm between direct-link and cross-link transmissions. Simulation results show that the proposed joint coding scheme achieves higher sum rate than separated coding schemes in strong interference channels.

New 3D applications such as 3DTV and FVV require not only a large amount of data, but also high-quality visual rendering. Based on one or several depth maps, intermediate views can be synthesized using a depth image-based rendering technique. Many compression schemes have been proposed for texture-plus-depth data, but the exploitation of the correlation between the two representations in enhancing compression performances is still an open research issue. In this paper, we present a novel compression scheme that aims at improving the depth coding using a joint depth/texture coding scheme. This method is an extension of the LAR (Locally Adaptive Resolution) codec, initially designed for 2D images. The LAR coding framework provides a lot of functionalities such as lossy/lossless compression, low complexity, resolution and quality scalability and quality control. Experimental results address both lossless and lossy compression aspects, considering some state of the art techniques in the two domains (JPEGLS, JPEGXR). Subjective results on the intermediate view synthesis after depth map coding show that the proposed method significantly improves the visual quality.

Robust degraded face recognition with novel face representation and multiscale fusion

Recognizing degraded faces from low-resolution and blurry images is a common yet challenging task. We propose appealing solutions to this problem without any image reconstruction, without any limitation to blur type, and only using high-quality samples to design a classifier. Shortterm Fourier transform (STFT) is an effective and concise transform for face recognition, yet its effectiveness depends on two important issues: one is face representation construction from STFT;the other is a scale-named window size of STFT. To deal with the first issue, we explore the increased discrimination brought by joint coding and using multiple frequency combinations. Specifically, we propose a novel local descriptor in which information of a pixel coming from two frequencies is jointly encoded and multiple two-frequency combinations are jointly utilized so as to construct a more descriptive and discriminative face representation. To deal with the second issue, we propose a multiscale fusion strategy that extracts multiple descriptors corresponding with multiple window sizes of STFT followed by equal weighted summation of outputs given by multiple scales. The experiments conducted on face databases confirm that state-of-the-art performance has been achieved by the proposed novel face representation and multiscale fusion strategy. This paper presents an efficient depth map coding method based on color information in multi-view plus depth (MVD) system. As compared to the conventional depth map coding in which depth video is separately coded, the proposed scheme involves color information for depth map coding. In details, the proposed algorithm subsamples input depth data along temporal direction to reduce the bit-rate, and non-encoded depth frames are recovered at the decoder side guided by the motion information extracted from the decoded color video. The simulation results shows the high coding efficiency of the proposed scheme, and it also shows that recovered depth frame are not much different from the reconstructed one. Furthermore, it can even provide temporally consistent depth map which results in better subjective quality for view-interpolation.

Few works has been focused on the problem of joint distributed data compression and network coding. In this paper we give some examples showing the advantage of broadcast nature of wireless environment as a basis for joint codes design. Also we show that joint coding is possible in the case of multiple unicasts. The idea of this paper can be exploited in an opportunistic manner. Actually, the foundation of our idea is nothing but combining opportunistic network coding (COPE) and distributed source coding using syndromes (DISCUS) for wireless applications.

This paper proposes the novel joint coding suitable for dependable and secure systems. The proposed joint coding has three functions: data compression, public-key encryption and error control coding. This coding provides very low encoding complexity due to realising only by simple matrix computation, which gives an efficient transmission of data in networks and a high speed execution in computers. In an encoding process, input data is firstly converted to a sparse sequence, which is then encoded using the encoding matrix generated by linear block codes and randomly constructed non-singular matrices. Decoding is performed based on error correction algorithm of the linear block codes. Evaluation shows that the encoder gate count of the proposed joint coding for still images is smaller than that of the conventional separate coding by 65.7%.

We propose a wavelet-based codec for the static depth-image-based representation, which allows viewers to freely choose the viewpoint. The proposed codec jointly estimates and encodes the unknown depth map from multiple views using a novel rate-distortion (RD) optimization scheme. The rate constraint reduces the ambiguity of depth estimation by favoring piece-wise-smooth depth maps. The optimization is efficiently solved by a novel dynamic programming along trees of integer wavelet coefficients. The codec encodes the image and the depth map jointly to decrease their redundancy and to provide a RD-optimized bitrate allocation between the two. The codec also offers scalability both in resolution and in quality. Experiments on real data show the effectiveness of the proposed codec.

We present a novel codec of depth-image-based representations for free-viewpoint 3D-TV. The proposed codec relies on a shape-adaptive wavelet transform and an explicit representation of the locations of major depth edges. Unlike classical wavelet transforms, the shape-adaptive transform generates small wavelet coefficients along depth edges, which greatly reduces the data entropy. The codec also shares the edge information between the depth map and the image to reduce their correlation. The wavelet transform is implemented by shape-adaptive lifting, which enables fast computations and perfect reconstruction. Experimental results on real data confirm the superiority of the proposed codec, with PSNR gains of up to 5.46dB on the depth map and up to 0.19dB on the image compared to standard wavelet codecs.
