Low computational complexity joint iterative detection and decoding without ARQ in massive MIMO systems with UAVs

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have a wide range of military and commercial applications. UAVs play an important role in 6G networks due to their low cost and flexible positioning. UAVs can play different roles in the network and act as an air base station, as a relay, or as users in cellular networks. One of the major challenges in these systems is to increase lifespan with low energy consumption. The automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol is used to increase throughput and obtain dependable communications for multi-input multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, even in the presence of severe propagation conditions. On the other hand, (UAV)-enabled communication system provides flexibility and reliability compared to conventional ones which have been considered in the new generation of wireless communications. Thus, using ARQ protocols in this system faces serious challenges such as increasing delay and operational implementation complexities in the receiver. Therefore, to meet the ARQ challenge in the uplink of massive MIMO systems, we have investigated utilizing joint iterative detection and decoding methods with reduced computational complexity have been proposed in a UAV-enabled communication system in the condition that users are equipped with two antennas to provide a solution to reduce energy consumption. In this structure, system performance improves as the computational complexity increases. Therefore, we look for methods that reduce complexity while maintaining system performance at an acceptable level. In this study, we seek to provide a solution that can establish a reasonable compromise between system performance and computational complexity. This aim is achieved by establishing a connection between the components of soft joint detection and decoding, linear detection with approximation methods, and sorting. Polar coding and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) technique are excellent candidates for 5G, and have a promising prospect in optical communication, the joint design of polar coded sparse code multiple access (PC-SCMA) system is important to enhance the overall system performance. In this paper, a serial joint iterative detection and decoding scheme is proposed by passing message between serial max-log message passing algorithm and soft cancellation (SCAN) algorithm, the strategy can accelerate the algorithm convergence speed by reducing the number of required iterations, decrease the computational complexity and achieve ideal bit error rate (BER) performance. In order to further improve the BER performance, a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is added in the joint iterative process as an early stopping criterion to avoid decoding divergence caused by a low signal to noise ratio (SNR). Simulation results demonstrate that the addition of a termination mechanism can obtain an excellent performance gain compares with the conventional JIDD algorithm.

On the performance of joint iterative detection and decoding in coherent optical channels with laser frequency fluctuations

The joint iterative detection and decoding (JIDD) technique has been proposed by Barbieri et al. (2007) with the objective of compensating the time-varying phase noise and constant frequency offset experienced in satellite communication systems. The application of JIDD to optical coherent receivers in the presence of laser frequency fluctuations has not been reported in prior literature. Laser frequency fluctuations are caused by mechanical vibrations, power supply noise, and other mechanisms. They significantly degrade the performance of the carrier phase estimator in high-speed intradyne coherent optical receivers. This work investigates the performance of the JIDD algorithm in multi-gigabit optical coherent receivers. We present simulation results of bit error rate (BER) for non-differential polarization division multiplexing (PDM)-16QAM modulation in a 200 Gb/s coherent optical system that includes an LDPC code with 20% overhead and net coding gain of 11.3 dB at BER = 10(-15). Our study shows that JIDD with a pilot rate <= 5% compensates for both laser phase noise and laser frequency fluctuation. Furthermore, since JIDD is used with non-differential modulation formats, we find that gains in excess of 1 dB can be achieved over existing solutions based on an explicit carrier phase estimator with differential modulation. The impact of the fiber nonlinearities in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems is also investigated. Our results demonstrate that JIDD is an excellent candidate for application in next generation high-speed optical coherent receivers. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.

An Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Non-Binary Polar Coded SCMA Scheme

The joint transmission scheme of polar codes and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) has been regarded as a promising technology for future wireless communication systems. However, most of the existing polar-coded SCMA (PC-SCMA) systems suffer from high latency caused by the feedback iteration and list decoding. In addition, the error performance of PC-SCMA systems is unsatisfactory for ultra-reliable transmission. Inspired by the compelling benefits of non-binary polar codes, in this paper, we design a non-binary polar-coded SCMA (NB-PC-SCMA) system with a free order matching strategy to address the issues of delay and reliability. Specifically, we first formulate a joint factor graph for NB-PC-SCMA and propose a non-binary successive cancellation list (NB-SCL) and damping based joint iterative detection and decoding (NSD-JIDD) multiuser receiver to improve the BER and latency performance. Then, a lazy-search based NB-SCL (L-NB-SCL) decoding is proposed to reduce the computational complexity by simplifying the path search pattern of the list decoder. After that, we modify the update of user nodes for SCMA detection to improve the convergence error and finally propose the improved NSD-JIDD (ISD-JIDD) algorithm, which can avoid redundant operations by exploiting L-NB-SCL decoding. Simulation results show that the proposed NB-PC-SCMA system achieves better bit error rate (BER) performance and considerable latency gain when compared to its counterparts. In particular, the proposed ISD-JIDD can achieve similar BER performance of NSD-JIDD with less complexity.

joint iterative detection and decoding (JIDD) methods with minimum mean-squared-error parallel interference cancellation (MMSE-PIC) are usually used for signal detection in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. However, the computational complexity caused by computation of Gram matrix and matrix inversion is unbearable for massive MIMO systems. In addition, MMSE-PIC also suffers from high complexity in calculating soft bit information (SBI) and post-equalization signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (PE-SINR). In this paper, we propose a complexity reduced soft MMSE-PIC detection scheme by approximating the Gram matrix with a derived diagonal matrix. Besides, we also apply an efficient soft symbol estimation method based on a symbol mapping technique to further reduce the computational complexity. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve approximating performance to the conventional method with linearorder computational complexity.

In order to achieve the full potential of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, joint iterative detection and decoding (JIDD) methods are often used. In addition, minimum mean-square-error parallel interference cancellation (MMSE-PIC) technique is usually employed for JIDD-based MIMO systems due to the good trade-off between complexity and performance. In spite of this, the operations of matrix inversion still bring great pressure to the complexity of the system. In this paper, we propose complexity reduced MMSE-PIC detection methods for JIDD schemes. The presented methods combine the Newton iteration method with MMSE-PIC for JIDD systems to reduce the computational complexity of matrix inversion. The simulation results reveal that the proposed methods can reduce the complexity without obvious performance degradation.

Minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based techniques are often used for the joint iterative detection and decoding that is for coded multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system due to a sound complexity and the performance trade-off. This study proposes an enhanced MMSE-based soft MIMO-detection scheme by using three main ideas. The first idea is an efficient complexity-reduced soft-bit estimation technique, the second one is a performance improvement method utilised inside the MMSE detection process, and the third one is a complexity-reduced soft-symbol estimation method for quadrature amplitude modulation. The proposed ideas enable the interference-cancellation processes to be activated in parallel on each symbol layer, thereby reducing the processing time. The simulation results show that the proposed method efficiently contributes to the improvement of the performance in addition to its reduction of the linear-order complexity.

joint iterative detection and decoding scheme is exploited for a Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Orthogonal-Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. A simplified channel estimation utilizing channel frequency-domain correlation is used to decrease FFT order and provide channel state Information for the demapper. An improved list sphere-decoding (ILSD) SISO demapper without the requirement of initial radius is also adopted. The computation complexity of ILSD can be further reduced by the simplified channel estimation method. Simulations show that the BICM MIMO-OFDM scheme is robust to the timing-vary frequency selective fading channels. Performance degradation caused by simplification can be compensated by increasing the iterative number of the receiver.
