In this paper, we propose a three-stage rateless coded protocol for a half-duplex time-division two-way relay system, where two terminals send messages to each other through a relay between them. In the protocol, each terminal takes one of the first two stages respectively to encode its message using rateless code and broadcast the result until the relay acknowledges successful decoding. During the third stage, the relay combines and re-encodes both messages with a joint network-channel coding scheme based on rateless coding which provides incremental redundancy. Together with the packets received directly in previous stages, each terminal then retrieves the desired message using an iterative decoder. The degree profiles of the specific rateless codes, i.e., Raptor codes, implemented at both terminals and the relay, are jointly optimized for both the AWGN channel and the Rayleigh block fading channel through solving a set of linear programming problems. Simulation results show that, the system throughput as well as the error rate achieved by the optimized degree profiles always outperforms those achieved by the conventional degree profile optimized for Binary Erasure channel (BEC) and the previous network coding scheme with rateless codes.

In this paper, we consider an asymmetric time-division multiple access relay system consisting of two sources, one relay and one destination, where the channel conditions and message lengths of the two sources are allowed to be different. To enhance the link robustness and the system throughput, joint network-channel coding (JNCC) is employed with a specially designed rateless code which conducts both the channel coding and network coding simultaneously. In particular, at the sources, messages are rateless coded and then broadcasted to the relay and destination. While at the relay, a novel two-dimensional (2 - D) LT code is proposed, which jointly encodes the precoded message bits of the two sources using a 2 - D degree profile and at the meantime completes the network coding inherently. Interestingly, the proposed scheme can be degraded to several conventional JNCC schemes based on rateless coding. To further approach the theoretical limit, the corresponding degree profiles implemented at both sources and the relay are jointly designed based on the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) function analysis. Simulations show that our proposed JNCC scheme with the optimized degree profiles outperforms other JNCC schemes with the conventional profiles both on the BER and throughput performances.

Energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks is a crucial factor that affects the performance of the networks, as long-time and unceasing energy supply is impossible. Recent studies demonstrated that the previously proposed scheme of joint adaptive network-channel coding (JANCC) and adaptive dynamic energy consumption (ADEC) obtained an excellent performance in terms of energy efficiency. Based on the joint network-channel coding, we propose an enhanced ADEC optimization scheme, which integrates the essence of both JANCC and ADEC, and overcomes the shortcomings of them. In the scheme, an identifier vector is inserted into the feedback information. The relay node is able to acquire the specific signs of the channel codes received in error based on the identifier vector and transmit the network coded packets only related to those channel codes received in error. Through this method, it can achieve adjustments for the current round of transmission. Performance analyses and simulation results show that the proposed optimization scheme is more energy efficient than any other schemes of interest under the condition of meeting the requirement of transmission reliability.

joint network-channel codes (JNCC) can improve the performance of communication in wireless networks, by combining, at the physical layer, the channel codes and the network code as an overall error-correcting code. JNCC is increasingly proposed as an alternative to a standard layered construction, such as the OSI-model. The main performance metrics for JNCCs are scalability to larger networks and error rate. The diversity order is one of the most important parameters determining the error rate. The literature on JNCC is growing, but a rigorous diversity analysis is lacking, mainly because of the many degrees of freedom in wireless networks, which makes it very hard to prove general statements on the diversity order. In this article, we consider a network with slowly varying fading point-to-point links, where all sources also act as relay and additional non-source relays may be present. We propose a general structure for JNCCs to be applied in such network. In the relay phase, each relay transmits a linear transform of a set of source codewords. Our main contributions are the proposition of an upper and lower bound on the diversity order, a scalable code design and a new lower bound on the word error rate to assess the performance of the network code. The lower bound on the diversity order is only valid for JNCCs where the relays transform only two source codewords. We then validate this analysis with an example which compares the JNCC performance to that of a standard layered construction. Our numerical results suggest that as networks grow, it is difficult to perform significantly better than a standard layered construction, both on a fundamental level, expressed by the outage probability, as on a practical level, expressed by the word error rate.

In order to obtain higher diversity gain, the use of additional resources such as time, frequency, and/or antennas are necessary. The aim of this study is to achieve adequate temporal diversity gain without needing additional resources beyond decoding delay and decoding complexity. If the channel state information (CSI) is not available at the transmitter side, the transmitter sends information at a given constant transmission rate while the channel capacity varies according to the channel state. If the instantaneous channel capacity is greater than the given transmission rate, the system can successfully transmit information but it does not exploit the entire available channel capacity. We focus on this extra channel capacity to transmit other information based on a joint network-channel coding in order to obtain higher diversity and coding gains. This paper provides the basic concept of the transmit diversity with the joint network-channel coding and investigates its performances in terms of outage probability, additional decoding delay and complexity, and frame-error rate (FER).

joint Adaptive network-channel coding for Energy-Efficient Multiple-Access Relaying

An energy-efficient orthogonal multiple-access relay channel (MARC) system is developed, where accumulator and differential detection (DD) are used at the source and relay nodes, respectively. However, the weak decoding capability of DD degrades the frame error rate (FER) performance of the orthogonal MARC system if the conventional decode-and-forward relaying strategy is applied. In this paper, a novel joint adaptive network-channel coding (JANCC) technique is proposed to support DD by making efficient use of the erroneous estimates output from DD. In the JANCC technique, the destination constructs a vector identifying the indexes of the source nodes whose information parts contain errors and sends it to the relay to request a retransmission. The relay performs network coding by taking the exclusive-OR (XOR)-operation only over the stored estimates specified by the identifier vector, which aims to avoid unnecessary erroneous estimates being coded. In addition, a bit-flipping probability p(nc) is obtained between the two sequences;one is the network-coded sequence sent from the relay, and the other is their corresponding XOR-ed information sequence. The decoding algorithm of JANCC exploits probability pnc at the destination to update the log-likelihood ratio during the iterative decoding process. Hence, the information sequences received at the destination are able to be recovered, although the redundancy forwarded from the relay is generated from the erroneous estimates. Compared with the system where iterative decoding is performed at the relay, the utilization of DD significantly reduces the computational complexity, which leads to meaningful power savings with only a small loss in FER performance.

In this letter, we present several cooperative incremental redundancy hybrid automatic repeat request strategies for the slow-fading half-duplex time slotted multiple access multiple relay channel. At a given retransmission round, the proposed strategies main steps are: 1) the destination acknowledges the successful decoding of the sources via limited feedback control channels;2) the relays inform the destination about the result of their own decoding via forward coordination control channels;3) the destination schedules the re-transmission in order to minimize the common outage probability of the system with the overall goal to maximize the long-term aggregate throughput;and 4) the scheduled relay cooperates with a subset of the successfully decoded sources (implicitly or explicitly indicated by the destination) applying either distributed coding or joint network channel coding. The analytical derivation of the individual (per source) and common outage probability plays an essential role in the scheduling algorithm and the performance evaluation. Numerical results show that the proposed strategies with control channels significantly outperform the one without control channels even when the impact of the control overhead is taken into account.

We introduce algorithms to design robust network codes in the presence of link failures for multicast in a directed acyclic network. Robustness is achieved through diversity provided by the network links and flows, while the maximum multicast rate due to max-flow min-cut bound is maintained. The proposed scheme is a receiver-based robust network coding, which exploits the diversity due to the possible gap of the specific receivers min-cut with respect to the network multicast capacity. An improved version of this scheme guarantees multicast capacity for a certain level of failures. In a multicast session, failure of a flow may not necessarily reduce the capacity of the network as other useful branches within the network could still facilitate back up routes (flows) from the source to the sinks. We introduce a scheme to employ backup flows in addition to the main flows to multicast data at maximum rate h, when possible. In a limiting case, the scheme guarantees the rate h, for all link failure patterns, which do not decrease the maximum rate below h. Here, the number of link failures may in general exceed the refined singleton bound.

In this paper, we develop a joint design method of network-channel Low Density Parity Check codes (LDPC) codes by constructing joint network-channel parity check matrix. Random network coding is performed to provide side information for both the Source and Relay's transmission. This system matrix makes an easy way to collect all independent signal copies to provide a spatial diversity gain. And the complexity of network coding is linear to the block length similar to O(n). Then, the optimization of joint network-channel LDPC code is conducted in term of maximizing the system rate. Based on the joint network-hannel LDPC codes, we presents a protocol for wireless cooperative communications, which is very effective to combat the channel fading without much rise in system bandwidth and transmitting power. A traditional three-node model is built to describe the protocol where relay not only helps source to transmit but also has its own information to transmit.
