In wireless sensor networks, due to the bandwidth constraint, the distributed nodes (DNs) might only provide binary representatives of the source signal, and then transmit them to the central node (CN). In this paper, we consider the joint estimation of signal amplitude and background noise variance from binary observations over decentralized channels. We first analyze the Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) of the parameters of interest and develop a quasilinear estimator (QLE), in which the desirable estimates can be obtained from several intermediate parameters linearly. Next, we consider a more realistic situation where the decentralized channel is noisy during the data transmission. Based on the error propagation model, the asymptotic analysis shows that the performance of the proposed QLE is mainly dominated by the thresholds of the quantizers, which encourages us to adopt a correlated quantization (CQ) scheme by exploiting the spatial correlation among background noises/channel noises. To ease the implementation of QLE in practice, an adaptive quantization (AQ) scheme is also proposed so as to obtain reasonable selections of the required thresholds. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to validate our theoretical findings.

To reduce the complexity of direction-of-arrival (DOA) algorithms in polarization-sensitive arrays and maintain high estimation accuracy while decreasing runtime, this paper proposes a channel compression model based on orthogonal dipole arrays. In addition, a DOA estimation algorithm using atomic norm minimization (ANM) is introduced for this model. This algorithm performs eigenvalue decomposition on the covariance matrix of the data received from the polarization-sensitive channel compressed array. A new observation vector is constructed for the ANM problem under the channel compression model using the obtained eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Subsequently, a Toeplitz matrix is constructed from the optimal solution of the semi- positive definite programming (SDP) problem. The Vandermonde decomposition of the Toeplitz matrix provides estimates of the signal DOA parameters. By combining the vectorization result of the covariance matrix and the least-squares calculation, the polarization auxiliary angle and polarization phase angle information of the incident source are also obtained. Simulation experiments compare the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of each algorithm at different angular intervals and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) to confirm the validity of estimating DOA and polarization parameters.

In the paper,polarization-sensitive array is exploited at the receiver of multiple input multiple output （MIMO） radar system,a novel method is proposed for joint estimation of direction of departure （DOD）,direction of arrival （DOA） and polarization parameters for bistatic MIMO radars.A signal model of polarimetric MIMO radar is developed,and the multi-parameter estimation algorithm for target localization is described by exploiting polarization array processing and the invariance property in both transmitter array and receiver *** making use of polarization diversity techniques,the proposed method has advantages over traditional localization algorithms for bistatic MIMO *** show that the performance of DOD and DOA estimation is greatly enhanced when different states of polarization of echoes is fully ***,when two targets are closely spaced and cannot be well separated in spatial domain,the estimation resolution of traditional algorithms will be greatly *** the proposed algorithm can work well and achieve high-resolution identification and accurate localization of multiple targets.

Ziv-Zakai Bound for joint parameter estimation in MIMO Radar Systems

Local bounds, such as the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB), provide inaccurate predictions under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Global bounds are capable of providing more accurate predictions of the performance of estimators over the full range of SNR. In this paper, we derive the Ziv-Zakai bound (ZZB) for joint location and velocity estimation of a target illuminated by a non-coherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar employing orthogonal waveforms and widely spaced antennas. The setup captures the multistatic nature of the target gains, where each pair of transmit-receive elements experience independent gains governed by the Swerling type 1 model. The target returns are observed in the presence of spatially and temporally independent Gaussian clutter-plus-noise. The ZZB for joint delay and Doppler estimation for single-input and single-output (SISO) radar is also developed. We show that the ZZB is a comprehensive metric that captures the effect of the SNR, the ambiguity function (AF) and other parameters of the radar systems. The effects of different system configurations are explored through numerical studies. The results are useful for the analysis of both active and passive radars.

Passive multiple-input multiple-output radar is studied for the problem of joint estimation of target location and velocity. A general case is considered, where the signals of opportunity may be non-orthogonal and the clutter-plus-noise may be correlated. The maximum likelihood estimate is provided and the Cramer-Rao bound is derived. The authors show the performance gain obtained from coherent processing and analyse the performance variation induced by the effects of signal non-orthogonality and the correlation of the clutter-plus-noise components.

This paper proposes a new approach for the parameter estimation of the randomly-phase varying multiple periodic signals. The phase-varying multiple signal is often observed in digital communication signals. The proposed method enables us to blindly and jointly estimate the period, the number of sources (NOS) and the fundamental waveform, for each of the multiple signals. The performance is verified through computer simulations.

A Fast Method for Multidimensional joint parameter estimation of Polarization-Sensitive Arrays

The paper proposes a fast method for the multidimensional parameter estimation of a polarization-sensitive array. Compared with conventional methods (e.g., MUSIC algorithm), the proposed method applies an iterative approach based on Newton's method to obtain joint estimation results instead of a spectral search and dimension reduction. It also extends the original Newton method to the 4D scale using the Hessian matrix. To reduce the complexity of establishing the aim function, Nystrom's method is applied to process the covariance matrix. A new threshold is also proposed to select the results, which can accomplish the parameter estimation with a small number of iterations while guaranteeing a high estimation accuracy. Finally, the proposed algorithm is analyzed in detail and the numerical simulations of various algorithms are compared to verify its effectiveness.

This study proposes a new approach for parameter estimation of random-phase varying multiple periodic signals. A phase-varying multiple signal is typically observed in digital communication signals wherein the phase of a signal is discretely varied due to modulation. Additionally, the study investigates the performance of the proposed method with respect to signals in which the phase varies continuously in addition to discrete phase varying. The proposed method enables blind and joint estimation of the period, the number of sources (NOS), and the fundamental waveform for each of the multiple signals. The performance of the method is verified by using a computer simulation.

In this paper, as a preliminary study, we show that accuracy and repeatability in ambulatory measurements of wrist joint are related to movement conditions which are going to be used in a calibration procedure. We chose two representative in-vivo, non-invasive calibration methods of the human upper limb, from those available in literature, to estimate joint parameters. Developing an analytical model of wrist joint we used sets of synthetic data each of which containing different number of samples, joint covariations and noise to estimate the repeatability and accuracy of the methods in estimation. Afterwards, we used our mechanical mock-up to examine single joint motions as well as the rotation of both joints (i.e. flexion-extension rotation and radial-ulnar deviation) on accuracy and repeatability by calculating the mean and standard deviation of the relative errors. Finally, we show that the accuracy of adapted method (its relative error was less than 7%) is better than the other method in estimating the joint parameters.

In order to solve the problem of multi-parameter joint estimation of multi-band signals in mixed-field (MF), a sub-Nyquist sampling structure is designed and a multi-parameter joint estimation framework based on symmetric uniform linear array (ULA) is proposed. Under this framework, multi-parameter estimation of MF signals can be achieved at sub-Nyquist sampling rates. The frequency, direction of arrival (DOA) and distance parameters of the MF signals are automatically paired and each step is the estimation of one-dimensional parameters, which simplifies calculation complexity while avoiding parameter pairing ambiguity.
