We propose a joint source channel coding framework for real time transmission of H.264/AVC single layer video signals over wireless MIMO channels. In the proposed framework the different layers of the communication system exchange information with central controller which decides on the parameters that should be used within different layers to optimize the quality of the received video. The MIMO channel is characterized by the probability density function of its mutual information and the performance of the H.264/AVC encoder is modeled by a rate distortion model that takes into account the channel errors. The framework allows for the video encoder adaptation, given the current video frame, to minimize the total distortion taking into account the available system resources and channel statistics. We show the effectiveness of the proposed framework in video transmission over MIMO Rayleigh fading channels, when channel distribution information is available at the transmitter.

Analog joint source channel coding techniques for a discrete time analog system is proposed and analyzed. The proposed system has all-analog-processing joint source-channel coding with MMSE, ML. Utilization of multiple antennas helps in bridging performance margin between ML and MMSE which arises in high signal to noise (SNR) scenario. Further, spatial diversity is proposed as a viable alternative to multiple antenna systems. The application of the Amplify-and-Forward (AF) protocol with single antenna nodes results in similar performance to that of a two antenna system with Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC). A performance analysis of different decoders for a wireless system is performed. MMSE performs nearly equal to that of constrained capacity of digital techniques with scalar quantization.

This paper considers the joint source channel coding using a new class of DFT codes which we refer to as Hermitian symmetric DFT (HSDFT) codes. A new decoding algorithm for decoding of HSDFT codes is presented. With this new decoding algorithm and an appropriate transmission scheme, HSDFT codes are capable of correcting more burst errors than the capacity of any maximum distance separable (MDS) code. Experimental results obtained by transmission of image over binary symmetric channel and Gilbert-Elliot channel are also presented, which show that HSDFT codes perform similar to the existing DFT class of codes on a binary symmetric channel while it performs consistently better (by around 2dB) on a Gilbert-Elliot like channel.

In conventional system of wireless communication the source and the channel coding are used in different modules that increases the system complexity, cost and overall processing period. To make it more efficient, both the source and channel coding modules are combined in a single processing block, which not only decreases the system complexity but also reduces the overall processing cost. Multi Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) technique which is a combination of CDMA and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) provides higher capacity. The proposed approach combines joint source channel coding with MC-CDIVIA. Through integrity check and receiver control mechanism, our system is able to subscribe to a desired broadcast session. The proposed approach result in a capacity which is nearly equals to the upper bound of the ratio C/H where C is the channel capacity and H is the entropy of the source.

In this paper, we have considered the broadcasting of a memoryless bivariate Gaussian source over a Gaussian broadcast channel with respect to bandwidth compression. We have analysed the performance of a hybrid digital-analog (HDA) coding system in combination with joint source channel coding (JSCC) to measure the distortion regions. The transmission advantages due to the combination of both the analog and digital techniques, a class of HDA schemes that yields better performance in distortion is discussed. The performance of source and channel coding for the possible better outcome of the system is measured by employing Wyner-Ziv and Costa coding. In our model, we have considered the upper layer to be a combination of a hybrid layer in the sense of both the analog and digital processing is done. This is executed in presence of quantization error and performance of the system is measured with two conditions: 1) HDA scheme with quantization scaling factor alpha = 0, i.e. the input of the channel have only the analog information which is considered as the scaled quantization error beta S 2) The analog information from the first layer S is suppressed by setting error scaling factor beta = 0 and 3) Inclusion of recursive mode with JSCC in each of the three layers for the possible better outcome is considered here.

We study the problem of communicating a discrete time analog source over a channel such that the resulting distortion is minimized. For ergodic channels, Shannon showed that separate source and channel coding is optimal. In this work we study this problem for non-ergodic channels. Although not much can be said about the general problem of transmitting any analog sources over any non-ergodic channels with any distortion metric, for many practical problems like video broadcast and voice transmission, we can gain insights by studying the transmission of a Gaussian source over a wireless channel with mean square error as the distortion measure. Motivated by different applications, we consider three different non-ergodic channel models - (1) Additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel whose signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is unknown at the transmitter; (2) Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output MIMO channel whose SNR is known at the transmitter; and (3) Rayleigh fading MIMO channel whose SNR is unknown at the transmitter. The traditional approach to study these problems has been to fix certain SNRs of interest and study the corresponding achievable distortion regions. However, the problems formulated this way have not been solved even for simple setups like 2 SNRs for the AWGN channel. We are interested in performance over a wide range of SNR and hence we use the distortion SNR exponent metric to study this problem. Distortion SNR exponent is defined as the rate of decay of distortion with SNR in the high SNR limit. We study several layered transmissions schemes where the source is first compressed in layers and then the layers are transmitted using channel codes that provide variable error protection. Results show that in several cases such layered transmission schemes are optimal in terms of the distortion SNR exponent. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have emerged as an efficient solution for numerous real-time applications, attributable to their compactness, cost-effectiveness, and ease of deployment. The rapid advancement of 5G technology and mobile edge computing (MEC) in recent years has catalyzed the transition towards large-scale deployment of WSN devices. However, the resulting data proliferation and the dynamics of communication environments introduce new challenges for WSN communication: (1) ensuring robust communication in adverse environments and (2) effectively alleviating bandwidth pressure from massive data transmission. In response to the aforementioned challenges, this paper proposes a semantic communication solution. Specifically, considering the limited computational and storage resources of WSN devices, we propose a flexible Attention-based Adaptive coding (AAC) module. This module integrates window and channel attention mechanisms, dynamically adjusts semantic information in response to the current channel state, and facilitates adaptation of a single model across various Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) environments. Furthermore, to validate the effectiveness of this approach, the paper introduces an end-to-end joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme for image semantic communication, employing the AAC module. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme surpasses existing deep JSCC schemes across datasets of varying resolutions;furthermore, they validate the efficacy of the proposed AAC module, which is capable of dynamically adjusting critical information according to the current channel state. This enables the model to be trained over a range of SNRs and obtain better results.

OFDM-Guided Deep joint source channel coding for Wireless Multipath Fading channels

We investigate joint source channel coding (JSCC) for wireless image transmission over multipath fading channels. Inspired by recent works on deep learning based JSCC and model-based learning methods, we combine an autoencoder with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to cope with multipath fading. The proposed encoder and decoder use convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and directly map the source images to complex-valued baseband samples for OFDM transmission. The multipath channel and OFDM are represented by non-trainable (deterministic) but differentiable layers so that the system can be trained end-to-end. Furthermore, our JSCC decoder further incorporates explicit channel estimation, equalization, and additional subnets to enhance the performance. The proposed method exhibits 2.5 - 4 dB SNR gain for the equivalent image quality compared to conventional schemes that employ state-of-the-art but separate source and channel coding such as Better Portable Graphics (BPG) and Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) schemes. The performance further improves when the system incorporates the channel state information (CSI) feedback. The proposed scheme is robust against OFDM signal clipping and parameter mismatch for the channel model used in training and evaluation.

Low-Latency Deep Analog Speech Transmission Using joint source channel coding

Low-latency configurable speech transmission presents significant challenges in modern communication systems. Traditional methods rely on separate source and channel coding, which often degrades performance under low-latency constraints. Moreover, non-configurable systems require separate training for each condition, limiting their adaptability in resource-constrained scenarios. This paper proposes a configurable low-latency deep joint source-channel coding (JSCC) system for speech transmission. The system can be configured for varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), wireless channel conditions, or bandwidths. A joint source-channel encoder based on deep neural networks (DNN) is used to compress and transmit analog-coded information, while a configurable decoder reconstructs speech from noisy compressed signals. The system latency is adaptable based on the input speech length, achieving a minimum latency of 2 ms, with a lightweight architecture of 25 k parameters, significantly fewer than state-of-the-art systems. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed system outperforms conventional separate source-channel coding systems in terms of speech quality and intelligibility, particularly in low-latency and noisy channel conditions. It also shows robustness in fixed configured scenarios, though higher latency conditions and better channel environments favor traditional coding systems.

A robust joint source channel coding scheme for image transmission over the ionospheric channel

In this paper, we propose a joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme to the transmission of fixed images for wireless communication applications. The ionospheric channel which presents some characteristics identical to those found on mobile radio channels, like fading, multipath and Doppler effect is our test channel. As this method based on a wavelet transform, a self-organising map (SOM) vector quantization (VQ) optimally mapped on a QAM digital modulation and an unequal error protection (UEP) strategy, this method is particularly well adapted to low bit-rate applications. The compression process consists in applying a SOM VQ on the discrete wavelet transform coefficients and computing several codebooks depending on the sub-images preserved. An UEP is achieved with a correcting code applied on the most significant data. The JSCC consists of an optimal mapping of the VQ codebook. vectors on a high spectral efficiency digital modulation. This feature allows preserving the topological organization of the codebook along the transmission chain while keeping a reduced complexity system. This method applied on grey level images can be used for colour images as well. Several tests of transmission for different images have shown the robustness of this method even for high bit error rate (BER > 10(-2)). In order to qualify the quality of the image after transmission, we use a PSNR% (peak signal-to-noise ratio) parameter which is the value of the difference of the PSNR after compression at the transmitter and after reception at the receiver. This parameter clearly shows that 95% of the PSNR is preserved when the BER is less than 10(-2). (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
