A CM2-S3 transmission link in wireless body area networks (WBAN) is implemented with a joint source channel coding (JSCC) system based on double protograph low-density parity-check (DP-LDPC) code pairs with high reliability and low power consumption. For the practicality and suitability considerations, the M-ary differential chaos shift keying scheme is introduced to modulate the CM2-S3 channel with better performance than the standard modulations in WBAN. Due to the non-Gaussian-like distribution of the CM2-S3 channel model, the initial joint protograph extrinsic information transfer (JPEXIT) algorithm does not work as a coding analysis tool. To solve this problem, a numerical Gaussian approximation is employed to modify the iterative mutual information function of the JPEXIT for achieving more precise output. Then, a joint code rate compatible (JCRC) method, designed with compatibility in resisting variable channel variances and adapting different source statistics, is proposed for optimizing the DP-LDPC code pairs. Based on the JCRC method, the code searching algorithm is simplified with lower complexity because of the reduced cycle-index. The simulation results show that optimized code pairs have better bit-error ratio performances compared to existing codes, which provides a strong technical support to promote high-quality data transmission in eHealthcare on the physical layer.

This paper presents a joint source channel coding designed for video (sequences of images) transmission application. The aim is to improve the visual quality of the reconstructed video, even when transmission errors occur, and to keep the processing as simple as possible. The BER excepted is higher than 10(-4). This coding is based on an association of a wavelet transform (WT) and a vector quantization (VQ). The whole transmission chain is jointly exploited in order to make it well-adapted to the complex and low data rate channel.

Polar codes [1] are a class of provably capacity achieving error correcting codes (ECC) for memoryless symmetric channels with low-complexity code structures;they have been shown to enjoy better decoding performance over LDPC and Turbo codes under certain scenarios. In this work, we study the application of polar codes for NAND-based SSDs, and mainly focus on the joint source channel coding (JSCC) aspect of polar codes for flash data protection In a practical SSD system, in addition to the host data, both flash translation layer (FTL) and host side will write on NAND a small amount of non-host data (a.k.a. metadata) for system managing purposes. We demonstrate that the metadata information can be readily and efficiently utilized by polar codes, whereas such property is lacking in LDPC-based systems. With the help of the side information provided by metadata, the decoding capability of polar codes can be further enhanced with little or no modifications on the decoder side. Simulation results verify the performance improvement of metadata-based JSCC scheme, and indicate that polar codes have competitive advantages over LDPC codes on flash memories.

A joint source channel coder (JSCC) for image transmission over flat fading channels is presented. By letting the transmitter have information about the channel, and by letting the code-rate vary slightly around a target code-rate, it is shown how a robust image coder is obtained by using time discrete amplitude continuous symbols generated through the use of nonlinear dimension changing mappings. Due to their robustness these mappings are well suited for the changing conditions on a fading channel.

In this paper, we address the stability problem of a noiseless linear time invariant control system over parallel Gaussian channels with feedback. It is shown that the eigenvalues-rate condition which has been proved as a necessary condition, is also sufficient for stability over parallel Gaussian channels. In fact, it is proved that for stabilizing a control system over the parallel Gaussian channels, it suffices that the Shannon channel capacity obtained by the water filling technique is greater than the sum of the logarithm of the unstable eigenvalues magnitude. In order to prove this sufficient condition, we propose a new nonlinear joint source channel coding for parallel Gaussian channels by which the initial state is transmitted through communication steps. This coding scheme with a linear control policy results in the stability of the system under the eigenvalues-rate condition. Hence, the proposed encoder, decoder and controller are efficient for this problem.

We investigate the use of discrete-time analog joint source channel coding (JSCC) in an amplify-and-forward two-hop wireless network subject to Rayleigh fading channels. The discrete-time analog source is compressed using either 2: 1, 3: 1 or 4: 1 low delay dimension-compression parametric and non-parametric analog JSCC. Our results show that both, non-parametric and parametric, analog schemes outperform an ideal fully digital system based on scalar quantization, while the performance obtained with non parametric mappings is superior to that achieved with parametric systems.

We present a deep learning based joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme for wireless image transmission over multipath fading channels with non-linear signal clipping. The proposed encoder and decoder use convolutional neural networks (CNN) and directly map the source images to complex-valued baseband samples for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. The proposed model-driven machine learning approach eliminates the need for separate source and channel coding while integrating an OFDM datapath to cope with multipath fading channels. The end-to-end JSCC communication system combines trainable CNN layers with non-trainable but differentiable layers representing the multipath channel model and OFDM signal processing blocks. Our results show that injecting domain expert knowledge by incorporating OFDM baseband processing blocks into the machine learning framework significantly enhances the overall performance compared to an unstructured CNN. Our method outperforms conventional schemes that employ state-of-the-art but separate source and channel coding such as BPG and LDPC with OFDM. Moreover, our method is shown to be robust against non-linear signal clipping in OFDM for various channel conditions that do not match the model parameter used during the training.

A joint source channel coding method based on the sensing compression is *** method making a combination of the double unequal error protection and dynamic rate allocation mechanism,conducts ranging compression with CS and results a progressive flow of infoemation according to the importance of each frequency sub-band after wavelet *** flow has become into binary codes by Huffman entropy ***,the rate is distributed by the progressive bit stream *** the channel resources are limited,the channel resource allocation can be optimized to achieve good end-to-end communication *** simulation of the binary image and the standard gray scale image *** example,the standard grayscale image lena,when the SNR is 4d B,the image reconstruction MSE is 0.0616 with good reconstruction ***,the system obtains the compression ratio up to 4:1,reducing the system energy consumption and increasing the transmission efficiency greatly.

Recently, deep joint source channel coding (DJSCC) techniques have been extensively studied and have shown significant performance with limited bandwidth and low signal to noise ratio. Most DJSCC work considers discrete-time analog transmission, while combining it with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) creates serious high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis on the use of various OFDM PAPR reduction techniques in the DJSCC system, including both conventional techniques such as clipping, companding, SLM and PTS, and deep learning-based PAPR reduction techniques such as PAPR loss and clipping with retraining. Our investigation shows that although conventional PAPR reduction techniques can be applied to DJSCC, their performance in DJSCC is different from the conventional split source channel coding. Moreover, we observe that for signal distortion PAPR reduction techniques, clipping with retraining achieves the best performance in terms of both PAPR reduction and recovery accuracy. It is also noticed that signal non-distortion PAPR reduction techniques can successfully reduce the PAPR in DJSCC without compromise to signal reconstruction. © 2023 IEEE.
