A joint source and channel coding algorithm for error-resilient SPIHT-coded video bitstreams

We propose an analytical rate-distortion optimized joint source and channel coding algorithm for error-resilient scalable encoded video for lossy transmission. A video is encoded into multiple independent substreams to avoid error propagation and is assigned forward error correction (FEC) codes and source bits using Lagrange optimization. Our method separates video coding and packetization into different tiers which can be easily incorporated into any coding structure that generates a set of independent compressed bit-streams. To demonstrate the performance, we use the 2-state Markov model to describe the burst loss channel and Reed-Solomon codes as forward error correction codes. Simulation results show that the proposed channel incorporated rate-distortion optimization approach have better performance. (C) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We investigate the use of discrete-time analog joint source channel coding (JSCC) in an amplify-and-forward two-hop wireless network subject to Rayleigh fading channels. The discrete-time analog source is compressed using either 2:1, 3:1 or 4:1 low delay dimension-compression parametric and non-parametric analog JSCC. Our results show that both, non-parametric and parametric, analog schemes outperform an ideal fully digital system based on scalar quantization, while the performance obtained with non parametric mappings is superior to that achieved with parametric systems.

We investigate the interaction of congestion control with the partitioning of source information into components of varying importance for variable bit-rate packet voice and packet video. High-priority transport for the more important signal components results in substantially increased objective service quality. Using a Markov chain voice source model with simple PCM speech encoding and a priority queue, simulation results show a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of 45 dB with two priorities over an unprioritized system. Performance is sensitive to the fraction of traffic placed in each priority, and the optimal partition depends on network loss conditions. When this partition is optimized dynamically, quality degrades gracefully over a wide range of load values. Results with DCT encoded speech and video samples show similar behavior. Variations are investigated such as further partition of low-priority information into multiple priorities. A simulation with delay added to represent other network nodes shows general insensitivity to delay of network feedback information. A comparison is made between dropping packets on buffer overflow and timeout based on service requirements.

This paper presents a joint source channel coding designed for video (sequences of images) transmission application. The aim is to improve the visual quality of the reconstructed video, even when transmission errors occur, and to keep the processing as simple as possible. The BER excepted is higher than 10-4. This coding is based on an association of a wavelet transform (WT) and a vector quantization (VQ). The whole transmission chain is jointly exploited in order to make it well-adapted to the complex and low data rate channel.

Motivated to develop a scheme that compresses, gives high throughput and adds robustness against channel noise, a new joint source channel network coding (JSCNC) using Quasi Cyclic Low Density Parity Check (QCLDPC) code is proposed for a sensor network with two source nodes communicating correlated information to multiple destination nodes. The source coding is performed by transmitting only half of the information bits of QCLDPC code and transmitting the parity bits as such, since the parity bits are usually uncorrelated compared to the corresponding information bits. The correlations in sensor network data are used effectively at the relay node to reconstruct the original information bits transmitted by the source nodes. Relay scheme used in our proposed work is a decode and forward relaying in which masking of information bits are done before network coding at the relay. This helps in low-error decoding at the destination.

This paper considers the zero-delay transmission of a Gaussian source over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with a one-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) front end. The optimization of the encoder and decoder is tackled under both the mean squared error (MSE) distortion and the outage distortion criteria with an average power constraint. For MSE distortion, the optimal transceiver is identified over the space of symmetric encoders. This result demonstrates that the linear encoder, which is optimal with a full-precision front end, approaches optimality only in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime;while, digital transmission is optimal in the high SNR regime. For the outage distortion criterion, the structure of the optimal encoder and decoder are obtained. In particular, it is shown that the encoder mapping is piecewise constant and can take only two opposite values when it is non-zero.

In this paper, we propose a joint design of serially concatenated source channel coding for binary Markov sources over AWGN channels. To exploit the memory structure inherent within the sequence output from the source, modifications are made on the BCJR algorithm. To decode the outer code, the modified version of the BCJR algorithm is used, while the inner code by the standard version of the algorithm. Since optimal design of serially concatenated convolutional code falls into the problem of curve matching between the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) curves of the inner and outer codes, we first evaluate the EXIT curve of the outer code decoded by the modified BCJR algorithm. It is then shown that the EXIT curve obtained by the modified BCJR algorithm is better matched with short memory inner convolutional code, which significantly reduces coding/decoding complexity. Numerical results demonstrate significant gains over the systems in which source statistics are not exploited (i.e., the standard BCJR algorithm is used for the both codes), and thereby narrowing the performance gap to the Shannon limit. We also compare in this paper the performance of the proposed design with the algorithm presented in In designed also for transmission of binary Markov source using parallel concatenated convolutional code (the authors of Ref. Ill refer the technique as joint source channel Turbo Code (JSCTC)). It is shown that our proposed system is superior in both system complexity and BER performance to the JSCTC technique presented in [1].

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a programmable metasurface composed of sub-wavelength meta-atoms and a controller. Recent research works have shown that multi-layer RISs can form over-the-air neural networks. This enables support for a variety of tasks, including image recognition, mobile communication coding-decoding, and real-time multi-beam focusing. In this work, we present a RISs-based over-the-air joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme, named as AirJSCC, where multi-layer RISs are used to realize wave-based complex-valued neural networks (CVNNs). AirJSCC transforms the computation process inherited in JSCC into the transmission of wireless signals through RISs, and thus many benefits, such as light-speed computation and high parallel processing capability, can be achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first deep JSCC scheme that incorporates RISs and CVNNs. Simulation results demonstrate that AirJSCC achieves better image reconstruction performance compared with the baseline scheme, even under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and limited bandwidth, and exhibits robustness against varying channel conditions.

Zero-delay transmission of a Gaussian source over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) front end is investigated in the presence of correlated side information at the receiver. The design of the optimal encoder is considered for the mean squared error (MSE) distortion criterion under an average power constraint on the channel input. A necessary condition for the optimality of the encoder is derived. A numerically optimized encoder (NOE) is then obtained that aims that enforcing the necessary condition. It is observed that, due to the availability of receiver side information, the optimal encoder mapping is periodic, with its period depending on the correlation coefficient between the source and the side information. We then propose two parameterized encoder mappings, referred to as periodic linear transmission (PLT) and periodic BPSK transmission (PBT), which trade-off optimality for reduced complexity as compared to the NOE solution. We observe via numerical results that PBT performs close to the NOE in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, while PLT approaches the NOE performance in the low SNR regime.

Certain sensing applications such as Internet of Things (IoTs), where the sensing phenomenon may change rapidly in both time and space, requires sensors that consume ultra-low power (so that they do not need to be put to sleep leading to loss of temporal and spatial resolution) and have low costs (for high density deployment). A novel encoding based on Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) is proposed to realize Analog joint source channel coding (AJSCC), a low-complexity technique to compress two (or more) signals into one with controlled distortion. In AJSCC, the y-axis is quantized while the x-axis is continuously captured. A power-efficient design to support multiple quantization levels is presented so that the digital receiver can decide the optimum quantization and the analog transmitter circuit is able to realize that. The approach is verified via Spice and MATLAB simulations.
