Binary Signaling of Correlated sources Over Orthogonal Multiple-Access channels

The optimal energy allocations for minimizing the joint symbol error rate for binary signaling of two correlated sources over the orthogonal multiple-access Gaussian channel under joint maximum a priori (MAP) detection are determined. An exact expression for the system's probability of joint symbol error, as well as its union bound, is derived. Analytic minimization of the union bound reveals that the optimal energy allocation coincides with that of nonuniform binary signaling over the single-user additive white Gaussian noise channel. It is also shown numerically that the optimal energies that minimize the union bound also minimize the exact probability of error. Finally, it is shown via simulations for strongly biased sources that the use of joint MAP detection over two independent single-user systems leads to significant gains.

Application Layer Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) is becoming a popular addition to protocols for real-time video delivery over IP-based wireless networks. In particular, rateless codes are identified as suitable solution for AL-FEC due to their flexibility and capacity-approaching performance. Since each part of video data is not equally important for video reconstruction, it is beneficial to group it based on its importance, and then provide different degree of protection using Unequal Error Protection (UEP). Data partitioning (DP) is one such low-cost feature in H.264/AVC enabling partitioning of video data based on its importance. We propose schemes for the DP H.264/AVC video transmission using Raptor and Random Linear Codes (RLC) and investigate their performance as AL-FEC solutions in Digital Video Broadcasting. We provide comparisons between optimized Non-Overlapping Window RLC and Expanding Window (EW) RLC, which are two effective UEP RLC strategies. The results using realistic channel traces show viability of the EW RLC as a promising solution for multimedia broadcast applications.

We investigate the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) excess distortion exponent E-J (the exponent of the probability of exceeding a prescribed distortion level) for some memoryless communication systems with continuous alphabets. We first establish upper and lower bounds for E-J for systems consisting of a memoryless Gaussian source under the squared-error distortion fidelity criterion and a memoryless additive Gaussian noise channel with a quadratic power constraint at the channel input. A necessary and sufficient condition for which the two bounds coincide is provided, thus exactly determining the exponent. This condition is observed to hold for a wide range of source-channel parameters. As an application, we study the advantage in terms of the excess distortion exponent of JSCC over traditional tandem (separate) coding for Gaussian systems. A formula for the tandem exponent is derived in terms of the Gaussian source and Gaussian channel exponents, and numerical results show that JSCC often substantially outperforms tandem coding. The problem of transmitting memoryless Laplacian sources over the Gaussian channel under the magnitude-error distortion is also carried out. Finally, we establish a lower bound for E-J for a certain class of continuous source-channel pairs when the distortion measure is a metric.

In multi-terminal networks, feedback increases the capacity region and helps communication devices to coordinate. In this article, we deepen the relationship between coordination and feedback by considering a point-to-point scenario with an information source and a noisy channel. Empirical coordination is achievable if the encoder and the decoder can implement sequences of symbols that are jointly typical for a target probability distribution. We investigate the impact of feedback when the encoder has strictly causal or causal observation of the source symbols. For both cases, we characterize the optimal information constraints and we show that feedback improves coordination possibilities. Surprisingly, feedback also reduces the number of auxiliary random variables and simplifies the information constraints. For empirical coordination with strictly causal encoding and feedback, the information constraint does not involve auxiliary random variable anymore.

We consider a set of S independent encoders that must transmit a set of correlated sources through a network of noisy, independent, broadcast channels to T receivers, with no interference at the receivers. For the general problem of sending correlated sources through broadcast networks, it is known that the source-channel separation theorem breaks down and the achievable rate region as well as the proper method of coding are unknown. For our scenario, however, we establish the optimal rate region using a form of joint source-channel coding. When the optimal channel input distribution from transmitter i to receiver j is independent of j, our result has a max-flow/min-cut interpretation. Specifically, in this case, our result implies that if it is possible to send the sources to each receiver separately while ignoring the others, then it is possible to send to all receivers simultaneously.

We investigate the minimum transmitted energy required to reproduce k source samples with a given fidelity after transmission over a memoryless Gaussian channel. In particular, we analyze the reduction in transmitted energy that accrues thanks to the availability of noiseless feedback. Allowing a nonvanishing excess distortion probability epsilon boosts the asymptotic fundamental limit by a factor of 1 - epsilon, with or without feedback. If feedback is available, achieving guaranteed distortion with finite average energy is possible.

The coordination of autonomous agents is a critical issue for decentralized communication networks. Instead of transmitting information, the agents interact in a coordinated manner in order to optimize a general objective function. A target joint probability distribution is achievable if there exists a code such that the sequences of symbols are jointly typical. The empirical coordination is strongly related to the joint source-channel coding with two-sided state information and correlated source and state. This problem is also connected to state communication and is open for non-causal encoder and decoder. We characterize the optimal solutions for perfect channel, for lossless decoding, for independent source and channel, for causal encoding and for causal decoding.

We consider analog multiple description joint source-channel schemes for the transmission of a Gaussian source over two independent AWGN parallel channels under a quadratic error distortion criteria. For such systems, Lines mapping was proved to be a simple and efficient mapping when MMSE decoding is used. However, MMSE decoding presents a high computational load. In order to reduce complexity of such schemes, this paper studies the suitability of replacing the MMSE decoders by the much simpler ML decoders. The scenario where the ML decoders have some additional side information (Wyner-Ziv scenario) is also analyzed. Their performances are compared with the corresponding theoretical bound and with the obtained simulation results of their MMSE counterparts.

We address distributed source coding with decoder side information, when the decoder observes the source through a noisy channel. Existing approaches employ syndrome- or parity-based channel codes. We propose a new approach based on distributed arithmetic coding (DAC). We introduce a DAC with forbidden symbol, which allows to tune the redundancy according to the amount of channel noise. We propose a novel sequential decoder that employs the known side information to decode the corrupted codeword. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is better than parity-based turbo codes at relatively short block lengths.

TTCM-Aided Rate-Adaptive Distributed source coding for Rayleigh Fading channels

Adaptive turbo-trellis-coded modulation (TTCM)-aided asymmetric distributed source coding (DSC) is proposed, where two correlated sources are transmitted to a destination node. The first source sequence is TTCM encoded and is further compressed before it is transmitted through a Rayleigh fading channel, whereas the second source signal is assumed to be perfectly decoded and, hence, to be flawlessly shown at the destination for exploitation as side information for improving the decoding performance of the first source. The proposed scheme is capable of reliable communications within 0.80 dB of the Slepian-Wolf/Shannon (SW/S) theoretical limit at a bit error rate (BER) of 10(-5). Furthermore, its encoder is capable of accommodating time-variant short-term correlation between the two sources.
