In this paper, a joint source channel coding scheme for error resilient image transmission is proposed. Instead of compressing the image using the classical entropy coder, the redundancy of the image is exploited by using turbo codes for both data compression and error protection. At the decoder, the bit-planes are reconstructed in sequence by a multistage decoder. By properly choosing rate and puncturing, the system is able to approach the limit theoretically attainable and to outperform the separated approach of a JPEG2000 compressed image and the best turbo codes for the same overall length.

FGS (Fine Granularity Scalability) is a scalable coding technique which can provide flexibility and good performance for Internet video streaming. However. FGS is not suitable for wireless video streaming. This is mainly because the low coding efficiency of FGS does not fit the limited bandwidth of wireless networks. In this paper, we jointly consider mode selection and UEP (unequal error protection) for FGS video transmission over wireless channels. In particular, we provide two modes for encoding the FGS enhancement layer of each video frame, i.e., with prediction or without prediction. The mode selection depends on the capability of UEP while the solution for UEP depends on the vulnerability of source data. We construct an overall end-to-end rate-distortion (R-D) function. Based on this end-to-end R-D function, we are able to find the optimal solutions for both mode selection and UEP so that an optimal tradeoff between efficiency and robustness can be achieved. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed system is able to significantly improve the end-to-end video quality for wireless FGS video coding, and transmission.

We propose a joint feature compression and transmission scheme for efficient inference at the wireless network edge. Our goal is to enable efficient and reliable inference at the edge server assuming limited computational resources at the edge device. Previous work focused mainly on feature compression, ignoring the computational cost of channel coding. We incorporate the recently proposed deep joint source-channel coding (DeepJSCC) scheme, and combine it with novel filter pruning strategies aimed at reducing the redundant complexity from neural networks. We evaluate our approach on a classification task, and show improved results in both end-to-end reliability and workload reduction at the edge device. This is the first work that combines DeepJSCC with network pruning, and applies it to image classification over the wireless edge.

Fine-Granularity-Scalability (FGS) has recently been adopted as the MPEG-4 standard for the efficient and flexible distribution of multimedia over the Internet. The FGS framework allows spatio-temporal-SNR tradeoffs in real-time (not limited to encoding time) at transmission or (post-) processing time, depending upon the available bit-rate, sequence characteristics, priority, user preferences or receiver resources. This paper discusses the versatility of FGS and how it can be used to great advantage in a variety of application domains beyond Internet video streaming, such as robust wireless video transmission and flexible scalable storage. In particular, the focus is on investigating the use of FGS for enabling the Universal Media Access (UMA) paradigm for wireless networks. To cope with detrimental channel conditions, we use several joint source-channel coding schemes for wireless transmission, termed Robust FGS (RFGS). RFGS exploits the FGS property of compressing video data in a set of multi-priority streams, based on the channel characteristics and terminal capabilities, by adapting the channel coding. Our results show that RFGS can provide graceful adaptability to varying network conditions while also offering additional benefits such as flexible Quality-of Service (QoS) management and channel adaptation and allocation. Moreover, the use of FGS for scalable storage of video content in gateways and in-home centralized storage units is also investigated. The results show that the proposed scalable method allows storing ten times or more video data on the same storage device depending on the desired guaranteed minimum quality level.

With the increasing occurrence of wildfires globally, quick and effective detection methods are vital. This paper proposes an innovative solution for wildfire detection using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-assisted detection systems. On the other hand, semantic communication, a technology designed for efficient data transmission in specialized tasks, plays a crucial role in next-generation wireless communications systems. In this paper, the deep joint source-channel coding (DJSCC) scheme has been used for efficient image transmission as a deep learning-based semantic communication technique for wildfire detection. DJSCC improves source and channel coding for semantic communications, offering advantages such as improved energy efficiency, reduced latency, and improved reliability compared to traditional source and channel code schemes. In this paper, the transmitter-receiver operations of the UAV communication system are modeled as a DJSCC, and they are jointly trained while taking into account the effects of the fading channel. The encoder transforms captured images into compact feature vectors, subsequently transmitting them using a reduced number of channels to minimize latency. Rather than engaging in the reconstruction of the input image in the receiver, the classifier performs a classification task using the received signals at the receiver. Alternatively, if the recovery of an image is required to understand the spread of the wildfire, the decoder reconstructs it by using the received signal at the receiver.

We consider the Gaussian multiple-access interference relay channel (MAIRC), where a relay aids the communication of two two-user multiple-access channels that transmit over a shared medium and thus interfere mutually. We study the problem of transmitting four correlated memoryless sources, one each for the four transmitters, over the phase incoherent MAIRCs (PI-MAIRC) where transmissions are subject to fixed non-ergodic phase shifts that change across blocks. For a class of PI-MAIRCs where the phase-shifts are assumed to be unknown at the transmitters and known at the receivers, necessary and sufficient channel conditions are derived under which separate source and channel coding proves optimal. We then extend this result to (i) the N-user PI-MAIRC as well as (ii) MAIRCs with general ergodic phase fading.

In this paper, we study low-latency speech transmission over a wireless channel based on deep digital joint source-channel coding (JSCC). Inspired by recent advances in quantization techniques in the realm of JSSC problems, we explore the feasibility of employing constellation-constrained deep JSCC for speech transmission. Our proposed system leverages a single DNN to jointly handle source coding, channel coding, and direct output mapping to specific constellation points. We demonstrate the ability of the joint system to operate effectively under various latency constraints while outperforming separate systems, especially in adverse channel conditions. Simulation results validate the efficacy of our approach, highlighting its potential for real-world applications requiring low-latency speech transmission over wireless channels.

The three-node relay channel with a Gaussian source is studied for transmission subject to a low-delay constraint. A joint source-channel coding design algorithm is proposed and numerically evaluated. The designed system is compared to a reference system, based on modular source and channel coding, and the distortion-rate function for the Gaussian source, using known achievable rates on the relay channel. The structure of the source encoder and the relay mapping is visualized and discussed in order to gain understanding of how the system works. The relay mapping gets a structure that resembles a Wyner-Ziv code.

Semantic communication systems have been proposed for efficient text transmissions in recent years. However, most existing methods mainly focus on word-level recovery, which fails to reflect the semantic fidelity of the model. By leveraging the sentence-level semantic information, a semantic communication system architecture is proposed within the framework of deep learning based joint source-channel coding. Then, in order to evaluate the semantic fidelity of the system, a new metric of Semantic Similarity is proposed, which is more sensitive to semantic differences as compared to existing evaluation metrics, e.g., bilingual evaluation understudy. For guaranteeing the consistency between model training and performance evaluation, the proposed new metric is then incorporated into the objective function, based on which end-to-end performance optimization is performed. Extensive simulation results on European Parliament dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and necessity of the proposed method. Compared with the state-of-the-art, e.g., DeepSC, an improvement of up to 10% is achieved in terms of Semantic Similarity. Furthermore, significant performance gains are achieved by the proposed method in both regimes of low and medium signal-to-noise ratio, as compared to traditional separate source-channel coding methods.

The purpose of our work is to report a solution for the problem of the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) of the H.263 bit stream to be transmitted through error prone channels. Our investigations led us to classify the H.263 syntactical elements into several classes of different significance. By identifying the most sensitive elements we developed a data partitioning (DP) technique which exhibits improved error resilience. A good reconstructed video quality is obtained for a constant 64 kbit/s transmission rate using Rate Compatible Punctured Convolutional (RCPC) codes of different rates for forward error protection. By exploiting the different syntactical element sensitivities we presented an Unequal Error Protection (UEP) scheme that surpasses the optimal Equal Error Protection (EEP). The forward error correction adopted has resulted in PSNR improvements over 20 dB for bit error rates higher than of 4x10(-3).
