Zero-Delay joint source-channel coding Using Hybrid Digital-Analog Schemes in the Wyner-Ziv Setting

This paper studies zero-delay joint source-channel coding (JSCC) of Gaussian sources over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels in the Wyner-Ziv scenario, that is, when there is side information about the source available only to the receiver. The proposed encoding scheme is based on hybrid digital-analog (HDA) transmission in a zero-delay fashion. Specifically, to achieve zero-delay, after applying scalar quantization to the source, the properly scaled analog information (quantization error) is superimposed on the scaled digital information (quantized source), and then transmitted. At the receiver side, several reconstruction schemes are analyzed. It is shown that all the schemes, when optimized, are superior to existing uncoded, digital, or hybrid transmission methods. It is also shown that the proposed HDA transmission may result in increased robustness to channel and/or side information mismatch compared to uncoded transmission. Observing that the bandwidth-matched Wyner-Ziv problem is intimately related to the coding scenario without side information but with bandwidth expansion factor 2, the proposed scheme is applied to the latter problem. It is shown that this application results in a better performance than the well-known inverse spiral mapping.

This paper investigates mobile video delivery in a heterogeneous wireless network from a video server to a multi-homed client. joint source-channel coding (JSCC) has proven to be an effective solution for video transmission over bandwidth-limited, error-prone wireless networks. However, one major problem with the existing JSCC approaches is that they consider the network between the server and the client as a single transport link. The situation becomes more complicated in the context of multiple available links because involving a low-bandwidth, highly lossy, or long-delay wireless network in the transmission will only degrade the video quality. To address the critical problem, we propose a novel flow rate allocation-based JSCC (FRA-JSCC) approach that includes three key phases: (1) forward error correction redundancy estimation under loss requirement, (2) source rate adaption under delay constraint, and (3) dynamic rate allocation to minimize end-to-end video distortion. We present a mathematical formulation of JSCC to optimize video quality over multiple wireless channels and provide comprehensive analysis for channel distortion. We evaluate the performance of FRA-JSCC through emulations in Exata and compare it with the existing schemes. Experimental results show that FRA-JSCC outperforms the competing models in improving the video peak signal-to-noise ratio as well as in reducing the end-to-end delay.

We present the second part of our work on communicating correlated sources over multiple access (MAC) and interference channels (IC). Specifically, we undertake a Shannon-theoretic study of the above scenarios and focus on characterizing sufficient conditions for lossless recoverability of the sources at the decoder(s). We enhance the fixed block-length (B-L) coding technique by incorporating the technique of inducing source correlation onto channel inputs, originally discovered by Cover, El Gamal and Salehi. In contrast to the first part, performance analysis of a joint source-channel decoder poses new challenges. We enhance the earlier developed suite of coding and analytical tools to overcome these challenges and derive (simplified) single-letter characterizations for a new set of sufficient conditions for both scenarios. For both the MAC and IC problems, the derived sufficient conditions are (i) subsumed in the current known tightest, and (ii) strictly weaker for identified examples. Lastly, we propose simple 'plug-in' approaches that can further weaken the derived sufficient conditions. Our findings enable us to subsume Dueck's findings (1981) and go even further for the example considered therein.

Zero-Delay joint source-channel coding in the Presence of Interference Known at the Encoder

Zero-delay transmission of a Gaussian source over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered in the presence of an independent additive Gaussian interference signal. The mean squared error (MSE) distortion is minimized under an average power constraint assuming that the interference signal is known at the transmitter. Optimality of simple linear transmission does not hold in this setting due to the presence of the known interference signal. While the optimal encoder-decoder pair remains an open problem, various non-linear transmission schemes are proposed in this paper. In particular, interference concentration (ICO) and one-dimensional lattice (1DL) strategies, using both uniform and non-uniform quantization of the interference signal, are studied. It is shown that, in contrast to typical scalar quantization of Gaussian sources, a non-uniform quantizer, whose quantization intervals become smaller as we go further from zero, improves the performance. Given that the optimal decoder is the minimum MSE (MMSE) estimator, a necessary condition for the optimality of the encoder is derived, and the numerically optimized encoder (NOE) satisfying this condition is obtained. Based on the numerical results, it is shown that 1DL with non-uniform quantization performs closer (compared with the other schemes) to the NOE while requiring significantly lower complexity.

Error Exponents for joint source-channel coding With Side Information

In this paper, we study upper and lower bounds on the error exponents for joint source-channel coding with decoder side-information. The results in the paper are nontrivial extensions of Csiszar's classical paper "joint source-channel Error Exponent", Problems of Control and Information Theory, 1980. Unlike the joint source-channel coding result in Csiszar's paper, it is not obvious whether the lower bound and the upper bound are equivalent even if the channel coding error exponent is known. For a class of channels, including symmetric channels, we apply a game-theoretic result to establish the existence of a saddle point and, hence, prove that the lower and upper bounds are the same if the channel coding error exponent is known. More interestingly, we show that encoder side-information does not increase the error exponents in this case.

Combined hidden Markov source estimation and low-density parity-check coding: a novel joint source-channel coding scheme for multimedia communications

joint source-channel coding schemes have been proven to be very effective for reliable multimedia communications. In this paper, we develop a joint source-channel coding scheme that combines the hidden Markov source (HMS) estimation and the low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with an iterative estimation/decoding scheme. With this innovative combination, multimedia source redundancy Could be accurately extracted by the hidden Markov estimation without any a priori information about the source. Moreover, the interleaver that is usually used to separate the source coding and channel coding can be avoided by exploiting the randomizing property of the LDPC codes. Furthermore, the channel decoding procedure may be implemented in parallel, resulting in good performance with a fairly low decoding complexity and delay. Simulation results have shown that the proposed scheme can achieve much better performance than the standard coding scheme over the binary input additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channels. On joint source-channel coding for the Wyner-Ziv source and the Gel'fand-Pinsker channel

We consider the problem of lossy joint source-channel coding in a communication system where the encoder has access to channel state information (CSI) and the decoder has access to side information that is correlated to the source. This configuration combines the Wyner-Ziv model of pure lossy source coding with side information at the decoder and the Shannon/Gel'fand-Pinsker model of pure channel coding with CSI at the encoder. We prove a separation theorem for this communication system, which asserts that there is no loss in asymptotic optimality in applying, first, an optimal Wyner-Ziv source code and, then, an optimal Gel'fand-Pinsker channel code. We then derive conditions for the optimality of a symbol-by-symbol (scalar) source-channel code, and demonstrate situations where these conditions are met. Finally, we discuss a few practical applications, including overlaid communication where the model under discussion is useful.

Generative joint source-channel coding for Semantic Image Transmission

Recent works have shown that joint source-channel coding (JSCC) schemes using deep neural networks (DNNs), called DeepJSCC, provide promising results in wireless image transmission. However, these methods mostly focus on the distortion of the reconstructed signals with respect to the input image, rather than their perception by humans. However, focusing on traditional distortion metrics alone does not necessarily result in high perceptual quality, especially in extreme physical conditions, such as very low bandwidth compression ratio (BCR) and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. In this work, we propose two novel JSCC schemes that leverage the perceptual quality of deep generative models (DGMs) for wireless image transmission, namely InverseJSCC and GenerativeJSCC. While the former is an inverse problem approach to DeepJSCC, the latter is an end-to-end optimized JSCC scheme. In both, we optimize a weighted sum of mean squared error (MSE) and learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS) losses, which capture more semantic similarities than other distortion metrics. InverseJSCC performs denoising on the distorted reconstructions of a DeepJSCC model by solving an inverse optimization problem using the pre-trained style-based generative adversarial network (StyleGAN). Our simulation results show that InverseJSCC significantly improves the state-of-the-art DeepJSCC in terms of perceptual quality in edge cases. In GenerativeJSCC, we carry out end-to-end training of an encoder and a StyleGAN-based decoder, and show that GenerativeJSCC significantly outperforms DeepJSCC both in terms of distortion and perceptual quality.

On hierarchical joint source-channel coding with degraded side information

We extend the setting of two-stage lossy source coding with successive refinement structures into a joint source-channel coding setting. In particular, we consider a problem where two descriptions of a memoryless source are to be transmitted across two independent memoryless channels and where the output of the channel corresponding to the first (coarse) description is also available to the decoder of the second (refinement) decoder. Side information (SI), correlated to the source, may also be available to the decoders. In such a case, we confine attention to degraded SI, in the sense that the source, the SI available at the refinement decoder, and the SI available at the coarse decoder form a Markov chain in this order. Our first result is a separation theorem asserting that in the limit of long blocks, no optimality is lost by first applying lossy successive-refinement source coding, regardless of the channels, and then applying good channel codes to each one of the resulting bitstreams, regardless of the source and the SI. It is also shown that (even noiseless) feedback from the output of the first channel to the input of the second encoder cannot improve performance, but may sometimes significantly facilitate the implementation of optimum codes. We provide two examples where single-letter codes (of unit block length) achieve optimum performance, if feedback from the channel output of the first stage is provided to the encoder of the refinement stage. In one of these examples, it is evident that if feedback is not provided, optimality cannot be achieved with unit length code. Motivated by these examples, we then investigate single-letter codes for this system. Necessary and sufficient conditions are furnished for the optimality of single-letter codes with and without feedback. A corollary of these conditions is that for the quadratic distortion measure, feedback is necessary to achieve optimality in single-letter codes, regardless of the source distribution and t
