Artificial Intelligence (AI) and knowledge-based engineering (KBE) in Ship Design: Bridging Tradition and Technology Through ACQUAINT

Despite the limited use of artificial intelligence/knowledge-based engineering (AI/KBE) in industries with small series or one-off designs, our study demonstrates the technical feasibility and potential benefits of implementing AI/KBE in ship design processes. This research presents the development of "ACQUAINT," uniquely designed to address the complexities inherent in bespoke shipbuilding. Central to this module is a robust AI-driven inference engine, integrated seamlessly with AutoCAD through a Python-based interface, facilitating a novel approach in shipbuilding's detail and production design phases. The module's capability to generate optimal designs autonomously-grounded in a deep understanding of design rules, constraints, and requirements-substantially reduces the reliance on human interaction. Our initial proof of concept with "ACQUAINT" showcases measurable advancements in ship design accuracy and efficiency, highlighting AI KBE's transformative impact in shipbuilding and setting a foundation for future research and practical applications.

This article presents a knowledge-based engineering application method for the optimization design of containership lashing bridge. To reduce the structural vibration response of lashing bridges, a structural improvement method was proposed based on the results of optimization. The adoption of design specifications, expertise and other knowledge accumulated in design have been ignored in the development of structure design and optimization. To face the increasingly fierce competition in the marine market, the optimal solution is establishing a knowledge base containing expertise, design specification and successful design cases. In addition, the advanced techniques for design and optimization shall be incorporated with knowledge-based engineering to automate new designs and optimizations. Furthermore, finite element method is employed to carry out the strength analysis. Lightweight design and vibration damping design of the lashing bridge are deemed as two critical issues having nagged designers. The knowledge-based engineering-based design and optimization approach not only ensure the performance of the lashing bridge structure to be reasonable but also minimize the weight target and evidently improves the design quality and efficiency. The functionally graded thickness structure is applied to the improved scheme, which not only makes the design of the lashing bridge structure more reasonable but also reduces the vibration response of the structure.

Due to the growing number of requirements and the introduction of new technologies, current trends indicate that more disciplines have been involved into the system design. The design of such multidisciplinary systems, especially during the detailed design phase, requires designers and expertise from different disciplines. Therefore, the research question about how to achieve an integrated design for multidisciplinary systems has attracted the attention from both academia and industry. In order to achieve such integrated design for multidisciplinary systems, more and more researchers focus on the interface of multidisciplinary systems because the interface plays a quite significant role to guarantee the components defined by the designers of different disciplines integrate correctly and to eventually help them to achieve the integrated design. This article presents an interface knowledge base to manage the design data and rules related to the interfaces. A knowledge-based engineering approach is then proposed. By applying the knowledge-based engineering approach, a synergistic integration of the discipline-specific components can be realised;however, the unnecessary iterations can be avoided so that a concurrent design process during the detailed design phase can be achieved. This knowledge-based engineering approach is demonstrated by the case studies based on a partial discharge detection system and a belt conveyor system.

Robotic manufacturing systems have proven to be an effective solution for modern manufacturing enterprises to deal with increasing in customer demands and market competition. However, these systems may be unable to completely satisfy user requirements because of the difference between user and design perspectives. Thus, designing robotic manufacturing systems requires iterative processes that significantly increase development costs and lead time. A user-customised design approach is needed that enables users to customise robotic manufacturing systems as well as alleviate the burden on designers of eliciting user requirements. However, most users may not be able to customise their systems because of a lack of engineering knowledge. The authors propose a knowledge-based engineering approach to aid users in customising the architectures of robotic manufacturing systems. Two models - an ontological knowledge model and a multi-attribute decision-making model - are defined and integrated in the proposed KBE architecture definition method. A rule-based reasoning process is proposed in the ontological knowledge model based on explicit semantic descriptions of users' unstructured or semi-structured requirements and the components of robotic manufacturing systems, which infers the possible architecture of the required system. The MADM model is adopted to evaluate the architecture alternatives to determine the optimal solution.

This paper discusses structure and functionalities of a knowledge-based engineering (KBE) application, called multimodel generator (MMG), developed to support aircraft multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization. Designers can use the MMG as an advanced modelling tool to swiftly generate geometrical models of many and diverse aircraft configurations and variants, by combining and adjusting a limited number of parametric objects, called high-level primitives. Besides capturing the geometric aspects of the design, the MMG also has the capabilities to automate a large part of the lengthy and non-creative pre-processing activities involved in the design verification process. The proposed KBE application has demonstrated to be a valuable solution for some of the critical needs indicated by the multidisciplinary design and optimization community, namely a flexible and robust generative tool to increase the level of automation in aircraft design, including the development of novel configurations;the exploitation of high-fidelity analytical tools already in the early design phase;the management of the design activities across distributed networks of disciplines specialists.

The use of prefabricated facades provides a timely means to increase efficiency in the delivery of buildings, while maximising the expected environmental service performance. In order to achieve high performance and low cost, these products require manufacturability and supply chain knowledge to be integrated earlier than usual in the design process. knowledge-based engineering (KBE) applications can potentially fulfil this need by providing a digital Product Model that informs designers about manufacturability aspects and expected performance. This paper explores the currently available digital tools, as well as KBE and its applicability in facade design. It is first demonstrated that there is a fundamental gap in state-of-the-art digital tools: rather than integrating design principles and manufacturing constraints, existing and emerging tools continue to focus on single disciplines with no consideration for the actual manufacturing stage. The applicability of KBE is then evaluated by reviewing the current use of this approach in the building and other industries, namely, aerospace and shipbuilding. It is found that, although KBE is rarely used in facade design, there are significant opportunities for it to be applied in this sector, due to the similarity in terms of design tasks and priorities with the two other industries reviewed in this paper.

The current design of infrastructure facilities is mainly driven by the application of guidelines, codes and international standards. The complex interpretation and geometric representation of those rules impedes the dynamic search for alternative solutions. Parallel to this, in recent years there has been an increasing tendency toward the adoption of 3D modeling solutions. Of particular benefit in the design of infrastructure facilities is the use of parametric modeling systems since they allow the definition of flexible models that can easily be adapted to satisfy changes in the boundary conditions. By defining dependencies and constraints, engineers are able to capture the underlying engineering knowledge in the parametric model. However, the design knowledge that can be defined by those instruments is limited to a reduced number of constraints and simple algebraic relations among parameters that are clearly insufficient to describe the complexity of engineering rules. To close this technological gap, this paper presents a novel knowledge-based engineering (KBE) approach that captures the design knowledge engineers apply in the interpretation and generation of infrastructure models based on rules specific for infrastructure facilities. To achieve this, distinct knowledge units named logic models capture the generation knowledge needed to convert the abstract information engineers must deal with into a corresponding parametric geometry model. In addition, this paper presents a methodology to integrate logic models with parametric design systems. To this end, logic models are introduced as a new set of domain-specific features responsible for the generation and management of the geometry, connecting the results with other part of the model by advanced procedural geometry dependencies. Finally, the proposed methodology is verified in a real case study for a suburban railway tunnel that is in the planning stage in the city of Munich, Germany. The paper concludes with

Data generated throughout the product development lifecycle is often unused to its full potential, particularly for improving the engineering design process. Although knowledge-based engineering (KBE) approaches are not new, the Digital Twin (DT) concept is giving new momentum to it, fostering the availability of lifecycle data with the potential to be transformed into new design knowledge. This approach creates an opportunity to research howdigital infrastructures and new knowledge-based processes can be articulated to implement more effective KBE approaches. This paper describes how combining a DT-based Digital Platform (DP) with new engineering design processes can improve knowledge Management (KM) in product design. A case study of a company in the energy sector highlights the challenges and benefits of this approach.

This paper presents an approach to support the update of knowledge-based engineering template instances. As result of this approach, engineers are provided with a sequence of documents, giving the order in which they have to be updated. The generation of the sequence is based on the dependencies. In order to be able to compute a sequence, information about templates, Computer-Aided Design models and their relations are required. Thus an ontology has been designed in order to provide a comprehensive knowledge representation about templates and assemblies, and to allow inference on this knowledge. This knowledge is then used by a ranking algorithm, which generates the sequence from modified templates, without involving a manual analysis of the models and their dependencies. This will prevent mistakes and save time as the analysis and choices are automatically computed.
