Virtual material characterization of 3D orthogonal woven composite materials by large-scale computing

In this paper, the virtual material characterization of three dimensional (3D) orthogonal woven composite materials is investigated by large-scale Finite element analyses to predict the elastic properties. To numerically model the complex geometry of 3D orthogonal woven composites, a unit structure including the stuffer yarns, filler yarns, weaver yarns, and the resin region is generated based on direct numerical simulation (DNS) and the unit structures with the same pattern are assembled into an orthogonal woven composite structure composed of several millions of degrees of freedom. The influence of the geometrical irregularities, such as the inconsistent tow spacing and the waviness of the filler yarn, on the mechanical properties are also discussed by separately generating the yarns and the resin. From the numerical examples, it is shown that the pattern of tow distribution affects the shear modulus, and the direct modeling of the wavy yarns can produce more accurate stiffness knockdown. It is also emphasized that large-scale numerical analyses can be one of the methodologies sufficient for the material characterization of the orthogonal woven composites and can be more applicable in the realistic structure subject to complex loading compared to the unit cell approach.

A heuristic approach for the allocation of resources in large-scale computing infrastructures

An increasing number of enterprise applications are intensive in their consumption of IT but are infrequently used. Consequently, either organizations host an oversized IT infrastructure or they are incapable of realizing the benefits of new applications. A solution to the challenge is provided by the large-scale computing infrastructures of clouds and grids, which allow resources to be shared. A major challenge is the development of mechanisms that allow efficient sharing of IT resources. Market mechanisms are promising, but there is a lack of research in scalable market mechanisms. We extend the multi-attribute combinatorial exchange mechanism with greedy heuristics to address the scalability challenge. The evaluation shows a trade-off between efficiency and scalability. There is no statistical evidence for an influence on the incentive properties of the market mechanism. This is an encouraging result as theory predicts heuristics to ruin the mechanism's incentive properties. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Topology Optimization for large-scale Unsteady Flow With the Building-Cube Method

This study proposes a novel framework for solving large-scale unsteady flow topology optimization problems. While most previous studies on fluid topology optimization assume steady-state flows, an increasing number of recent studies deal with unsteady flows, which are more general in engineering. However, unsteady flow topology optimization involves solving the governing and adjoint equations of a time-evolving system, which requires a significant computational cost for topology optimization with a fine mesh. Therefore, we propose a large-scale unsteady flow topology optimization based on the building-cube method (BCM), which is one of the hierarchical Cartesian mesh methods. Although the BCM has been confirmed to have excellent scalability and is suitable for massively parallel computing, there are no studies that have applied it to unsteady flow topology optimization. In the proposed method, the governing and adjoint equations are discretized by a cell-centered finite volume method based on the BCM, which can achieve high parallel efficiency even with a fine mesh. The effectiveness of the proposed method for large-scale computing is discussed through several examples of optimization and verification of computational efficiency by weak scaling.

Currently, most of cloud computing services based on IaaS are provided by one specific provider for many users. In contrast, we have advocated a "participating fine-granular cloud computing platform" that a large number of personal or small company level resource suppliers participates in, configures and provides cloud computing, as an ultimately evolved form of cloud computing environment. When large-scale resources are requested by users in environments where small amount of resources are provided by many suppliers, appropriate resources for a large-scale request should be selected. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a resource search method for large-scale computing, in which resources that are close to each other are selected and used by each user to support quick computation and communication response, and low traffic load in the network.

DPAC: An object-oriented distributed and parallel computing framework for manufacturing applications

Parallel and distributed computing infrastructure are increasingly being embraced in the context of manufacturing applications, including real-time scheduling. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of one such framework that can work on the Internet, with applications in manufacturing. The architecture, aliased as DPAC (Distributed and Parallel computing framework), has the goal of harnessing the Internet's vast, growing computational capacity for ultra-large, coarse-grained parallel applications. The idea is to bring together diverse, heterogeneous, geographically distributed computing environments in order to attack large-scale computing problems. We present a scalable and fault-tolerant architecture in DPAC and the results of running performance experiments. DPAC is implemented on the interoperable, increasingly secure, and ubiquitous platform, viz, Java. The unique feature of DPAC is that it frees application developers from concerns about complex interprocess communication and fault tolerance among Internet-worked hosts and supports piecework and branch-and-bound computational models. We describe an implementation and present case studies showing the effectiveness in solving complex combinatorial optimization problems in the context of manufacturing systems.

Extreme learning machines: new trends and applications

Extreme learning machine(ELM), as a new learning framework, draws increasing attractions in the areas of large-scale computing, high-speed signal processing, artificial intelligence, and so on. ELM aims to break the barriers between the conventional artificial learning techniques and biological learning mechanism and represents a suite of machine learning techniques in which hidden neurons need not to be tuned. ELM theories and algorithms argue that "random hidden neurons" capture the essence of some brain learning mechanisms as well as the intuitive sense that the efficiency of brain learning need not rely on computing power of ***, compared with traditional neural networks and support vector machine, ELM offers significant advantages such as fast learning speed, ease of implementation, and minimal human intervention. Due to its remarkable generalization performance and implementation efficiency, ELM has been applied in various applications. In this paper, we first provide an overview of newly derived ELM theories and approaches. On the other hand,with the ongoing development of multilayer feature representation, some new trends on ELM-based hierarchical learning are discussed. Moreover, we also present several interesting ELM applications to showcase the practical advances on this subject.

A graph-based approach for population health analysis using Geo-tagged tweets

We propose in this work a graph-based approach for automatic public health analysis using social media. In our approach, graphs are created to model the interactions between features and between tweets in social media. We investigated different graph properties and methods in constructing graph-based representations for population health analysis. The proposed approach is applied in two case studies: (1) estimating health indices, and (2) classifying health situation of counties in the US. We evaluate our approach on a dataset including more than one billion tweets collected in three years 2014, 2015, and 2016, and the health surveys from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. We conducted realistic and large-scale experiments on various textual features and graph-based representations. Experimental results verified the robustness of the proposed approach and its superiority over existing ones in both case studies, confirming the potential of graph-based approach for modeling interactions in social networks for population health analysis.

A method of substructuring large-scale computational micromechanical problems

In this work. a method is developed to decompose or substructure large-scale micromechanical simulations into a set of computationally smaller problems. In the approach the global domain is partitioned into nonoverlapping subdomains. On the interior subdomain partitions an approximate globally kinematically admissible solution is projected. This allows the subdomains to be mutually decoupled, and therefore separately solvable. The subdomain boundary value problems are solved with the exact microstructural representation contained within their respective boundaries, but with approximate displacement boundary data. The resulting microstructural solution is the assembly of the subdomain solutions, each restricted to its corresponding subdomain. The approximate solution is far more inexpensive to compute than the direct problem. A posteriori error bounds are developed to quantify the quality of the approximate solution. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the essential concepts. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Evolution of Hardware Morphology of large-scale Computers and the Trend of Space Allocation for Thermal Management

Thermal management of very large-scale computers will have to leave the traditional well-beaten path. Up to the present time, the primary concern has been with rising heat flux on the integrated circuit chip, while a space has been available for the implementation of high-performance cooling design. In future systems, the spatial constraint will become a primary determinant of thermal management methodology. To corroborate this perspective, the evolution of computer's hardware morphology is simulated. Simulation tool is the geometric model, where the model structure is composed of circuit cells and platforms for circuit blocks. The cell is the minimum circuit element whose size is pegged to the technology node, while the total number of cells represents the system size. The platforms are the models of microprocessor chips, multichip modules (MCMs), and printed wiring boards (PWBs). The major points of discussion are as follows: (1) The system morphology is dictated by the competition between the progress of technology node and the demand for increase in the system size. (2) Only where the miniaturization of cells is achieved so as to deploy a system on a few PWBs, ample space is created for thermal management. (3) In the future, the cell miniaturization will hit the physical limit, while the demand for larger systems will be unabated. Liquid cooling, where the coolant is driven through very long microchannels, may provide a viable thermal solution.
