VLSI layout OF BINARY-TREE STRUCTURES

algorithms are presented in this paper for VLSI layout of come binary tree structures. In particular, we consider X-Tree and Hypertree multicomputers and show that they can be laid out in O(8 n ) and O( n √ n ) area respectively. Our algorithms are based on an original algorithm proposed by Horowitz and Zorat for an arbitrary tree structure. The layout follows Thompson's VLSI model of computation that allows two layers of metalization.

Background: Visualization concerns the representation of data visually and is an important task in scientific research. Protein-protein interactions (PPI) are discovered using either wet lab techniques, such mass spectrometry, or in silico predictions tools, resulting in large collections of interactions stored in specialized databases. The set of all interactions of an organism forms a protein-protein interaction network (PIN) and is an important tool for studying the behaviour of the cell machinery. Since graphic representation of PINs may highlight important substructures, e. g. protein complexes, visualization is more and more used to study the underlying graph structure of PINs. Although graphs are well known data structures, there are different open problems regarding PINs visualization: the high number of nodes and connections, the heterogeneity of nodes (proteins) and edges (interactions), the possibility to annotate proteins and interactions with biological information extracted by ontologies (e. g. Gene Ontology) that enriches the PINs with semantic information, but complicates their visualization. Methods: In these last years many software tools for the visualization of PINs have been developed. Initially thought for visualization only, some of them have been successively enriched with new functions for PPI data management and PIN analysis. The paper analyzes the main software tools for PINs visualization considering four main criteria: (i) technology, i. e. availability/license of the software and supported OS (Operating System) platforms;(ii) interoperability, i. e. ability to import/export networks in various formats, ability to export data in a graphic format, extensibility of the system, e. g. through plug-ins;(iii) visualization, i. e. supported layout and rendering algorithms and availability of parallel implementation;(iv) analysis, i. e. availability of network analysis functions, such as clustering or mining of the graph, and the possibility to

Background: In our studies of genetically isolated populations in a remote mountain area in the center of Sardinia (Italy), we found that 80-85% of the inhabitants of each village belong to a single huge pedigree with families strictly connected to each other through hundreds of loops. Moreover, intermarriages between villages join pedigrees of different villages through links that make family trees even more complicated. Unfortunately, none of the commonly used pedigree drawing tools are able to draw the complete pedigree, whereas it is commonly accepted that the visual representation of families is very important as it helps researchers in identifying clusters of inherited traits and genotypes. We had a representation issue that compels researchers to work with subsets extracted from the overall genealogy, causing a serious loss of information on familiar relationships. To visually explore such complex pedigrees, we developed PedNavigator, a browser for genealogical databases properly suited for genetic studies. Results: The PedNavigator is useful for genealogical research due to its capacity to represent family relations between persons and to make a visual verification of the links during family history reconstruction. As for genetic studies, it is helpful to follow propagation of a specific set of genetic markers (haplotype), or to select people for linkage analysis, showing relations between various branch of a family tree of affected subjects. Availability: PedNavigator is an application integrated into a Framework designed to handle data for human genetic studies based on the Oracle platform. To allow the use of PedNavigator also to people not owning the same required informatics infrastructure or systems, we developed PedNavigator Lite with mainly the same features of the integrated one, based on MySQL database server. Many real-world networks, including social and computer networks, have complex time-varying characteristics that evolve over time. Such dynamic networks are typically visualized using a sequence of timeslices, each timeslice presents the network topology at a particular time step. It is difficult to preserve the dynamic stability and visual continuity of the timeslices sequence, which allow researchers to interpret the temporal evolution of the network. In this paper, a dynamic network layout visualization method based on structural similarity is proposed to improve the quality of the timeslices. First, using network layout algorithm based on the community structure lay-outs a single timeslice and optimizing the layout through the static network cost function. Then, the new nodes are pre placed and the movement direction of nodes are constrained by a node movement method based on the s structural similarity, which can improve the dynamic stability and visual continuity of the timeslices sequence layout. Experiments show that the proposed method has a smaller layout cost in a single timeslice compared with the traditional dynamic network visualization, and a smaller node moving distance and the degree of structural shape change in the timeslices sequence.

Stacked area charts are a common visualisation type for sets of time series. Yet, they are also known to be challenging to read, in particular if the time series exhibit much fluctuation or even abrupt changes. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to improving the layout of stacked area charts by means of reordering the time series in the stack. This approach breaks down into two parts: First, we gather aesthetic criteria and define associated quality metrics for stacked area charts. Second, we use these quality metrics together with a new algorithm called UpwardsOpt to find orderings of the stacked time series that optimise a chart's aesthetic properties. The produced orderings guarantee optimality in the sense that no better result can be obtained by moving any individual time series to a different position in the stack. In a benchmark study, we show that our algorithm can increase the layout quality up to 25%-50% over the state-of-the-art approach at the expense of longer runtimes. All datasets and an open source implementation of our algorithm are provided to facilitate their reuse and the reproducibility of our results.

Storyline visualization is a technique that captures the spatio-temporal characteristics of individual entities and simultaneously illustrates emerging group behaviors. We developed a storyline visualization leveraging dynamic time warping to parse and cluster eye tracking sequences. Visualization of the results captures the similarities and differences across a group of observers performing a common task. We applied our storyline approach to gaze patterns of people watching dynamic movie clips. We use these to illustrate variations in the spatio-temporal patterns of observers as captured by different data encoding techniques. We illustrate that storylines further aid in the identification of modal patterns and noteworthy individual differences within a corpus of eye tracking data.

Classification for the Concrete Syntax of Graph-Like Modeling Languages

A classification scheme for Graph-Like Modeling Languages (GLML) is presented in this paper. The novelty of this classifier lies in its application to a meta-model for GLML that deviates from the simple graph model and underlies a large number of GLML. The main goal of using this classification scheme is to support the reuse of layout algorithms for GLML. GLML are used directly or indirectly for the development of software by model-based software engineering techniques. In other domains, graph-like models are artifacts (e.g., circuit diagrams, energy flow diagrams) that serve as input for downstream specialized applications (simulators, optimizers). The concrete syntax of a language for creating, editing, and understanding models is highly important for the development of modeling tools. layout methods for the used languages have to be implemented to achieve software tools with good usability. Developing layout algorithms is a complex topic that is covered by the specialized field of Graph Drawing. However, there is no existing procedure to determine which layout algorithm can be used for a GLML. Matching layout algorithms to GLML can be achieved by applying the presented classification scheme. © 2023, The Author(s).

This paper introduces concept and functionalities of two novel electronic design automation EDA Tools for system planning and 3D layout design of smart items.
