Cole-programming: Shaping Collaborative learning Support in Eclipse

In the teaching of those subjects related to computer programming competences, a teaching/learning methodology based on problem solving is often used, which sometimes involves the application of techniques such as pair programming. In addition, to perform the programming-related tasks, it is common to use professional integrated development environments. Thus, it may be interesting to integrate tools in these environments so that they can support the teaching/learning process. This paper discusses how we have adapted an existing eclipse-based system for learning programming, so that now it has support for collaborative tasks. The new features have been specially designed to solve programming-related assignments and integrated into the learning environment. We also analyze the first impressions gathered from students in the initial experiences made on the system.

Initial programming education is a topic that continues to spark much debate, as it is an academic field with a notably high rate of student dropouts and failures. The challenge of offering this subject through distance education adds to the complexity, given the need for students to adapt to this mode of teaching and learning, which significantly differs from traditional classroom settings. Multiple studies suggest that students must appropriately develop cognitive and non-cognitive skills for effective learning. Yet, there is a pressing need for further investigation into the impact of non-cognitive skills on student performance, with a particular focus on motivation, which plays an important role in student success. In this sense, considering the specificities of learning programming, the context of distance education, this research aims to understand the factors that can stimulate students' motivation for initial learning of programming, developing a virtual learning environment that promotes student motivation to learn to program and evaluate the environment to identify whether its features have the potential to stimulate student motivation.

learning object-oriented programming paradigm can be difficult and challenging for novices, especially the first year degree students who do not have any prior programming experience. The traditional learning and teaching methods are insufficient to support the learners or students. A game-based learning approach can be an efficient way for the students to learn object-oriented programming. This is because empirical evidence verifying computer games as educationally efficient tools for learning OOP is still absent from the literature. Thus, this paper proposes computer games that are developed according to the game-based learning design approach model for students to learn object-oriented programming paradigm. In the proposed game, several relevant theories are included to ensure the entire learning process is motivating and easy to learn. The game divides the learning content into several levels and quests. Students are required to communicate with the non-player character for learning purposes and complete the quests to proceed to the next level. Each quest adopts different gameplay mechanics to suit the learning objectives. Besides that, compared with other games for learning programming such as Alice 2D, Greenfoot, Darwin and CodeCombat, the proposed computer game only focuses on the game play to carry out the learning objective (no coding exercise type of game play needed). Most of the existing games for learning programming require coding practice type of game mechanics. All these games have their own approach and objective that could still be inefficient to support the learning process for novice in learning OOP. Playing is one of the most efficient ways for learners to gain whatever knowledge they require and computer games can be an engaging learning medium for the teaching and learning process. Thus, a computer game that focuses on the game play without coding practice will be an efficient tool for learning OOP.

PY-RATE ADVENTURES: A 2D Platform Serious Game for learning the Basic Concepts of programming With Python

Background. learning programming is a cognitively demanding field of study accompanied with various difficulties. Although there is a high demand in the market for programmers, software analysts and engineers, a high dropout rate is recorded in relevant fields of study. Serious games are a promising means of engaging students in learning programming by giving them more incentives and making the process of learning programming concepts and languages more entertaining. Aim. This article introduces a new serious game called PY-RATE ADVENTURES, which aims to assist young students in their introduction to the basic programming concepts using Python. The game does not have any prerequisites and is suitable for players with no previous knowledge of programming. This article aims to present important information regarding the analysis, design and pilot evaluation of PY-RATE ADVENTURES. Method. The game was evaluated by 31 people that had recently graduated or were students of an Interdepartmental Programme of Postgraduate Studies in Information Systems. The participants voluntarily played the game and answered a questionnaire based on the MEEGA+ model, after their hands on experience with the game. This questionnaire's purpose was to evaluate PY-RATE ADVENTURES in terms of perceived player experience and short-term learning. Results. The participants positively evaluated the game almost in all the elements of player experience. Furthermore, the majority of the users consider that the game helped them to learn basic programming concepts in Python and stated that they would prefer to learn programming with this game rather than other teaching methods. Conclusion. The positive results of the pilot evaluation give us the motivation to proceed and evaluate the game with students in secondary education, in order to extract stronger and generalisable conclusions regarding the impact of the game as an educational tool for learning programming concepts.

Object-oriented programming is a required fundamental skillset for all computer science related students. However, teaching object-oriented programming to undergraduate year one students is challenging and academician need to use a different approach to find suitable methods to enhance student understanding, self-interest and self-experimentation. However, the classroom-based learning and teaching methods are insufficient to support learners or students, especially in learning a programming related subject. A game-based learning approach could be an efficient way for the students to learn object-oriented programming. This is mainly because the empirical evidence that validates computer games is an efficient tool for learning object-oriented programming is still absent from the literature. The proposed computer game is developed according to the game-based learning design approach model, where several relevant theories, such as condition of learn, operant conditioning, constructive, hierarchy of needs and bloom taxonomy are included to ensure that the entire learning process is motivating and easy to learn. The game-based learning design model is divided to three layers, such as presentation layer, learning theory layer and core game-play layer. Each layer covers a different expect, where focus is on how to make the learning environment more effective for player to learn object-oriented programming. The proposed game is a role-playing game named Odyssey of Phoenix that motivates users to learn object-oriented programming in an easy and interactive environment. Players will play along the flow of each game quest and they will easily learn and pick up the object-oriented programming paradigm. Players are not required to have any coding practice and learn via the provided game-play with pseudo code support. Understanding the significant of object-oriented programming, a propriety game-based learning game has been designed and develops as a learning tool to improve the student understanding toward object-oriented programming and self-motivation to learn. The proposed game is a simple role-playing game named ZTECH that motivates users to learn Object-Oriented programming in an easy and interaction environment. Players will play along the flow of each game quests and they will learn and pick up the object-oriented programming paradigm easily. This paper presented ARCode, the system that employed augmented reality (AR) to motivate and help learners with programming Since programming is an abstract task, many need help with programming, both technically and emotionally. ARCode is the game-based learning system that shows how each command works by using AR animations, and focuses on the logical order of commands. Learners can collaborate in the real world while practicing individually in the application. In our experiment, we found that the treatment group had significantly improved on their scores for all topics except for Selection, while the control group did not. The user satisfaction survey suggested that more than 80% of users accepted our system as a useful, enjoyable, and collaborative learning system. The primary results showed the system's potential to help learners better learn programming with high motivation.

Instructing with Cognitive Apprenticeship programming learning System (CAPLS) for novice computer science college freshmen: An exploration study

This study presents a new blended learning model that combines a computer-assisted learning system called Cognitive Apprenticeship programming learning System (CAPLS) with instructor co-teaching in an introductory programming course. CAPLS, as its unique aspect, functions as a master in cognitive apprenticeship, guiding learners throughout their learning while also assessing their progress. In contrast, the instructor in physical class settings serves a supportive role, monitoring progress and articulating as needed to fill knowledge gaps. To investigate the impact of this learning model on students’ motivation, we used the Motivated Strategies for learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) at the beginning and end of the semester. College Entrance Math score, midterm and final exams were also used to assess student learning outcomes. The study was conducted with first-year students in the Department of Information and Computer Engineering, and two key findings emerged. First, students’ programming proficiency was strongly correlated with their College Entrance Math scores. While math ability impacted programming learning, all students improved their final scores compared to their midterms, with high-scoring math students outperforming their peers. Second, the proposed blended cognitive teaching strategy significantly reduced students’ extrinsic goal and self-efficacy levels, but their learning outcomes still significantly improved. This suggests that the proposed teaching model promotes more conscious learning. These results can be used as a reference for improving student learning outcomes and experiences with computer-assisted learning systems. © (2023), (International Forum of Educational Technology and Society). learning to program involves a variety of cognitive activities and mental representations. Given the problem's complexity and the intention to apprehend the particularity and peculiarity of student's experience in learning programming informal and non-formal contexts, this research adopts a qualitative approach to characterize the complex interrelationship between computational participation and the learning process of programming, without isolating it from the natural context in which it develops, seeking to achieve its understanding from the observation of multiple cases.

In an effort to meet the challenges of teaching programming, learning management systems are used to facilitate teaching and enhance learning. In this study we determined students' perceptions, expectations and effectiveness of the LMS as used in a campus-based programming course and gained insight into the undergraduate student population. A survey was administered after they had completed the course. The instrument explored the perceptions and effectiveness of the various features of the LMS in relation to programming. In addition interviews were conducted. Findings showed that the respondents rated the communication and discussion among the highest and guidance to solving problems among the lowest. We comment on the efficiency of the LMS and how far it goes to support students in problem solving.
