programming education should aim to provide students with a broad range of skills that they will later use while developing software. An important aspect in this is their ability to write code that is not only correct but also of high quality. Unfortunately, this is difficult to control in the setting of a massive open online course. In this paper, we carry out an analysis of the code quality of submissions from JetBrains Academy - a platform for studying programming in an industry-like project-based setting with an embedded code quality assessment tool called Hyperstyle. We analyzed more than a million Java submissions and more than 1.3 million Python submissions, studied the most prevalent types of code quality issues and the dynamics of how students fix them. We provide several case studies of different issues, as well as an analysis of why certain issues remain unfixed even after several attempts. Also, we studied abnormally long sequences of submissions, in which students attempted to fix code quality issues after passing the task. Our results point the way towards the improvement of online courses, such as making sure that the task itself does not incentivize students to write code poorly.

Immediate feedback has been shown to improve student learning. In programming courses, immediate, automated feedback is typically provided in the form of pre-defined test cases run by a submission platform. While these are excellent for highlighting the presence of logical errors, they do not provide novice programmers enough scaffolding to help them identify where an error is or how to fix it. To address this, several tools have been developed that provide richer feedback in the form of program repairs. Studies of such tools, however, tend to focus more on whether correct repairs can be generated, rather than how novices are using them. In this paper, we describe our experience of using CLARA, an automated repair tool, to provide feedback to novices. First, we extended CLARA to support a larger subset of the Python language, before integrating it with the Jupyter Notebooks used for our programming exercises. Second, we devised a preliminary study in which students tackled programming problems with and without support of the tool using the 'think aloud' protocol. We found that novices often struggled to understand the proposed repairs, echoing the well-known challenge to understand compiler/interpreter messages. Furthermore, we found that students valued being told where a fix was needed-without necessarily the fix itself-suggesting that 'less may be more' from a pedagogical perspective.

Serious games for programming provide players with some type of algorithmic mechanics to accomplish game challenges. Such mechanics maybe formally algorithmic, or in some cases not theoretically linked to strict programming constructs, although still characterized as programming-related games. We discuss a serious game with visual programming where the primary mission is the development of a simple 2d game. Its primary novelty is the lack of separate build and run cycles. There is only one game mode, with gameplay and game development being inseparable, where every game object can be clicked, live-programmed, and live-edited during play. Additionally, time may be freely rewind and replayed, undoing or redoing internally all related user actions and game state updates. During such time travels, it is allowed to drop the entire history onwards, from any given point in time, and continue from there.

Since the beginning of learning programming, the first-year student felt intimidated when learning to programme. Coding ability is a basic competency as a programmer, especially for Computer Science students. The limitation of class study time requires a self-learning. This study will identify students' Mental Model to help define the design of tailored e-learning in programming subject. This study was exploratory research involving 100 students that were purposively sampling from five departments. They answered an online questionnaire containing 16 questions about motivation to learn, competency levels, reasons/constraints in learning, efforts to learn, and expectations about the proposed systems. In the second session data collection, 20 students were selected who had detailed answers, and they represented each department. These twenty students were involved in the Focus Group Discussion to produce a mutually agreed mental model. The results are students believe that the programming logic is difficult to understand;the syntax is hard to remember, the logic is difficult to implement into coding, the students feel overwhelmed and the unsupported environment. The solution was found through a mental model in the form of the grouping of features that consider cognitive, behavioral, and student competency levels in programming subject, especially in Java programming The future work of this research is the simplification of learning material to provide the right portion for students by applying the three levels of mental models, so that proposed e-learning can accommodate learning needs of various user needs.

One of the most challenging tasks in computer science and similar courses consists of both teaching and learning computer programming. Usually this requires a great deal of work, dedication, and motivation from both teachers and students. Accordingly, ever since the first programming languages emerged, the problems inherent to programming teaching and learning have been studied and investigated. The theme is very serious, not only for the important concepts underlying computer science courses but also for reducing the lack of motivation, failure, and abandonment that result from students frustration. Therefore, early identification of potential problems and immediate response is a fundamental aspect to avoid student's failure and reduce dropout rates. In this paper, we propose a machine-learning (neural network) predictive model of student failure based on the student profile, which is built throughout programming classes by continuously monitoring and evaluating student activities. The resulting model allows teachers to early identify students that are more likely to fail, allowing them to devote more time to those students and try novel strategies to improve their programming skills.

Parsons problems are code segments that must be placed in the correct order with the correct indention. Research on Parsons problems suggests that they might be a more effective and efficient learning approach than writing equivalent code, especially for time-strapped secondary teachers. I am exploring this hypothesis with empirical experiments, observations, and log file analyses. Our research team also plans to modify the open-source js-parsons software to allow Parsons problems to be dynamically adaptive, which means that the difficulty of the problem will change based on the user's past performance. I plan to compare dynamically adaptive Parsons problems to the current non-adaptive Parsons problems to determine which learners prefer and to see if solving dynamically adaptive Parsons problems leads to more efficient and effective learning than solving non-adaptive Parsons problems.

To motivate students to study advanced programming techniques, including the use of architectural styles such as the model-view-controller pattern, we have conducted action research upon a project based-learning approach. In addition to collaboration, the approach includes students' searching and analysis of scientific documents and their involvement in communities of practice outside academia. In this paper, we report the findings of second action research cycle, which took place throughout the fourth semester of a six-semester program. As with the previous cycle during the previous academic year, students did not satisfactorily achieve expected learning out-comes. More groups completed the assigned activities, but results continue to reflect poor engagement in the communities of practice and very low performance in other learning tasks. From the collected data we have identified new approaches and recommendations for subsequent research.

This paper outlines a pilot study which expands the age range of students exposed to computer science through interesting and engaging activities. Through this engagement, the number of students who understood and recognized the concepts covered increased. We hypothesize that these activities can increase the number of students who pursue post-secondary computer science. We present a unique recursion curriculum that exposes nine students aged 11-14 through hands-on experience over a 7 week period at the University of Victoria, Canada. The curriculum was comprised of progressively challenging "unplugged" activities and included programming applications with the Logo based programming language MicroWorlds EX. Curriculum, classroom experience, preliminary results and next steps are discussed.

Background. programming is widely known to be a cognitively demanding field. learning programming can be a strenuous task without the proper guidance and methodology. Students often face difficulties in understanding even the most basic and fundamental concepts of programming, leading to their confusion and disappointment. Serious games for programming have the potential to alleviate students' difficulties with programming. Aim. This article introduces a new serious game named jAVANT-GARDE which aims to educate the player on the basic concepts of programming and object-oriented programming through Java. By design, the game is suitable for everyone, even for players with no previous knowledge of programming. This article aims to present important information regarding the design, implementation and pilot evaluation of jAVANT-GARDE. Method. The game was evaluated by 42 high school students (age 16-17) in terms of perceived player experience and short-term learning. The participants played the game for one hour in the school lab and then answered a questionnaire based on the MEEGA+ framework. Results. Students evaluated positively the game in terms of its usability, confidence in playing the game, challenge, satisfaction, fun, focused attention and relevance. Moreover, the majority of students stated that would prefer learning programming with this game to learning through other teaching methods. Conclusions. The results of the pilot study and students' replies in the questionnaire are rather positive. This gives us the initiative to proceed with studying the effect of the game in long-term learning of programming concepts.

This Research to Practice Full Paper presents a study on the evaluation of qualitative aspects of students' programs in an introductory programming course. Approaches have been proposed in order to address the quality of the source code, but they typically focus on automated analysis of syntactic aspects which might lead to generic feedback. In this study, we investigate if, by including students as evaluators, we could provide personalized feedback on the quality of source code. To do so, we applied a survey with assignments and their respective source codes answered by students in previous terms. Teachers and students analyze those source codes and gave suggestions to improve them qualitatively and, we found that most students identified code quality aspects with a similarity equal to or greater than 50% in comparison to teachers' and that similarity increases as students progress in the course. We found that students are particularly good at finding and giving feedback on complexity issues. This study may lead to further investigations on addressing source code quality on collaborative learning, and may also support the development of lint-like tools, once it yields detailed information on how students provide feedback regarding source code quality.
