Wireless localization using the received signal strength (RSS) can have tremendous savings over using specialized positioning infrastructures. In this work, we explore improving RSS localization performance in multipath environments by varying the transmitter's signal power and frequency. Using a theoretical analysis, we first show how selection of different signal powers and frequencies can improve localization accuracy for the least squares algorithm. We next develop a set of selection methods that attempt to select the combinations of power and frequencies which minimize the localization error. Our selection methods are based on the observed standard deviations of RSS as well as algorithm specific residuals. Using active RFID tags, we experimentally characterize the effect of using multiple signal powers and frequencies on a wide spectrum of RSS-based algorithms. We found that the performance of all the algorithms improves when lever-aging on multiple power levels and frequencies, although different algorithms present different sensitivity in terms of localization accuracy under different selection methods. ©2010 IEEE.

A novel reduced-order algorithm for rational models based on Arnoldi process and Krylov subspace

This paper presents a novel reduced-order algorithm for identifying rational models. From the Arnoldi process, an orthonormal basis of the Krylov subspace is constructed. Based on the Krylov subspace, a high-order cost function is transformed into a low-order one, thereby significantly reducing the computational efforts. This algorithm can be considered as a reduced-order least squares (LS) algorithm or an extension of the traditional gradient iterative (GI) algorithm for different Krylov subspaces, and it presents several advantages over the traditional LS and GI algorithms. The simulated numerical results/figures are consistent with the analytically derived results in terms of the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. With the addition of Bluetooth AOA/AOD direction-finding capabilities in the Bluetooth 5.1 protocol and the introduction of antenna array technology into the Bluetooth platform to further enhance positioning accuracy, Bluetooth has gradually become a research hotspot in the field of indoor positioning due to its standard protocol specifications, rich application ecosystem, and outstanding advantages such as low power consumption and low cost compared to other indoor positioning technologies. However, current indoor positioning based on Bluetooth AOA/AOD suffers from overly simplistic core algorithm implementations. When facing different application scenarios, the standalone AOA or AOD algorithms exhibit weak applicability, and they also encounter challenges such as poor positioning accuracy, insufficient real-time performance, and significant effects of multipath propagation. These existing problems and deficiencies render Bluetooth lacking an efficient implementation solution for indoor positioning. Therefore, this paper proposes a study on Bluetooth AOA and AOD indoor positioning algorithms. Through an analysis of the principles of Bluetooth's newly added direction-finding functionality and combined with research on array signal DOA estimation algorithms, the paper ultimately integrates the least squares algorithm to optimize positioning errors in terms of accuracy and incorporates an anti-multipath interference algorithm to address the impacts of multipath effects in different scenarios. Experimental testing demonstrates that the indoor positioning algorithms applicable to Bluetooth AOA and AOD can effectively mitigate accuracy errors and overcome multipath effects, exhibiting strong applicability and significant improvements in real-time performance.

Continuous-Time Parameter Estimation under Colored Perturbations Using “Equivalent Control Concept” and LSM with Forgetting

This paper deals with time problem of time-varying parameters estimation of stochastic systems under colored noise perturbations. These perturbations, have a standard “white noise” in the input of a forming filter which is assumed to be partially known (a nominal plant plus a bounded deviations). A two step method is proposed. First, it is designed a tracking process, based in the “equivalent control” technique, providing the finite-time equivalence of the origin stochastic process with unknown parameters to an auxiliary one. This step does not eliminate the noise, but it permits (at a short enough time) to represent the model to be identified in the, so-called, “regression form” and, at the same time, to realize the “semi-whitening” of noise keeping bounded uncertainties as an external unmeasured dynamics. In the second step the least squares Method (LSM) with a scalar forgetting factor is applied to estimate time varying parameters of the given model. The convergence zone analysis is presented. A numerical example illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A Methodology for Mathematical Modeling of Fish Behavior in a Water Tank

This paper deals with a method for investigating the behavior of fish in a water tank. The motion of fish is described mathematically by nonlinear state equations, in which the main causes for the motion are expressed as the components of the external force. A water tank experiment is carried out for obtaining the observation records of fish behavior. The time series data of the position for each fish is calculated from the image data recorded by a video tape. The parameter included in the model are estimated by using the least squares algorithm. As case studies, results are shown for two experiments in which bitter ling and rainbow trout are used respectively

Keyhole arc welding is a cost-effective process to weld thick materials. To successfully apply this process, the state of the keyhole must be accurately detected and used in feedback control. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of the plasma reflection is described using the reflection arc angle (RAA). It is found that the RAA series can be considered an autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) process. The parameters of the ARMA are recursively estimated using the extended least squares algorithm. It is found that the recursive estimates of the model parameters change as the state of the keyhole changes. A discriminator has been proposed to determine the state of the keyhole based on the recursive estimates of the model parameters.

Deep Learning to Find Key Brain Electrode Positions in Emotional EEG

At present, the channels used for EEG acquisition are more than 16, which makes it difficult to wear EEG caps and has poor contact. Therefore, it brings difficulties to the collection of brain waves is not conducive to converting research into applications. It is a well worth studying work in researching how to find the key brain electrode in the existing brain wave, which will greatly reduce the number of EEG acquisition points during application, making it easier to translate the research into practical application. This paper takes emotional EEG as an example to study how to find the key brain electrode points of emotional EEG with deep learning method. Firstly, using the least square regression algorithm to calculate the characteristic coefficients of each electrode point;secondly, according to the law of the characteristic coefficient value, grouping the key EEG poles for experiment. In the grouping experiment, the Conv1d-GRU model used to train and verify the EEG data of the corresponding electrode points. Finally, from the results of various grouping experiments, it concluded that the selection method of the key EEG level points should be the electrode points with positive characteristic coefficient, and the accuracy of verification is 97.6%. With experiments, it confirmed that there are key electrode points in the detection of emotional EEG by 16-channel OpenBCI. There are only six key electrode points of emotional EEG;that is to say, the EEG data collected by only six key electrode points can identify seven kinds of emotional EEG. .

The term partial discharge (PD) refers to a partial bridging of insulating material between electrodes that sustain an electric field in high-voltage (HV) systems. Long-term PD activity can lead to catastrophic failures of HV systems resulting in economic, energy and even human life losses. Such failures and losses can be avoided by continuously monitoring PD activity. Existing techniques used for PD localization including time of arrival (TOA) and time difference of arrival (TDOA), are complicated and expensive because they require time synchronization. In this paper, a novel received signal strength (RSS) based localization algorithm is proposed. The reason that RSS is favoured in this research is that it does not require clock synchronization and it only requires the energy of the received signal rather than the PD pulse itself. A comparison was made between RSS based algorithms including a proposed algorithm, the ratio and search and the least squares algorithm to locate a PD source for nine different positions. The performance of the algorithms was evaluated by using two field scenarios based on seven and eight receiving nodes, respectively. The mean localization error calculated for two-field-trial scenarios show, respectively, 1.80 m and 1.76 m for the proposed algorithm for all nine positions, which is the lowest of the three algorithms.

Active Noise Control (ANC) became in the last decade a very popular technique for controlling low-frequency noise. The increase in its popularity is a consequence of the rapid development in the field of computers in genera1 and more specifically in digital signal processing boards. ANC systems are application specific and therefore they should be optimally designed for each application. In this paper, the successful application of a Genetic algorithm, an optimization technique that belongs to the broad class of evolutionary algorithms, is presented.

For the multidimensional ARMAX model the unknown matrix coefficientsare estimated by both the least squares (LSA) and the stochastic gradient algorithms (SGA) and adaptive controls are designed either for minimizing the quadratic cost or for tracking a reference signal. By using the attenuating excitation and the randomly varying truncation techniques the consistency of estimates and the minimality of the loss function are achieved simultaneously.
