An efficient algorithm for globally solving generalized linear multiplicative programming

Generalized linear multiplicative programming problems are difficult problems known to be NP-hard, and they frequently arise in various areas such as engineering, economics, finance, etc. At present, most of the global optimization algorithms for this kind of problems are mainly developed based on those kinds of branch and bound algorithms. In this study, a new algorithm based on the concept of level set is presented for globally solving generalized linear multiplicative programming problems. The proposed algorithm is concise and easy to iniplement, so it is quite suitable for engineering applications. Finally, the global convergence is presented and the practical efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated by the numerical experiments. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

To effectively improve the low contrast of human body region in the infrared images, a combing method of several enhancement methods is utilized to enhance the human body region. Firstly, for the infrared images acquired by Kinect, in order to improve the overall contrast of the infrared images, an Optimal Contrast-Tone Mapping (OCTM) method with multi-iterations is applied to balance the contrast of low-luminosity infrared images. Secondly, to enhance the human body region better, a level set algorithm is employed to improve the contour edges of human body region. Finally, to further improve the human body region in infrared images, Laplacian Pyramid decomposition is adopted to enhance the contour-improved human body region. Meanwhile, the background area without human body region is processed by bilateral filtering to improve the overall effect. With theoretical analysis and experimental verification, the results show that the proposed method could effectively enhance the human body region of such infrared images.

Efficient Microwave Imaging algorithm Based on Hybridization of the Linear Sampling and level set Methods

A hybridized algorithm based on the linear sampling method and the level set technique is presented. The level set technique has shown the capability of accurate reconstruction of the shapes of unknown targets of different materials and arbitrary shapes but with significant computational time. The linear sampling method has shown comparatively rapid estimation of the targets' shapes. The presented algorithm retains the accuracy of the level set algorithm with significantly reduced computational time due to the hybridization of the level set method and the linear sampling method. Reconstruction results of Fresnel Institute experimental data are obtained using the hybridized algorithm.

The capability of the level set method is illustrated for shape and location reconstruction using real measurement data in the range of 3-8 GHz. An experimental setup is utilized to measure the S-parameters using two Vivaldi antennas revolving around metallic pipes of different cross-sections. A two-dimensional reconstruction of the pipe's cross section is retrieved using the level set algorithm combined with the Method of Moments and the frequency hopping technique. The results show good agreement between the reconstructed cross section and the true configuration. This indicates to the strength of the level set method and its ability to cope with the noise in real measurements.

The computation of the distance of a quadratic matrix polynomial to the quadratic matrix polynomials that are singular on the unit circle is investigated. The emphasis is placed on backward stable methods that transform the computation of the distance to a palindromic eigenvalue problem for which structure-preserving eigensolvers can be utilized in conjunction with a bisection algorithm. Reliability of the suggested methods is guaranteed by a novel error analysis.

Medical images have the characteristics of high noise and blurred edges, which makes them difficult to segment using traditional segmentation methods. The level set algorithm, which has been proved effective for medical image segmentation, is restricted in use mainly due to the extremely intensive computation during the iterative contour evolution. The paper proposes some criteria of loop iteration break for the level set algorithm, making it possible to adaptively adjust the number of iterations to the specific characteristics of various medical images, so that the contour evolution can be terminated appropriately. Meanwhile, we change the step length of the iteration according to the previous loop iteration result, making it possible to decrease the number of iterations needed. To decrease the computational workload, we also restrict the iteration to a certain part of the image instead of the whole image.

Discrete modeling of human body using preprocessing and segmentation techniques of medical images

The generation of anatomical models is one the most important concern to biomedical researchers as well as to medical doctors, due to needed to understand the human tissues. Is know that the soft tissues like heart, brain, prostate and hard tissues like jaw, bones, skull, etc are structures of complex morphologies, so, the anatomical models generation is not an easy and trivial task. Currently, this task has benefited of advances of imaging diagnostic, which permit obtain cross and longitudinal sections of human body. In this research, we describe a method to obtain 3D discrete models of human body given by a dataset of medical images. Five main modules were implemented in prototype software: (1) Reading and 3D reconstruction of Computerized Axial Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Images. (2) Preprocessing techniques for improve the low medical images quality by using enhancement algorithms to reduce image noise and to increase structures contrast. (3) Combined segmentation techniques for tissue identification, which were applied through a multi-stage approach. (4) Post processing techniques to improve segmented volumes and (5) Exportation task of volumes to readable formats by Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools to be later analyzed by numerical methods. The performance of our method is shown on several medical examples and the techniques were validated using statistical descriptors to compare our models with models from free databases. Results showed that the implemented techniques generate precise and useful models for numerical analysis and medical survey, planning and surgery in a short processing time. (C) 2010 CIMNE (UPC). This paper gives an accelerated evolutionary algorithm for structure topology optimization. It combines the merits of level set method and Evolutionary Structure Optimization (ESO) for structure topology optimization. The traditional level set algorithm has some drawbacks, for instance, its resultant optimal topology configuration depend on the initial configuration of the structure. Additionally, new holes cannot be inserted into the updated topology during the optimization iteration. The method proposed in this paper combines the merits of ESO techniques with the level set scheme, allowing new holes to be automatically inserted in regions with low deformation energy at prescribed iterations of the optimization. For complex structures in which holes cannot be properly inserted in advance, the proposed method considerably improves the ability of traditional level set algorithm to find the optimal topology, in addition to achieving more accurate results, the proposed method also yields higher efficiency during optimization. The validity and robustness of the new algorithm are supported with illustrative examples.

Drift Denoising of Experimental TE Measurements for Imaging 2D PEC Cylinders

This work presents shape reconstruction results using TE experimental scattering data of a perfect electric conducting (PEC) cylinder. The level set method combined with the method of moments is used for the reconstruction. The experimental data are collected using two ultrawideband strip-fed dielectric resonator antennas rotating around the target. The removal of the drift noise is achieved through spatial low-pass filtering, which is a key element to improve the reconstruction.

In the present work, a robust algorithm for automatic identification and segmentation of heart portion from cardiac Magnetic Resonance video Image (MRI) is presented. At first, an outline has been generated to get the region of interest (ROI) by employing the moving object criterion, which eventually reduces the processing time significantly. In the next step, Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm is used to segment the grey scale images into 5 distinct regions. This is done to make them more suitable for further processing and easy to use in the developed software. Finally level set algorithm added with automatic contour generation module is used for tracking the exact heart boundary to segment it out from the rest of the image. This algorithm gives equally persistent result for both long axis and shot axis cardiac MRI data consisting of a movie (in AVI format) containing 32 separate frames of grayscale images.
