EMV/EMC is a dominant problem encountered in high bit-rate (>100 Mb/s) transmission over unshielded twisted-pair cable (UTP) which leads to a novel set of line-code dependent tradeoffs affecting transceiver and cable plant complexity. To understand the tradeoffs, we examined the factors affecting RF emissions and susceptability in both trellis-configured cable plant models and installed cable plant. An analytical model is presented that describes mode conversion by discontinuities in multi-pair UTP cable plant. Termination of the three dominant propagating modes produces consistently lower radiated emissions than other standard cable termination procedures. Cable plant parameters which predict good transmission do not assure satisfactory EMI performance. Radiated emissions from the trellis model occur in broad bands at 43, 53, 60, 70, and 80 MHz, and show a positive correlation with the transmit signal spectrum. For a given transmit level at 155 Mb/s, the emissions with MLTS and BPR1 were 8-13 dB (10 dB typ) and 4-20 dB (13 dB typ) below NRZ levels, respectively. We also compared the performance of NRZ, MLT3, BPR1, and BPR4 line codes in an experimental 155 Mb/s link with 100 m of UTP5 by measuring the BER sensitivity to both injected noise and pseudo-random data sequence length. When the measured receiver penalty associated with three levels is included, MLT3, BPR1, and BPR4 offer 5-15 dB better performance over NRZ at 155 Mb/s, although implementation complexity is greater.

This paper presents line code for high-speed optical systems, called 2mB1I1C. The code enables simple error monitoring and has a good balance of marks ('1') and spaces ('0'). The total disparity of coded words is always less than or equal to that of the input code sequence. This causes the suppression of low frequency components in the power spectrum. Descriptions of the coder and the decoder are given, and some performance parameters are also determined (power spectrum, error multiplication factor, the maximum number of consecutive identical digits, error monitoring function). The comparison with the existing codes for high-speed optical systems is also included.

Channel-Aware line code Decision in RFID

In an RFID system, far field passive tags send information to the reader using back scattering. The signal strength of RFID tags is much smaller than that of a reader. So the channel condition significantly affects the tags' identification performance. Although there are 4 line codes in EPCglobal C1 G2, how to decide an appropriate line code is not specified. If the line codes can be adaptively decided by the channel condition, the performance of identification is increased. In this paper, we propose a novel line code decision protocol to measure the channel conditions and adaptively change the line code at every slot. We show that the performance of RFID identification is enhanced using our line code decision protocol via analysis and simulation.

Burst-mode penalty of AC-coupled optical receivers optimized for 8B/10B line code

We present an ac-coupled scheme for burst-mode optical receivers optimized for 8B/10B line code. The cutoff frequencies of the ac-coupled circuits are carefully adjusted to achieve fast response with minimal distortion to the 8B/10B signal spectrum. The proposed scheme is simple and technically feasible due to its adaptability to well-established continuous-mode components. The burst-mode penalty of the ac-coupled receiver is also investigated using numerical analysis. The numerical results are compared with measured data and good agreement is observed.

Using a line-of-code Metric to Understand Software Rework

Developers should factor rework into sizing and productivity calculations when estimating software effort. Reworked code is software created during development that doesn't exist in the final build. Using lines of code as a sizing metric is helpful when estimating projects with similar domains, platforms, processes, development teams, and coding constraints. A simple method can measure new effective lines of code (nLOC)—that is, added, changed, or deleted nonblank, noncomment lines of code—during development. Analysis of three projects shows that between 19 and 40 percent of the code written wasn't in the final release, with the nLOC measured biweekly and accumulated over each project's development.

In this paper a new digital passband modulation hierarchy has been proposed. It has the advantage of combining line coding and digital passband modulation in one entity, hence reducing the number of stages of the transmitter and the receiver. The new LCM enhances the transmitted signal with some desirable features such as favorable power spectral density, timing information, error detection and correction, hence, reducing bit synchronization complexity at the receiver, and improving the overall system performance.

The trellis coding technique is applied to line-coded baseband digital transmission systems. For R = n/n + 1(n = 1, 2, 3) coding rates, a new codeword assignment model is proposed to accomplish basic requirements for line coding in which each length n binary data sequence is encoded into a length n + 1 ternary (+, 0, -) line codeword chosen among the code alphabet with 2n+2 elements. Assuming Viterbi decoding, the system error performance is improved by increasing the free Euclidean distance between coded sequences. A new algorithm is given for the calculation of the free distance between line-coded sequences so obtained. For R = 1/2 and R = 3/4 rates, the analytical error performance upper bounds are derived. The power spectral densities of the new line codes are also calculated and compared with those of known line codes.

Space-time line coded regenerative two-way relay systems with power control

In this Letter, a general space-time line code (STLC)-based two-way relay (TWR) method is proposed to enable a power control for individual data streams transmitted to source nodes. Optimal power control factors are derived to ensure fairness between two source nodes under per-antenna power constraints. When the two-way channels are unbalanced, numerical results verify that the proposed method outperforms the existing TWR methods, an STLC TWR method without power control, and a space division multiple-access-based TWR method.

Performance of line codes in optical direct detection continuous phase frequency shift keying transmission system impaired by polarization mode dispersion

Small deviations from perfect circular symmetry in the core region of single mode fiber (SMF) cause optical pulses to become broadened as they propagate. This phenomenon is referred to as polarization mode dispersion (PMD), which leads to intersymbol interference and becomes a major impediment for the high speed long-haul fiber-optic links. We present here the theoretical complement for evaluating the performance of a line-coded continuous phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) optical transmission system with a direct detection receiver. The analysis is carried out for two different line-coding schemes, i.e. alternate mark inversion (AMI) and order-1 coding, to investigate the effectiveness of the line coding in counteracting the effect of PMD in a CPFSK direct detection transmission system in the presence of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and receiver noise in a single mode fiber. The average bit error rate (BER) performances are evaluated without and compared to that of line codes at a bit rate of 10 Gb s-1 considering Maxwellian distribution for the mean differential group delay (DGD). We found that the amount of power penalty improvement of line-coded systems is within 0.65 to 2.25 dB with respect to NRZ data at a BER of 10-9.
