This letter addresses the problem of designing sparse linear arrays with multiple constraints. The constraints could include the minimum and maximum distance between two adjacent elements, the total array length, the sidelobe level suppression in specified angular intervals, the main-lobe beamwidth, and the pre-defined number of elements. Our design method is based on differential evolution (DE) with strategy adaptation. We apply a DE algorithm (SaDE) that uses previous experience in both trial vector generation strategies and control parameter tuning. design cases found in the literature are compared to those found by SaDE and other DE algorithms. The results show that fewer objective-function evaluations are required than those reported in the literature to obtain better designs. SaDE also outperforms the other DE algorithms in terms of statistical results.

We present unequally spaced linear array synthesis with sidelobe suppression under constraints to beamwidth and null control using a design technique based on a Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimizer (CLPSO). CLPSO utilizes a new learning strategy that achieves the goal to accelerate the convergence of the classical PSO. Numerical examples are compared to the existing array designs in the literature and to those found by the other evolutionary algorithms. The synthesis examples that are presented show that the CLPSO algorithm outperforms the common PSO algorithms and a real-coded genetic algorithm (GA).

Synthesis of uniform linear arrays by using the orthogonal method is presented. Composing functions similar to that X of Woodward-Lawson technique are used. In Woodward-Lawson technique, sampling of the desired pattern is made. In this letter, instead of sampling, the orthogonal method is applied. The number of composing functions can be the same as or different than the elements of the arrays. Also, the progressive phase of each function can be derived in several ways. Numerical examples for the synthesis of different array patterns are presented, and the results show the usefulness of the method.

This paper describes fast, efficient and global optimization method called wind driven optimization (WDO) algorithm for nulling pattern synthesis of uniformly spaced linear array having maximum side lobe level (SLL) suppression, restricted dynamic range ratio (DRR), beam width and null control by controlling the array elements amplitude-only. A broad null is placed in the direction of maximum interference by undesired signals while receiving signal from the desired direction. The WDO is a new nature-inspired evolutionary algorithm derived from to the point movement of the air parcel in the earth's atmosphere. It uses a new learning strategy to update the velocity and position of air packets based on their current pressure values to accelerate the convergence. The pressure (objective) function is based on an exact penalty method. The results are compared with those obtained by other evolutionary algorithm such as bacterial foraging optimization (BFO), plant growth simulation algorithm (PGSA) and bee algorithm. The simulation study demonstrates that the WDO outperforms the three algorithms particularly in terms of minimum SLL, beam width control, DRR, null control and the rate of convergence.

This paper presents synthesis of unequally spaced linear array antenna with minimum sidelobe suppression, desired beamwidth and null control using wind driven optimization (WDO) algorithm. The WDO technique is nature-inspired, population based iterative heuristic global optimization algorithm for multidimensional and multimodal problems. The array synthesis objective function is formulated and then optimizes elements location using WDO algorithm to achieve the goal of minimum sidelobe level (SLL) suppression, desired beamwidth and null placement in certain direction. The results of the WDO algorithm are validated by comparing with results obtained using PSO and other evolutionary algorithm as reported in literature for linear array (N=10). The synthesis results such as radiation pattern and convergence graph show that WDO algorithm performs far better than the common PSO, CLPSO and other evolutionary algorithms.

The problem of optimizing the placement of the antennas for an optimum combining receiver equipped with a linear antenna array of fixed length is addressed. A Rayleigh fading model is considered where the complex channel gains of both the desired user and the interfering users are assumed to be correlated due to the mutual proximity of the antennas. The average output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is adopted as a measure of the system's performance and is maximized over the number and the arrangement of the antennas in the array. The optimization problem is formulated as a quadratic convex optimization problem in an infinite dimensional space where finite dimensional approximations of the problem are numerically solved using a convex optimization method. For the special case of an exponential correlation function the optimal arrangement is also derived analytically. It is shown for an exponential correlation model that the optimal number of antennas is infinite meaning that adding more antennas is always beneficial. Perhaps unexpectedly, the best arrangement of antennas in this case is not uniform, in general. On the contrary, it is shown through numerical results that for a two dimensional omnidirectional scattering correlation model the optimal number of antennas is a finite number and the optimum placement is uniform.
