Hybrid ARQ in Multiple-Antenna Slow Fading Channels: Performance Limits and Optimal linear dispersion code Design

This paper focuses on studying the fundamental performance limits and linear dispersion code design for the MIMO-ARQ slow fading channel. The optimal average rate of well-known HARQ protocols is analyzed. The optimal design of space-time coding for the MIMO-ARQ channel is discussed. Information-theoretic measures are used to optimize the rate assignment and derive the optimum design criterion, which is then used to evaluate the optimality of existing space-time codes. A different design criterion, which is obtained from the error probability analysis of space-time coded MIMO-HARQ, is presented. Examples are studied to reveal the gain of ARQ feedback in space-time coded MIMO systems.

linear dispersion codes (LDCs) have recently attracted numerous research interests. Thanks to their efficient spreading of data across both the time and spatial domains, LDCs are capable of achieving a desired Diversity-Multiplexing Trade-off (DMT) in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) broadband wireless access systems. This paper proposes a novel LDC design method, which relies on the unitary matrix theory combined with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) aided optimization procedure. The proposed design provides a flexible framework, where new LDCs attaining higher data rates and better error resilience than a number of classic MIMO schemes can be generated.

In this paper, we focus on the design of differential amplitude/phase modulation schemes by a look-up table for Rayleigh fading channels. In the first part of this paper, we first propose the noncoherent distance measure for each two signal vectors based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) signal detection under Rayleigh fading channels. The design criterion/procedure of the look-up table is then investigated. In the second part of this paper, linear dispersion codes are used to construct a multidimensional differential amplitude/phase modulation scheme, with the aid of the genetic algorithm. Both schemes are shown to provide improvements in error performance, when comparing to the conventional scheme provided in the literature.

In cooperative communication networks, owing to the nodes' arbitrary geographical locations and individual oscillators, the system is fundamentally asynchronous. This will damage some of the key properties of the space-time codes and can lead to substantial performance degradation. In this paper, we study the design of linear dispersion codes (LDCs) for such asynchronous cooperative communication networks. Firstly, the concept of conventional LDCs is extended to the delay-tolerant version and new design criteria are discussed. Then we propose a new design method to yield delay-tolerant LDCs that reach the optimal Jensen's upper bound on ergodic capacity as well as minimum average pairwise error probability. The proposed design employs stochastic gradient algorithm to approach a local optimum. Moreover, it is improved by using simulated annealing type optimization to increase the likelihood of the global optimum. The proposed method allows for flexible number of nodes, receive antennas, modulated symbols and flexible length of codewords. Simulation results confirm the performance of the newly-proposed delay-tolerant LDCs.

Generalized Space-Time Shift Keying Designed for Flexible Diversity-, Multiplexing- and Complexity-Tradeoffs

In this paper, motivated by the recent concept of Spatial Modulation (SM), we propose a novel Generalized Space-Time Shift Keying (G-STSK) architecture, which acts as a unified Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) framework. More specifically, our G-STSK scheme is based on the rationale that P out of Q dispersion matrices are selected and linearly combined in conjunction with the classic PSK/QAM modulation, where activating P out of Q dispersion matrices provides an implicit means of conveying information bits in addition to the classic modem. Due to its substantial flexibility, our G-STSK framework includes diverse MIMO arrangements, such as SM, Space-Shift Keying (SSK), linear dispersion codes (LDCs), Space-Time Block codes (STBCs) and Bell Lab's Layered Space-Time (BLAST) scheme. Hence it has the potential of subsuming all of them, when flexibly adapting a set of system parameters. Moreover, we also derive the Discrete-input Continuous-output Memoryless Channel (DCMC) capacity for our G-STSK scheme, which serves as the unified capacity limit, hence quantifying the capacity of the class of MIMO arrangements. Furthermore, EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) chart analysis is used for designing our G-STSK scheme and for characterizing its iterative decoding convergence.

On Soft Decision Value Calculation for linear-dispersion codes with SC-FDMA

The capability of error correction codes is largely dependent on the calculation of soft decision values. In this letter, linear-dispersion (LD) code is applied to single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) and the closed-form expression of soft decision values is derived. It is shown that the calculation of soft decision values generally depends on both time and space within an SC-FDMA symbol, as opposed to single-antenna transmission. In addition, a sufficient condition to guarantee the independence from time and space is presented.

A Fast-Decodable code Structure for linear dispersion codes

This paper proposes the design of a new family of fast-decodable, full-rank, flexible-rate linear dispersion codes (LDCs) for MIMO systems with arbitrary numbers of transmit and receive antennas. The codewords of LDCs can be expressed as a linear combination of certain dispersion matrices and, in this new family of LDCs, we propose to have orthogonal rows in as many dispersion matrices as possible. We show that, with the proposed code, the number of levels in the tree search and hence the complexity of the sphere decoder (SD) at the receiver can be substantially reduced. Monte Carlo computer simulation has shown that the LDCs with and without the orthogonal structure have nearly identical bit-error-rate (BER) performances. However, the complexity of the SD used for decoding the proposed family of LDCs is substantially reduced.

Coherent and Differential Space-Time Shift Keying: A dispersion Matrix Approach

Motivated by the recent concept of Spatial Modulation (SM), we propose a novel Space-Time Shift Keying (STSK) modulation scheme for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication systems, where the concept of SM is extended to include both the space and time dimensions, in order to provide a general shift-keying framework. More specifically, in the proposed STSK scheme one out of.. dispersion matrices is activated during each transmitted block, which enables us to strike a flexible diversity and multiplexing tradeoff. This is achieved by optimizing both the space-time block duration as well as the number of the dispersion matrices in addition to the number of transmit and receive antennas. We will demonstrate that the resultant equivalent system model does not impose any Inter-Channel Interference (ICI), and hence the employment of single-stream Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection becomes realistic at a low-complexity. Furthermore, we propose a Differential STSK (DSTSK) scheme, assisted by the Cayley unitary transform, which does not require any Channel State Information (CSI) at the receiver. Here, the usual error-doubling, caused by the differential decoding, gives rise to 3-dB performance penalty in comparison to Coherent STSK (CSTSK). Additionally, we introduce an enhanced CSTSK scheme, which avoids the requirement of Inter-Antenna Synchronization (IAS) between the RF chains associated with the transmit Antenna Elements (AEs) by imposing a certain constraint on the dispersion matrix design, where each column of the dispersion matrices includes only a single non-zero component. Moreover, according to the turbo-coding principle, the proposed CSTSK and DSTSK schemes are combined with multiple serially concatenated codes and an iterative bit-to-symbol soft-demapper. More specifically, the associated STSK parameters are optimized with the aid of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts, for the sake of achieving a near-capacity performance.

Despite the popularity and importance of linear dispersion (LD) codes, precoding for LD codes has rarely been investigated. In this paper we propose a method for designing a precoder codebook for LD codes in spatially and temporally correlated channels. Our codebook consists of two parts: a unitary codebook and a diagonal codebook. We propose a systematic algorithm for a unitary codebook design because unitary codebooks are hard to generate using numerical optimization methods. For each column (starting with the first column), we generate a set of vectors in the null space of previous columns. These vectors are generated by skewing i.i.d. unit vector codebooks by means of channel statistics-dependent transformations. A diagonal codebook is generated using a vector quantization technique. We use mutual information as a design criterion throughout this paper. Numerical results illustrate the benefits of matching a codebook to channel statistics and employing adaptive power shaping.
