Convex primal decomposition for multicarrier linear MIMO transceivers

The design of linear transceivers for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems with channel state information is particularly challenging for two main reasons. First, since several substreams are established through the MIMO channel, it is not even clear how the quality of the system should be measured. Second, once a cost function has been chosen to measure the quality, the optimization of the system according to such criterion is generally difficult due to the nonconvexity of the problem. Recent results have solved the problem for the wide family of Schur-concave/convex functions, resulting in simple closed-form solutions when the system is modeled as a single MIMO channel. However, with several MIMO channels (such as in multi-antenna multicarrier systems), the solution is generally more involved, leading. in some cases to the need to employ general-purpose interior-point methods. This problem is specifically addressed in this paper by combining the closed-form solutions for single MIMO channels with a primal decomposition approach, resulting in a simple and efficient method for multiple MIMO channels. The extension to functions that are not Schur-concave/convex is also briefly considered, relating the present work with a recently proposed method to minimize the average bit error rate (BER) of the system.

Sum-Rate-Optimal Statistical Precoding for FDD Massive MIMO Downlink With Deterministic Equivalents

Statisticalprecoding is considered as a promising technique to release the channel state information (CSI) acquisition overhead. This article investigates a linear precoder design for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO downlink with only statistical CSI. We use a beam-based statistical channel model to capture the spatial correlation characteristics of the channels. The objective of the precoder design is to maximize the ergodic sum-rate under total power constraint. Based on the minorize-maximize (MM) algorithm, a stationary solution of the ergodic sum-rate maximization problem can be obtained. The stationary solution is shown to be the same as the optimal solution to a stochastic weighted minimum mean square error (SWMMSE) problem. Further, we establish the approximations for rate expressions with deterministic equivalent. The deterministic equivalents of ergodic rates are only related to the precoding matrices and statistical CSI. According to these closed-form rate expressions, we propose a linear precoder design algorithm and obtain tractable expressions for precoding matrices. Numerical comparisons with the existing precoding approach demonstrate the significant advantages of the developed algorithm.

On the Performance of Multi-Way Massive MIMO Relay With linear Processing

Previous works on multi-way massive MIMO relay only consider either Matched Filter (MF)/Maximum Ratio Transmission (MRT) or Zero Forcing as the pairs for the detector (or receiver) and the precoder for the uplink and downlink transmissions, respectively. This paper considers a more complex linear receiver/precoder pair, i.e., the minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver and the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoder. Obtaining the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) or the spectral efficiency (SE) of this pair is difficult. In this work, this issue is resolved by performing the analysis in the large system regime, where the number of users (K) and the number of antennas (N) at the relay go unbounded with a constant ratio. We assume that perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the massive MIMO relay and employ the time-division duplex (TDD) protocol with perfect channel reciprocity. We derived the large system SINR approximations not only for the MMSE-RZF pair but also for the ZF-ZF and MF-MRT pairs. Numerical simulations show that the large system results are accurate for practical finite system sizes. We also obtained the limiting SINR for all pairs in the massive MIMO regime where K is finite, but N goes unbounded ( $K/N\to 0$ ) for different power scaling laws. In this regime, it is interesting to see that when the uplink power is scaled by N, the limiting SINRs of all pairs become equal, and thus, the least complex pair, MF-MRT, becomes beneficial.

We propose a joint set of linear precoder designs for single cell uplink multiuser space-time block coded multiple-input multiple-output systems with multi-packet reception by exploiting outdated channel state information. By deriving the pairwise error probability with respect to both minimum and average codeword distance design metrics, we formulate the design as an optimization problem subject to transmit power constraint for each user. Due to the non-convex nature of the optimization problem, we devise an iterative algorithm to solve for linear precoding structure for general space-time block code. For orthogonal space-time block code, we also propose a simplified distributed algorithm to solve for a closed-form solution. Asymptotic analysis on the effect of quality of the outdated channel state information (CSI) on the precoder structure is also presented. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed designs for different space-time block codes at various CSI qualities.

Multiuser Two-Way Nonregenerative MIMO Relaying With Nonconcurrent Traffic

Multiuser two-way relaying (MWR) enables multiple users to exchange data with a base station (BS) via a half-duplex relay in two channel uses. MWR assumes a specific traffic pattern, where users concurrently transmit/receive data to/from the BS. In this paper, we design a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relaying protocol for a nonconcurrent traffic scenario, where one set of users transmits data to the BS in the first channel use, whereas another set of users receives data from the BS in the second channel use. By designing a novel linear precoder at the nonregenerative relay and by applying dirty-paper coding (DPC) at the BS, we maximize the: 1) minimum rate among all users;and 2) weighted sum rate (WSR) of the system, via the formulation of two geometric programs. Simulation results demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed precoder over conventional ones.

In this paper, we focus on the optimization of a linear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoder assuming an outer forward error correction code and an iterative minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based interference cancellation (turbo equalization) at the receiver side. Given perfect channel state information at both sides of the communication, we propose a novel precoder that is specifically designed to use with turbo equalization. In contrast to the conventional precoders that maximize the mutual information (MI) between finite alphabet input and the corresponding output over the precoded MIMO channel, the proposed precoder aims to maximize the MI between the finite alphabet input and the corresponding output of the equalizer. The precoder is targeted for applications that require low complexity, where forward error correction (FEC) codes with low-complex encoding and decoding structures are used. Simulation results show the error-rate performance gain of the resulting precoder compared to two other reference precoders presented in the literature, which are derived from the maximization of the precoded MIMO channel MI. We study the design optimization of linear precoders that maximize the mutual information in complex-valued vector Gaussian channels under finite alphabet inputs. It is well known that mutual information of a vector channel with discrete constellation source is a highly nonlinear and non-concave function of the linear precoder matrix G, thereby complicating the precoder design optimization. In this paper, we show that the mutual information is a concave function of W velence G~(h)H~(h)HG, where H is the complex-valued channel matrix and superscript "h" represents conjugate transpose. We further propose an iterative algorithm for solving the globally optimal linear precoder G. Illustrative results show that the proposed iterative algorithm is very robust and efficient for global convergence.

This paper investigates linear precoding scheme that maximizes mutual information for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels with finite-alphabet inputs. In contrast with recent studies, optimizing mutual information directly with extensive computational burden, this work proposes a low-complexity and high-performance design. It derives a lower bound that demands low computational effort and approximates, with a constant shift, the mutual information for various settings. Based on this bound, the precoding problem is solved efficiently. Numerical examples show the efficacy of this method for constant and fading MIMO channels. Compared to its conventional counterparts, the proposed method reduces the computational complexity without performance loss.

The convex geometry of subchannel attenuation coefficients in linearly precoded OFDM systems

Channels with spectral nulls are sometimes dubbed bad channels because they can cause poor performance in communication systems. This correspondence investigates the validity of this intuition by studying the geometry of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) system. It Is shown that the subchannel attenuation coefficients form a natural coordinate system for describing finite-impulse response (FIR) channels in an OFDM framework. It is also shown that channels with spectral nulls are geometrically significant;they form the faces of the convex set of all subchannel attenuation coefficients. This novel perspective makes it immediately clear why the worst performance of a linearly precoded OFDM system is achieved over a channel having the greatest number of spectral nulls. The practical implications of these results are discussed in the correspondence.

MMSE-Based precoders for Cooperative MIMO Systems with Direct Link

We propose linear precoders which jointly minimize the mean-squared error of estimated symbol at the destination node for cooperative multiple-input multiple-output communication systems. Unlike the existing precoders which require high computational complexity to solve the optimization problem on the direct link, the proposed precoder is expressed in a closed-form. Simulation results show that the proposed precoder outperforms the existing precoders in the low SNR region. Moreover, we observe that the proposed iterative algorithm is not sensitive to the initial matrices.
