Base Station Cooperation for Confidential Broadcasting in Multi-Cell Networks

We design linear precoders that perform confidential broadcasting in multi-cell networks for two different forms of base station (BS) cooperation, namely, multi-cell processing (MCP) and coordinated beamforming (CBf). We consider a two-cell network where each cell consists of an N-antenna BS and K single-antenna users. For such a network, we design a linear precoder based on the regularized channel inversion (RCI) for the MCP and a linear precoder based on the generalized RCI for the CBf. For each form of BS cooperation, we derive new channel-independent expressions to approximate the secrecy sum rate achieved by the precoder in the large system regime where K, N -> infinity with a fixed ratio beta = K/N. Using these results, we determine the optimal regularization parameters of the RCI and the generalized RCI precoders that maximize the secrecy sum rate for the MCP and the CBf, respectively. We further propose power-reduction strategies that significantly increase the secrecy sum rate at high transmit signal-to-noise ratios when the network load is high. Our numerical results substantiate the derived expressions, verify the optimality of the determined optimal regularization parameters, and demonstrate the performance improvement offered by the proposed power-reduction strategies.

Minimum Euclidean Distance Based precoders for MIMO Systems Using Rectangular QAM Modulations

From the feedback of the channel state information (CSI), precoding techniques improve the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems by optimizing various criteria. In this correspondence, an efficient precoder that maximizes the minimum distance (d(min)) of two received vectors is studied. This criterion leads to a nondiagonal precoding scheme and allows achieving a full diversity order. However, the optimized solution for MIMO systems using a high-order QAM modulation is rather complex and changes for different constellations. Therefore, we propose herein a general form of minimum Euclidean distance based precoders for all rectangular QAM modulations. It is shown that the new solution optimizes the distance d(min) for small and large dispersive channels.

A Low-Complexity linear Precoding for MIMO Channels With Finite Constellation Inputs

This letter investigates linear precoding scheme that maximizes the mutual information (MI) of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with arbitrary input constellations. Since traditional precoding schemes which rely on the relationship between MI and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) are too time consuming, this letter first proposes a lower bound of MI with which the computational complexity can be significantly reduced compared with direct computation of MI, and we prove that the bound is asymptotically optimal with a constant shift. Based on this lower bound, a low-complexity precoding scheme is obtained. Numerical results verify the effectiveness and high-performance of the proposed precoding method compared with traditional precoding schemes.

In this letter, the design of lattice reduction (LR) algorithms specialized for improving the performance of a linear-precoded MIMO system is investigated. Conventionally, the lattice reduction algorithm required in such system is performed mostly by either the Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz (LLL) or the Seysen's algorithm (SA), which is designed to search for shorter or nearly-orthogonal bases of a lattice. In this letter, we show that additional performance gain can be further obtained by taking the mean-square-error (MSE) of the considered MIMO system into account. The computational complexity and the error rate achieved by the proposed algorithm is quantified and compared with the LLL and SA via numerical simulations.

This paper presents optimum MIMO precoder designs based on transmit and receive correlation matrices to maximize the ergodic channel capacily for both frequency-flat and frequency-selective fading channels. It is shown that the optimum MIMO precoder in a frequency-flat fading channel is an eigen beamformer with beams referred to the eigen-modes of the transmit correlation matrix. By using the multi-path representation of a frequency-selective fading channel, the corresponding optimum precoding structure is derived. For a frequency-selective fading channel that can be represented by L uncorrelated effective paths, the optimum precoding structure consists of P+L parallel eigen-beamformers. Simulation results show that the proposed precoders can improve the ergodic capacity of both frequency-flat and frequency-selective fading channels, especially for channels with high spatial correlation.

In this paper, the performance of multi-user Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems is evaluated in terms of SINR and capacity. We focus on the case of a downlink single-cell scenario where different precoders have been studied. Among the considered precoders, we range from different Grid of Beams (GoB) optimization approaches to linear precoders (e.g., matched filtering and zero forcing). This performance evaluation includes imperfect channel estimation, and is carried out over two realistic mmWave 5G propagation channels, which are simulated following either the measurement campaign done by New York University (NYU) or the 3GPP channel model. Our evaluation allows grasping knowledge on the precoding performance in mmWave realistic scenarios. The results highlight the good performance of GoB optimization approaches when a realistic channel model with directionality is adopted.

Multiuser Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) system is to serve a number of users simultaneously. Here the aim is performance enhancement of an MU-MIMO system in terms of capacity and bit error rate (BER). To enhance the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system particle swarm optimizer (PSO) combined with Block Diagonalization (BD) precoding technique. PSO algorithm employing on BER function of BD to minimizing BER of the system. The main advantage of PSO is that in case of the performance index cannot be formulated by simple equations it can find out the solution. Simulation results show that PSO-BD can achieve significantly superior BER performance than precoding technique over the different fading channel environment like Rayleigh, Rician, and Nakagami.

Fully-synchronous measurements of a massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) radio propagation channel are presented. We evaluate the ability of a massive MIMO system to spatially separate users located close to each other in line-of-sight (LOS) propagation conditions. The system consists of a base-station (BS) antenna array equipped with 64 dual-polarized antenna elements (128 ports) arranged in a cylindrical configuration, and eight single-antenna users. The users are confined to a five-meter diameter circle and move randomly at pedestrian speeds. The BS antenna array is located on top of a 20 m tall building and has LOS to the users. We examine user separability by studying singular value spread of the MU-MIMO channel matrix for several subsets of BS antenna array ports, along with sum-rate capacity and achievable sum-rates with both zero-forcing and matched-filtering linear precoders. We also analyze the performance of the user with the lowest rate. Finally, a comparison between the performance offered by the massive MIMO system and that of a conventional MU-MIMO system is provided. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of fully-synchronous dynamic measurements of a massive MIMO system. Our investigation shows that even users located close to each other in LOS propagation conditions can be spatially separated in a massive MIMO system.

Femtocell networking is a promising solution to improve the indoor coverage issue and enhance system throughput for next generation wireless networks. However, one of the main concerns to put through femtocells is the interference issue between macrocell and femtocell networks. In this paper, we consider femtocell uplink transmissions with dynamic interference from macrocell users. Without information exchange or subcarrier reallocation between femtocell and macrocell at any base station, we propose a precoded frequency division multiple access (P-FDMA) transmission with novel detectors to mitigate macrocell-to-femtocell uplink co-channel interference (MFU-CCI). It is shown that our design collects multipath diversity without estimating the interference channels and is robust to MFU-CCI. Simulation results validate our findings.

This paper investigates the linear precoding design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) with finite-alphabet inputs. Since the mutual information (MI) and its gradient-minimum mean-square error (MMSE) matrix lack closed-form solutions, traditional MI/MMSE based precoding scheme suffers from a prohibitive burden of computation. To address this problem, we first derive an asymptotically optimal lower bound of MI, which is more computationally efficient. Based on the lower hound, we derive a suboptimal precoding scheme that maximizes the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of MIMO MAC with finite-alphabet inputs. Furthermore, a low-complexity precoding algorithm is proposed to obtain the numerical results of precoding matrices. Numerical results confirm a higher efficiency of the proposed precoding scheme compared with traditional MI/MMSE based preceding strategies.
