In this study, the energy data transfer problem in a DC microgrid with multiple renewable powered base stations (BSs) is considered. These BSs can share the renewable generation among each other. The energy cooperation is optimised by the control unit. For effective energy cooperation, energy data needs to be transferred from BSs to the control unit with low latency and high reliability. For cellular enabled microgrid communication, the energy data exchange and cellular communication both use the same communication resources. Thus, there will be interference at the control unit and cellular user (CU), which degrades the reliability of energy data transfer. To solve this problem, a linear precoding technique is designed to minimise the mean square error of the desired messages at the control unit, BSs, and CU while the interferences are kept at a predefined level. For the designed precoders, the expressions of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio are formulated and the error performance is analysed. Numerical simulation has been performed to compare the considered precoding technique with other precoding techniques. The simulation results demonstrate that optimum precoding can improve the error performance at the control unit, BSs, and CU by 1, 5, and 3 dB, respectively.

We consider the single-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoder design problem for the doubly spatially correlated partially coherent Rayleigh fading channels with discrete inputs. The objective is to design a linear precoder to adapt to the degradation caused by the imperfect channel estimation at the receiver and the transmit-receive antenna correlation. The system is partially coherent so that the MIMO channel coefficients are estimated at the receiver and its error covariance matrix is fed back to the transmitter. We utilized the cutoff rate (CR) expression, an alternative to the mutual information (MI), and propose to use it as a design criterion to design the linear precoders. A linear precoder is obtained by numerically maximizing the CR with respect to the precoder matrix with a given average power constraint. Furthermore, the precoder matrix is decomposed using singular value decomposition (SVD) into the input shaping matrix, power loading matrix, and beamforming matrix. The beamforming matrix is found to coincide with the eigenvectors of the transmit correlation matrix. The power loading and input shaping matrices are solved numerically using the difference of convex (d.c.) functions programming algorithm and optimization under the unitary constraint, respectively. A 2-block alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to solve the input shaping matrix and power loading matrix iteratively. precoders are designed to be used in conjunction with two MIMO transmission schemes: the spatial multiplexing (SM) and space-time (ST) block transmission modes. The frame error rate (FER) and average MI are used as the performance metrics to validate the performance of the newly designed CR-precoders in comparison with the conventional no-precoding case and cutoff rate optimized partially coherent constellations (PCCs). Practical linear precoder design for finite alphabet multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with experiment validation

A low complexity precoding method is proposed for practical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Based on the two-step optimal precoder design algorithm that maximises the lower bound of the mutual information with finite-alphabet inputs, the proposed method simplifies the precoder design by fixing the right singular vectors of the precoder matrix, eliminating the iterative optimisation between the two steps, and discretising the search space of the power allocation vector. For a 4 x 4 channel, the computational complexity of the proposed precoder design is reduced to 3 and 6% of that required by the original two-step algorithm with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 8 phase-shift keying (8PSK), respectively. The proposed method achieves nearly the same mutual information as the two-step iterative algorithm for a large range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, especially for large MIMO size and/or high constellation systems. The proposed precoding design method is applied to a 2 x 2 MIMO-OFDM system with 2048 subcarriers by designing 1024 precoders for extended channel matrices of size 4 x 4. A transceiver test bed implements these precoding matrices in comparison with other existing precoding schemes. Indoor experiments are conducted for fixed-platform non-line-of-sight channels, and the data processing results show that the proposed precoding method achieves the lowest bit error rate compared with maximum diversity, classic water-filling and channel diagonalisation methods.

This paper investigates the linear precoder design that maximizes the average mutual information of multiple-input multiple-output channels with finite-alphabet inputs and statistical channel state information known at the transmitter. This linear precoder design is an important open problem and is extremely difficult to solve: First, average mutual information lacks closed-form expression and involves complicated computations;Second, the optimization problem over precoder is nonconcave. This study explores the solution to this problem and provides the following contributions: 1) A closed-form lower bound of average mutual information is derived. It achieves asymptotic optimality at low and high signal-to-noise ratio regions and, with a constant shift, offers an accurate approximation to the average mutual information;2) The optimal structure of the precoder is revealed, and a unified two-step iterative algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. Numerical examples show the convergence and the efficacy of the proposed algorithm. Compared to its conventional counterparts, the proposed linear precoding method provides a significant performance gain.

Spatial precoder design for space-time coded MIMO systems: based on fixed parameters of MIMO channels

In realistic channel environments the performance of space-time coded multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems is significantly reduced due to non-ideal antenna placement and non-isotropic scattering. In this paper, by exploiting the spatial dimension of a MIMO channel we introduce the novel idea of linear spatial precoding (or power-loading) based on fixed and known parameters of MIMO channels to ameliorate the effects of non-ideal antenna placement on the performance of coherent (channel is known at the receiver) and non-coherent (channel is un-known at the receiver) space-time codes. Antenna spacing and antenna placement (geometry) are considered as fixed parameters of MIMO channels, which are readily known at the transmitter. With this design, the precoder is fixed for fixed antenna placement and the transmitter does not require any feedback of channel state information (partial or full) from the receiver. We also derive precoding schemes to exploit non-isotropic scattering distribution parameters of the scattering channel to improve the performance of space-time codes applied on MIMO systems. However, these schemes require the receiver to estimate the non-isotropic parameters and feed them back to the transmitter. Closed form solutions for precoding schemes are presented for systems with up to three receive antennas. A generalized method is proposed for more than three receive antennas.

Two-Stage Precoding Method for the Finitely Large-Scale Antenna Systems

A simple matched-filter, which known as a promising precoder in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, would not achieve the multi-user MIMO downlink capacity when base station equipped with finitely large number of antennas, due to multi-user interference. In this paper, a two-stage precoder design method has been proposed to maximize the sum-rate of cell-edge users when base station equipped with finitely large number of antennas. In the first stage, a matched-filter precoder is adopted to exploit both beamforming gain and the dimensional reduction of effective channels. Then, we derive the second stage precoder that maximizes the sum-rate by minimizing the weighted mean-squared-error. Simulation results and analysis verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. A modified transceiver design method is also presented which provides desired robustness in the presence of channel uncertainty.

In this paper, we consider a multiuser Gaussian broadcast channel where the base station and the users both are equipped with multiple antennas. The problem of optimal zero-forcing (ZF) precoding design subject to sum power constraint is discussed. Block diagonalization (BD) is applied as the ZF precoding method. We consider two common optimization criteria: maximum throughput and maximal fairness, where by maximizing fairness we mean maximizing the minimum rate among all users [1]). Under these criteria, the structure of the optimal BD precoders is presented and analyzed. It is shown that the conventional BD precoding design with sum power constraint is indeed optimal under the throughput and fairness criteria.

We consider the problem of weighted sum rate optimization in a MIMO interfering multiple access channel (IMAC). We propose to jointly optimize the users' linear procoders as well as their base station (BS) associations. This approach enables the users to avoid congested BSs and can improve system performance as well as user fairness. We formulate the problem into a noncooperative game, and develop an algorithm that allows the players to distributedly reach the Nash Equilibrium (NE) of the game. We show that every NE of the game is a stationary solution of the weighted sum rate optimization problem, and propose an algorithm to compute the NE of the game. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs well in the presence of BS congestion.

This paper investigates the zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming transmit strategy in the multiple-antenna multiuser downlink systems. We consider the case of mobile users equipped with multiple antennas. Although the capacity of such systems can be achieved by dirty paper coding (DPC), DPC is extremely difficult and challenging to implement. Thus, simple but suboptimal linear beamforming techniques like ZF beamforming can be deployed. However, the number of users that can be served using this strategy is limited by the number of transmit antennas at the base station. The solution for this limitation is user selection (scheduling), which also exploits multiuser diversity. Therefore, user selection can be used to enhance the throughput of the system. Recently, it has been shown that ZF beamforming strategy with user selection is asymptotically optimal for a large number of users. In this paper, a semi-orthogonal user selection (SUS) algorithm is extended to the system with multiple-antenna mobile users. This algorithm aims to select users, which are semi-orthogonal. The optimal ZF beamforming matrices are obtained and it is shown that the optimal ZF beamforming throughput is related to the eigenvalues of the user channels. Therefore, SUS is aimed to select the proper group of users based on maximizing the channel eigenvalues and therefore improving the optimal ZF beamforming throughput of the system.
