Patients with severe physical disorders but who are cognitively intact find it difficult to communicate with the outside world. Researches on the brain-computer interface (BCI) are aimed to help such patients. This study analyzes the characteristics of brainwaves and classifies between "yes" and "no" responses when a subject thinks of a "yes" or "no" response to an auditory stimuli question. Experiment using auditory stimuli of the form of multiple-choice questions is performed. We discriminate between the activities of the brainwaves of the "yes" and "no" responses using the alpha power. Nineteen healthy subjects (7 females and 12 males), aged between 20 and 35 years, volunteered to participate in the experiments. In the experiment, for 17 out of 19 subjects (89.4%), the average alpha power for the "yes" response is greater than that for the "no" response. Also, Fisher's discriminant is performed to classify what the subject responses based on the average alpha power. 88.9% of original grouped cases (38 cases) and 83.3% of ungrouped cases (6 cases) are correctly classified.

Memory copies for bulk data transport incur large overheads due to CPU stalling, small register-size data movement, etc. Intel's I/O Acceleration Technology offers an asynchronous memory copy engine in kernel space which alleviates such overheads. In this paper, we propose a set of designs for asynchronous memory operations in user space for both single process (as an offloaded memcpy()) and lPC using the copy engine. We analyze our design based on overlap efficiency, performance and cache utilization. Our microbenchmark results show that using the copy engine for performing memory copies can achieve close to 87% overlap with computation. Further, the copy engine improves the copy latency of bulk memory data transfers by 50% and avoids cache pollution effects. With the emergence of multi-core architectures, the support for asynchronous memory operations holds a lot of promise in reducing the gap between the memory and processor performance.

Current speech, audio, and video coding and transmission systems are either analogue or digital, with a strong shift from analogue systems to digital systems during the last decades. We have combined both digital and analogue schemes for the benefit of saving transmission bandwidth, complexity, and of improving the achievable quality at any given signal-to-noise ratio on the channel. The combination is achieved by transmitting pseudo analogue samples of the unquantized residual signal of a linear predictive digital filter which is called mixed pseudo analogue-digital (MAD) transmission. In this paper a new modulation scheme based on QPSK for digital information and an Archimedes spiral for the time discrete, pseudo analogue residual signal is introduced and evaluated.

The temporal characteristics of human inductive strength judgment process have not been previously investigated, although some preliminary spatial localization results have been reported. In the present study, some Chinese verbal inductive reasoning tasks are used in ERP (event related potentials) experiments to explore the time course of inductive strength judgment. The experimental results confirm our expectation. Inductive strength judgment after the presentation of a conclusion mainly contains three stages: visual encoding, semantic information integration, and strength evaluation. It can be tentatively concluded that visual encoding may be observed at the frontal P200 and the posterior N200, and the frontal LNC and the posterior LPC may reflect semantic information integration, and the slow waves after about 650ms may relate to strength evaluation process.

The transition from a conventional delivery system to a suitable robust distribution system is emerging to adapt with different possible scenarios of future development. This paper gives a particular vision of future grid with its main requirements. An investigation of suitable concepts and technologies which draw out attentions at the present has been carried out. They are discussed regarding mentioned requirements of sustainability, efficiency, flexibility and intelligence. Active network is then introduced as the backbone of the future power delivery system. Besides, multi- agent system (MAS) is described as a potential technology to cope with anticipated challenges of future grid operation. The research described is under the framework of the Electricity Infrastructure of the Future (EIT) project carried out by cooperation of TU/e, KEMA and ECN (***).

In this paper, a new scheme for the estimation of formant frequencies of noise-corrupted speech signals is presented. A once-repeated autocorrelation function (ORACF) of the observed noisy speech signal is proposed to employ in a linear predictive based formant estimation method. It has been shown that the ORACF is capable of reducing the effect of additive noise significantly and if, instead of conventional ACF, ORACF is used in a modified form of least-squares Yule-Walker equations, a better performance in the formant estimation is achieved. Moreover, a frequency-domain algorithm is incorporated in the proposed scheme to avoid the possible estimation error in extracting a formant with low energy. The proposed algorithm has been tested on synthetic and natural vowels as well as some naturally spoken sentences in the presence of additive noise. The experimental results demonstrate a better performance obtained by the proposed scheme in comparison to some of the existing methods at low levels of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

In this paper, the improved linear predictive coding (LPC) coefficients of the frame are employed in the feature extraction method. In the proposed speech recognition system, the static LPC coefficients + dynamic LPC coefficients of the frame were employed as a basic feature. The framework of linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is used to derive an efficient and reduced-dimension speech parametric speech vector space for the speech recognition system. Using the continuous hidden Markov model (HMM) as the speech recognition model, the speech recognition system was successfully constructed. Experiments are performed on the isolated-word speech recognition task. It is found that the improved LPC feature extraction method is quite efficient.

Line Spectrum Pairs (LSP) representation of linear predictive coding coefficients is widely used in speech coding, speech recognition and other domains due to its desirable interpolation and quantization properties. Several methods proposed for calculating LSP parameters have been complicated by high computation complexity. This paper proposed an effective and efficient algorithm APF using Aitken iterative method and polynomial synthesis division. LSP parameters were estimated by obtaining a root of N-order nonlinear equation by Aitken iterative method at first, then decreasing degrees with polynomial, synthesis division, and finally calculating quartic equation using Ferrari solution. Theoretic analysis and experiment results show that the proposed algorithm has not only high precision but also low calculation complexity.

Correlation between snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been studied over the past years using techniques such as sound intensity computation, power spectrum estimation, counting of snores, and more recently, pitch and jitter analysis. Although these studies have ascertained the relationship between snoring and OSA, they gave mixed outcomes in diagnosing OSA. In this paper, snore signals are analyzed using linear predictive coding (LPC), which is a powerful speech analytic tool. The noisy snore signals were first preprocessed using a Modified Normalized Least-Mean-Square (MNLMS) adaptive filter for noise cancellation, followed by the extraction of formant structures from the denoised snore signals to discriminate between benign and apneic snores. This initial study demonstrates that the formant structures of snore signals contain useful information for OSA detection, and suggests the feasibility of using snore signal analysis as a noninvasive and inexpensive diagnostic tool for mass screening of OSA.
