European Union farming systems: Insights for a more sustainable land use

The diversity of agricultural systems in European Union (EU) regions and countries is vast and vulnerable to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reforms. The CAP instruments have suffered several significant changes over the last decades to take into account the new contexts from the various EU enlargements and problems caused by former measures. This dynamic evolution of the farming system calls for updated assessment to better understand the respective policy impacts and to support the design of new and adjusted instruments. In this context, with this research, the intention is to highlight the most recent characteristics of the EU farming system and to assess the respective impacts from CAP measures. To achieve these aims, we considered statistical information from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) which was exploited through linear programming models. The main findings reveal that EU subsidies have no implication on the structure of EU farming systems. In other words, the most profitable farming systems are the same whether they were provided with the CAP financial support or not, namely those from the 1st Pillar. On the other hand, the CAP rules condition the farmers' options, sometimes towards adopting a more subsidised production, but with lower margins. These frameworks would not be problematic, if the farming systems were more socially and environmentally sustainable, but this is not always the case. In a future scenario of a farming sector which more regulated by the market and less so by the CAP instruments, the environmental impacts will be more short-term than medium- or long-term, where the main problem will be with energy consumption.

For the study of the complex interconnections in an IoT-driven world, an engineering case was developed to teach engineering students the interrelations and requirements for a robust, controlled and secured system incorporating all challenges of the modern IoT-system. As a case the charging problem for electric batteries (as for electric cars) was explored, both from the client (user at the loadstation) side as from the delivery side (service provider).

A programming model and foundation for lineage-based distributed computation

The most successful systems for "big data" processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model, we call function passing, designed to provide a more principled substrate, or middleware, upon which to build data-centric distributed systems like Spark. A key idea is to build up a persistent functional data structure representing transformations on distributed immutable data by passing well-typed serializable functions over the wire and applying them to this distributed data. Thus, the function passing model can be thought of as a persistent functional data structure that is distributed, where transformations performed on distributed data are stored in its nodes rather than the distributed data itself. One advantage of this model is that failure recovery is simplified by design - data can be recovered by replaying function applications atop immutable data loaded from stable storage. Deferred evaluation is also central to our model;by incorporating deferred evaluation into our design only at the point of initiating network communication, the function passing model remains easy to reason about while remaining efficient in time and memory. Moreover, we provide a complete formalization of the programming model in order to study the foundations of lineage-based distributed computation. In particular, we develop a theory of safe, mobile lineages based on a subject reduction theorem for a typed core language. Furthermore, we formalize a progress theorem that guarantees the finite materialization of remote, lineage-based data. Thus, the formal model may serve as a basis for further developments of the theory of data-centric distributed programming, including aspects such as fault tolerance. We provide an open-source implementation of our model in and for the Scala programming language, along with a case study of several example frameworks and end-user programs written atop this model.

The problem of geometric programming subject to max-product fuzzy relation constraints with discrete variables is studied. The major difficulty in solving this problem comes from nonconvexity caused by these product terms in the general geometric function and the max-product relation constraints. We proposed a 0-1 mixed integer linear programming model and adopted the branch-and-bound scheme to solve the problem. Numerical experiments confirm that the proposed solution method is effective.

The berth allocation problem (BAP) in marine container terminals is defined as the feasible berth allocation to the incoming vessels. In this work, we develop a model of fully fuzzy linear programming (FFLP) for the continuous and dynamic BAP. The vessel arrival times are assumed to be imprecise, meaning that the vessel can be late or early up to a threshold permitted. Triangular fuzzy numbers represent the uncertainty of the arrivals. The model proposed has been implemented in CPLEX and evaluated for different instances. The results obtained show that the model proposed is helpful to the administrators of a marine container terminal, since a plan supporting imprecision in the arrival time of vessels, optimized with respect to the waiting time and easily adaptable to possible incidents and delays, is available to them.

In this paper, wepresent specification, design and implementation aspects of a network resource provisioning module introduced for the Polish Initiative of Future Internet called System IIP. In particular, we propose a set of novel LP optimization models of network resource provisioning designed to minimize the network resource consumption, either bandwidth or node's computational power, as well as to maximize the residual capacity. Next, we analyze characteristics of the proposed models, outline the most important implementation aspects of our network resource provisioning module, as well as the issues of integration of this module with the respective network management module of System IIP.

Improved affine arithmetic based optimisation model for interval power flow analysis

Power flow (PF) problem need to be further studied when confronted with uncertainties brought in by the increasing use of renewable energy. This study proposes a new solution method based on linear approximation of the affine arithmetic (AA) based PF model and optimal solution technique incorporated with boundary load flow framework under generation and load data uncertainties. In each iteration solution step, non-linear interval PF problem is modelled by the approximation technique with AA. Boundaries of state variables are explored by solving linear programming models with constraints reformed at given operating points. After optimisation process, new operating point is obtained and updated for further iteration solution step. Application of the proposed methodology is implemented in several IEEE benchmark test systems and results are demonstrated in details. Comparisons between the previous interval method and Monte Carlo simulations verify the effectiveness and better performance of the proposed method.

Minimizing operators’ walking times into a linear system layout

This paper deals with the assignment of stations to operators into flexible manufacturing systems by minimizing the operators’ walking times over a given planning horizon. The manufacturing system is supposed to present a linear layout where the stations are aligned along a longitudinal axis. Stations are flexible (so that different jobs can be scheduled on the same station along the planning horizon) and may differ from each other in terms of degree of automation and, consequently, in terms of amount of human labor involved. Thus, two or more stations might share the same operator within the working shift and, consequently, the assignment of the optimal subset of stations to each operator is anything but trivial. Hence, a mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed which takes into account (and minimizes) the travel walking distances of the operators according to the assigned subset of stations. Other realistic constraints, such as the actual availability of the operators and the requirement stating that each scheduled job has to be assigned to a single operator for its entire duration, are included in the model. The validity of the model is proved by discussing a real-world case study from the plastic industry. © 2016

Direct seeding mulch-based cropping (DMC) systems are often considered as an efficient way of combining ecological sustainability and economic viability while maintaining or increasing agricultural productivity. This paper describes a modelling analysis of the functioning of family farms in rural settlements of the agrarian reform in the Cerrados of Brazil. The aim was to assess the impact of the introduction of DMC systems with and without cover crops on crop-livestock management and net household income. A bio-economic farm model based on optimization of a utility function under multiple constraints was developed, capturing the interactions between livestock activities and the introduction of DMC systems. The model was run for six farms representing three farm types in the study area: 1) subsistence-oriented mixed crop-livestock farms;2) market-oriented dairy farms;and 3) mixed crop-livestock farms, oriented to meat marketing. The following maize-based DMC systems were evaluated: a DMC system with mulch from residues of the previous maize crop and no cover crop, and two DMC systems with a fodder species, Brachiaria brizanta or Cajanus cajan, as cover crop. The simulated adoptability of DMC systems by farmers of the assentamentos depended to a large extent on the yields and feed quality of the fodder species. The modelling results suggested that DMC with C cajan as cover crop was the best suitable option for all simulated farm types. This was mainly explained by its high feed value (expressed in crude protein content). Furthermore, in the process of intensification and specialization in dairy production, farmers were likely to shift from using maize for pig husbandry to feeding it to the dairy cows. The introduction of cover crops in the farm systems was a source of additional animal feed during the dry season that was cheaper than the purchase of feed concentrates, when the size of the dairy herd did not exceed a certain threshold.
