Optimized Asynchronous Multichannel Discovery of IEEE 802.15.4-Based Wireless Personal Area Networks

Network discovery is a fundamental task in different scenarios of IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless personal area networks. Scenario examples are body sensor networks requiring health- and wellness-related patient monitoring or situations requiring opportunistic message propagation. In this paper, we investigate optimized discovery of IEEE 802.15.4 static and mobile networks operating in multiple frequency bands and with different beacon intervals. We present a linear programming model that allows finding two optimized strategies, named OPT and SWOPT, to deal with the asynchronous and multichannel discovery problem. We also propose a simplified discovery solution, named SUBOPT, featuring a low-complexity algorithm requiring less memory usage. A cross validation between analytical, simulation, and experimental evaluation methods is performed. Finally, a more detailed simulation-based evaluation is presented, when considering varying sets of parameters (i.e., number of channels, network density, beacon intervals, etc.) and using static and mobile scenarios. The performance studies confirm improvements achieved by our solutions in terms of first, average, and last discovery time as well as discovery ratio, when compared to IEEE 802.15.4 standard approach and the SWEEP approach known from the literature.

A Distributed Method of Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) Based on Dual Decomposition for Interference-Limited Cellular Networks

In this paper we present a novel distributed Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) scheme for interference-limited heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNet). We reformulate our problem in such a way that it can be decomposed into a number of small sub-problems, which can be solved independently through an iterative subgradient method. The proposed dual decomposition method can also address problems with binary-valued variables. The proposed algorithm is compared with some reference schemes in terms of cell-edge and total cell throughput.

An LP Approach for Solving Two-Player Zero-Sum Repeated Bayesian Games

This paper studies two-player zero-sum repeated Bayesian games in which every player has a private type that is unknown to the other player, and the initial probability of the type of every player is publicly known. The types of players are independently chosen according to the initial probabilities, and are kept the same all through the game. At every stage, players simultaneously choose actions, and announce their actions publicly. For finite horizon cases, an explicit linear program is provided to compute players' security strategies. Moreover, this paper shows that a player's sufficient statistics, which is independent of the strategy of the other player, consists of the belief over the player's own type, the regret over the other player's type, and the stage. Explicit linear programs, whose size is linear in the size of the game tree, are provided to compute the initial regrets, and the security strategies that only depends on the sufficient statistics. For discounted cases, following the same idea in the finite horizon, this paper shows that a player's sufficient statistics consists of the belief of the player's own type and the antidiscounted regret with respect to the other player's type. Besides, an approximated security strategy depending on the sufficient statistics is provided, and an explicit linear program to compute the approximated security strategy is given. This paper also obtains a bound on the performance difference between the approximated security strategy and the security strategy, and shows that the bound converges to 0 exponentially fast.

Purpose: To develop a new optimization algorithm to carry out true dose painting by numbers (DPBN) planning based on full Monte Carlo (MC) calculation. Methods: Four configurations with different clustering of the voxel values from PET data were proposed. An optimization method at the voxel level under Lineal programming (LP) formulation was used for an inverse planning and implemented in CARMEN, an in-house Monte Carlo treatment planning system. Results: Beamlet solutions fulfilled the objectives and did not show significant differences between the different configurations. More differences were observed between the segment solutions. The plan for the dose prescription map without clustering was the better solution. Conclusions: LP optimization at voxel level without dose-volume restrictions can carry out true DPBN planning with the MC accuracy. (C) 2017 Associazione Italiana di Fisica Medica. Optimal Power and Battery Storage Dispatch Architecture for Microgrids: Implementation in a Campus Microgrid

The expansion of electric microgrids has led to the incorporation of new elements and technologies into the power grids, carrying power management challenges and the need of a well-designed control architecture to provide efficient and economic access to electricity. This paper presents the development of a flexible hourly day-ahead power dispatch architecture for distributed energy resources in microgrids, with cost-based or demand-based operation, built up in a multi-class Python environment with SQLExpress and InfluxDB databases storing the dispatcher and microgrid data, and its experimental implementation using Modbus communication. The experimental power dispatch architecture is described and each operation stage is detailed, including the considered mathematical models of the energy resources, the database management, the linear-programming optimization of power dispatch, and the Modbus setpoint writing. Validation studies of the proposed control system are presented for real-time digital-simulated devices and physical resources as a real application at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) campus microgrid. The simulated and physical microgrid characteristics are described and the hourly dispatch results for generation, storage and load devices are presented, standing out as a reliable power management architecture for economic commitment and load peak shaving in simulated and real microgrids. The proposed architecture demonstrates its readiness for present and future electrical system challenges, effectively incorporating meteorological variations, renewable energy sources, and power demand fluctuations into the control framework, with a strong dependence on the quality of the meteorological forecast.

Energy management system (EMS) and energy storage system (ESS) can be of great significance to coping with issues of microgrid. In this paper, a microgrid consists of variable load, stable load, photovoltaic generation and battery storage system. It's an effective way to make most of solar power. The microgrid with EMS and ESS can not only help reduce the emission of carbon dioxide but make the cost less than before. So the main goal of the article is to minimize the residental electricity cost and store the solar power when the weather is sunny. Two weather-based scenarios are formulated to deal with the photovoltaic generation (PVG) and ESS. linear optimization programming (LOP) is applied in this paper to address the issue of saving electricity cost and make renewable energy sources (RESs).

Internet era in the context of increasing popularity of mobile terminals, network video browsing has become an indispensable feature of wireless terminals. However, in order to improve the reliability of video multicast, this paper increases the gain system from the overlapping access points in the coverage area, because of the low reliability of the inter-link interference between the wireless networks. Improve the fairness of the system, and propose and design a multi-point broadcast scheme based on network coding and multi-access point collaboration. The program will first divide each video segment into the same segment and divide the access point completely and not completely interfere with the two models. The video multicast problem when the transmission range between the access points is overlapped is modeled as linear programming optimization problem, a two-stage heuristic algorithm is designed to solve the problem. By using multiple access points to get the gain of space and time diversity, the reliability of data transmission is improved, and data is transmitted in parallel by allowing access points that interfere with, To improve the system utility. Finally, the simulation experiment is used to verify the validity of the number of packets to be decoded, the total amount of packets received and the fairness.

In this paper, a novel class-specific guided local feature selection (CSGLFS) model is proposed, which derives that each area of the high-dimensional data is related to its own unique discriminant feature subset. This algorithm is superior to existing methods which simply applies a common global feature subset to represent all classes in the high-dimensional input data. In the proposed way, the feature subsets take into account local changes, which optimally adjust to the specific region of high-dimensional space. We also give a linked scheme to measure the similarity between query data and each of the specific classes. Moreover, our CSGLFS method is effectively expressed as a linear programming problem. Experimental results on six public datasets prove that our proposed algorithm is capable to obtain meaningful results compared to existing well-known and advanced feature selection algorithms in terms of classification problem.

Battery energy storage in utility-scale transmission grids provides the benefit of fast response, however, efficient battery control in multi-battery multi-bus systems can be challenging. We present here a battery operation strategy based on forecasted load and line ampacity. The forecasted load is serviced via conventional generators in combination with battery energy storage whose outputs are computed using non-linear programming with the objective of minimizing total battery charging and discharging. The operating strategy takes into account battery degradation, line outages, and dynamic line rating. The forecasting model is based on attention convolutional neural network architecture with bidirectional long-short term memory layers forecasting over the range calculated using the sliding windows. The strategy is tested on 24-bus reliability test system and is shown to be effective at predicting battery action.

This paper proposes a solution to maximize the power efficiency, i.e. datarate per power unit, in a heterogeneous wireless system that is based on integrated mobile base stations (BSs) and Wi-Fi access points (APs). In this context, a user association and downlink resource allocation optimization problem is formulated. The formulated problem considers the power consumption at both networks and mobile terminals (MTs), and the data rate requirement, i.e. load, of each MT. Since MTs could only be associated with a single network at a time, the formulated problem is binary with high complexity. Thus, a new sub-optimal solution with polynomial-time complexity is proposed based on the continuous relaxation of the problem. Simulation results show that the proposed sub-optimal solution, when compared to the trivial network selection methodology, remarkably reduces the power consumption of networks and MTs. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed solution performs close to the optimal one.
