Traditional wireless sensor network(WSN) localization research only focused on heterogeneity of the beacons (nodes with known locations) and unknown nodes(nodes with unknown locations).But in practical application,except for heterogeneity of the beacons and unknown nodes,heterogeneity exists in both beacons in-group and unknown nodes *** view of this,this paper presents a hybrid localization algorithm. The hybrid localization algorithm can make the best of network *** results show that compared with the traditional WSN localization algorithms,the hybrid localization algorithm has the superiorities of accuracy and the rate of beacons in heterogeneous WSNs.

Implementation of a PSO Based Improved localization Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are broadly employed in lots of applications. WSN is comprised of spatially dispersed sovereign devices enabled with sensors to examine some physical phenomenon. The node localization, which is to be responsive of nodes' location in the system, is a crucial component of numerous WSN functions and applications. Various localization algorithms have been proposed to precisely locate nodes in WSNs. The localization algorithms are normally categorized into range-based and range-free schemes based on range measurements. The range-based methods use exact computation measure (distance or time) among nodes in the network. So range-based methods need some additional hardware for such computation, thus expensive to be used in practice. Because of hardware constraints of sensor network devices, range-free methods are considered cost efficient alternatives. Though, these methods normally contain higher localization error in comparison with range-based methods. DV-Hop is an usual range-free method that use hop-based evaluation. In this article, we have modified DV-Hop method and applied a meta-heuristic (PSO) technique to overcome the positioning error. The algorithm has been implemented in MATLAB R2015a for the validation of results. The performance of implemented algorithm has been analyzed in terms of localization error, error variance, accuracy, and coverage. The results of modified algorithm confirm that our algorithm decreases the localization error and improved the localization accuracy as compared to DV-Hop and improved DV-Hop (IDV-Hop) algorithms.

Magnetic Induction-Based localization in Randomly Deployed Wireless Underground Sensor Networks

Wireless underground sensor networks enable many applications, such as mine and tunnel disaster prevention, oil upstream monitoring, earthquake prediction and landslide detection, and intelligent farming and irrigation among many others. Most applications are location-dependent, so they require precise sensor positions. However, classical localization solutions based on the propagation properties of electromagnetic waves do not function well in underground environments. This paper proposes a magnetic induction (MI)-based localization that accurately and efficiently locates randomly deployed sensors in underground environments by leveraging the multipath fading free nature of MI signals. Specifically, the MI-based localization framework is first proposed based on underground MI channel modeling with additive white Gaussian noise, the designated error function, and semidefinite programming relaxation. Next, this paper proposes a two-step positioning mechanism for obtaining fast and accurate localization results by: first, developing the fast-initial positioning through an alternating direction augmented Lagrangian method for rough sensor locations within a short processing time, and then proposing fine-grained positioning for performing powerful search for optimal location estimations via the conjugate gradient algorithm. Simulations confirm that our solution yields accurate sensor locations with both low and high noise and reveals the fundamental impact of underground environments on the localization performance.

localization and sensing for hopping robots

This paper describes the state of the art of hopping robots for space exploration and new conceptual advances in algorithms for localization and sensing of hopping robots. We first review the state of the art of hopping robot systems and describe their characteristics with reference to past and current space missions. Then, we briefly summarize the operational principles of minimally actuated jumping robots that are suitable for exploring the unstructured terrain of celestial bodies. These principles are supported by the description of some of the key mechanisms implemented, and by laboratory tests. Then, a new localization algorithm for hopping localization that fuses camera, inertial and acceleration data to compute the most likely landing location of the robot is proposed. To support localization with geo-referenced measures, we also briefly propose a new stereo system, based on omnidirectional cameras, whose physical characteristics are well suited for a hopping robot. Computer simulations of the localization algorithm, together with preliminary geometrical analysis of the proposed stereo system, support our claims of their applicability to planetary exploration. Conclusions and plans for future development end the paper.

Large scale metrology refers to dimensional measurement of objects or features of perhaps a ten of meters or more in size. Alternatively, large scale metrology could be said to apply to any dimensional measurement where the metrology instrument has to be brought to the object rather than vice versa. Recent approaches seem to turn their attention towards distributed metrology systems made of multiple components with small dimensions spread around the measuring area. In general, these components are able to form a wireless network of sensors that allows rapid dimensional measurements to be performed in relation to large-size objects, with typical dimensions of several decametres. The portability, flexibility, and ease of installation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) make these systems attractive for many industries manufacturing large scale products. This paper proposes different WSN localization procedures designed for the mobile spatial coordinate measuring system, a distributed metrology system developed at the industrial metrology and quality laboratory of DISPEA-Politecnico di Torino.

Weighted Hyperbolic DV-Hop Positioning Node localization Algorithm in WSNs

The localization of nodes plays a fundamental role in Wireless Sensor and Actors Networks (WSAN) identifying geographically where an event occurred, which facilitates timely response to this action. This article presents a performance evaluation of multi-hop localization range-free algorithms used in WSAN, such as Distance Vector Hop (DV-Hop), Improved DV-Hop (IDV-Hop), and the Weighted DV-Hop (WDV-Hop). In addition, we propose a new localization algorithm, merging WDV-Hop, with the weighted hyperbolic localization algorithm (WH), which includes weights to the correlation matrix of the estimated distances between the node of interest (NOI) and the reference nodes (RN) in order to improve accuracy and precision. As performance metrics, the accuracy, precision, and computational complexity are evaluated. The algorithms are evaluated in three scenarios where all nodes are randomly distributed in a given area, varying the number of RNs, the density of nodes in the network, and radio coverage of the nodes. The results show that in networks with 100 nodes, WDV-Hop outperforms the DV-Hop and IDV-Hop even if the number of RNs is reduced to 10. Moreover, our proposal shows an improvement in terms of accuracy and precision at the cost of increased computational complexity, specifically in the algorithm execution time, but without affecting the hardware cost or power consumption.

A localization algorithm for railway vehicles based on sensor fusion between tachometers and inertial measurement units

The availability of a reliable speed and travelled distance estimation is relevant for the efficiency and safety of automatic train protection and control systems. This paper investigates the main features of an innovative localization algorithm that integrates tachometers and inertial measurement units. Nowadays, the estimation is performed by an odometry algorithm that relies on wheel angular speed sensors. The objective is to increase the accuracy of the odometric estimation, especially in critical adhesion conditions, through sensor fusion techniques based on Kalman filter theory. The Italian company ECM S.p.A. has supported the project, providing a custom inertial measurement unit based on micro electro-mechanical system sensors for the on-track testing of the algorithm. The preliminary results show a significant improvement of the position and speed estimation performances compared to those obtained with SCMT (Italian acronym for Sistema Controllo Marcia Treno') algorithms, currently in use on the Italian railway network. A wide set of simulated test results, showing the improvement of the estimation process, is presented and discussed. An accurate train navigation that scarcely relies on information from the infrastructure will open a road map for the development of a more and more effective and efficient exploitation of the railway infrastructure.

The exploration of underwater surfaces and their monitoring has become an emerging field of interest for many researchers. localization is a crucial task in the Underwater Wireless Sensor Network (UWSN). In comparison to terrestrial sensor nodes, localizing underwater sensor nodes is more difficult. In UWSN, the communication of signals between the nodes is a challenging task due to acoustic communication and the position of the node tends to move due to a strong water current in the deep sea whereas in terrestrial the nodes are static and the localization of the node is comparatively easier. Strategic surveillance relies on accurate localization in UWSN to follow underwater assets and activities. Addressing localization issues improves situational awareness, disaster response, and mitigation in crucial areas. We reviewed Range-Based and Range-Free UWSN localization algorithms from numerous research articles and discussed trade-offs and improvement opportunities. The comparative analysis was made based on various parameters like coverage area, density of node in the network, energy consumption, localization error and computational complexity. The performance comparison helps the researchers to decide the best localization algorithm or to improve the available algorithm for UWSN. © 2024 The Author(s)

RF localization science and technology started with the global positioning systems for outdoor areas, and it then transformed into wireless indoor geolocation. The next step in the evolution of this science is the transformation into RF localization inside the human body. The first major application for this technology is the localization of the wireless video capsule endoscope (VCE) that has been in the clinical arena for 12 years. While physicians can receive clear images of abnormalities in the gastrointestinal tract with VCE devices, they have little idea of their exact location inside the GI tract. To localize intestinal abnormalities, physicians routinely use radiological, endoscopic or surgical operations. If we could use the RF signal radiated from the capsule to also locate these devices, not only can physicians discover medical problems, but they can also learn where the problems are located. However, finding a realistic RF localization solution for the endoscopy capsule is a very challenging task, because the inside of the human body is a difficult environment for experimentation and visualization. In addition, we have no-idea how the capsule moves and rotates in its 3D journey in this non-homogeneous medium for radio propagation. In this paper, we describe how we can design a cyber physical system (CPS) for experimental testing and visualization of interior of the human body that can be used for solving the RF localization problem for the endoscopy capsule. We also address the scientific challenges that face and the appropriate technical approaches for solving this problem.

The design, development, and deployment of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) localization systems involves digital and Radio-Frequency (RF) hardware, embedded software, localization algorithms, security and reliability aspects, electromagnetics, and others. Design and integration decisions affect the performance of an UWB system, in particular the most important metrics: localization accuracy and position update rate. To facilitate further development of UWB localization systems and to analyze some of the major trade-offs we share our experience in deploying the EPFL UWB-Lite test bed (U-LITE). We describe an approach to numerical simulation modeling that can help in the design and evaluation of UWB localization systems. To validate our approach we show experimental results with one transmitter and one receiver. Our UWB test bed includes a mobile robot platform, so we can study and evaluate the UWB performance trade-offs in real-world conditions.
