An accurate localization algorithm tailored for anisotropic wireless sensors networks (WSN)s is proposed in this paper. Using the proposed algorithm, each regular or position-unaware node estimates its distances only to reliable anchors or position-aware nodes. The latter are properly chosen following a new reliable anchor selection strategy that ensures an accurate distance estimation making thereby our localization algorithm more precise. Simulations show that our algorithm, consistently outperforms the best representative localization algorithms currently available in the literature in terms of accuracy, even with the presence of non-uniform node distribution or radiation irregularities.

The growing number of mobile devices and the popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) applications have caused an increase of local-area location-aware protocols and applications. localization has become a popular topic in the literature and many localization algorithms in wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been proposed. However, the most of them are vulnerable to common wireless attacks. In this article, we introduce the secure localization protocol based on a RSSI-mapping, which uses symmetric cryptography. The security attributes of the protocol have been proved using the Scyther tool. We present the experimental results that demonstrate the ability to estimate sensor's location in the environment, where other networks are available. The results show, that the introduction of security mechanisms to localization protocols may significantly increase the execution time and exceed strict time restrictions in some real-time applications. Nevertheless, the existence of insecure protocol in hostile environment is unacceptable. To achieve a better efficiency, we suggest to use the hardware encryption provided in CC2420 radio chip.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) localization technique remains an open research issue due to its challenges on reducing location estimation error and cost of localization algorithm itself. For a large mobile network localization cost becomes increasingly important due to the exponential increment of algorithmic cost. Conversely, sacrificing localization accuracy to a great extent is not acceptable at all. To address the localization problem of wireless sensor network this paper presents a novel algorithm based on cross-entropy (CE) method. The proposed centralized algorithm estimates location information of the nodes based on the measured distances of the neighboring nodes. The algorithm minimizes the estimated location error by using CE method. Simulation results compare the proposed CE approach with DV-Hop and simulated annealing (SA)-based localizations and show that this approach provides a balance between the accuracy and cost.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has acquired a well-known significance in the domain of sensor networks due to the advancement in past decade by the introduction of Internet of Things (IoT). WSNs comprises of sensor and the basic purpose of sensor is to collect, analyze and transmit the information to the target node/sensor. Therefore, it is necessary to identify target area of sensor node. In WSNs, it is achieved through applications of various algorithms and techniques known as localization techniques. These localization approaches help in determining the actual geographical location of sensor nodes. The main focus of this paper is to provide a comparative study of different localization techniques used in WSNs. This paper significantly helps the students, researchers and practitioners in this domain for selecting right localization technique as per the given WSNs requirements.

Recent developments in micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) technology and wireless communication have propelled the growing applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Wireless sensor network is comprised of large number of small and cheap devices known as sensors. One of the important functions of sensor network is collection and forwarding of data. In most of the applications, it is of much interest to find out the location of the data. This type of information can be obtained by use of localization techniques. So node localization is very crucial to find out the position of node with the help of localization algorithms. Hence, node localization becomes one of the fundamental challenges in WSNs. We make the rigorous reviews on different schemes of localization in sensor networks. On the basis of range measurements, the localization schemes can be broadly classified in two categories such as: range based and range free schemes. The cost and hardware limitation on sensing node preclude the use of range based localization schemes. In most of the sensor network application coarse accuracy is sufficient so range free localization schemes are considered as a substitute to range based schemes. In this paper, the detailed study has been carried out to understand and select the best range free localization algorithm for WSNs. At the end some issues are discussed for future research in the area of localization techniques for WSNs. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Sensor location plays an important role in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), so that developing sensor localization algorithms has gained much attention from both academia and industries. Among existing solutions, range-free localization algorithms, including the well-known DV-Hop algorithm, are a promising one due to its independence of any dedicated hardware, but usually suffer from low accuracy and high energy consumptions. In this paper, a novel localization algorithm based on the DV-Hop algorithm is proposed by trading off the overall energy consumption and localization accuracy. Unlike the traditional DV-Hop algorithm, the proposed algorithm replaces the stationary TTL-based mechanism by a dynamic and distributed mechanism. Specifically, provided that a new packet with TTL = 0 arrives, the current sensor will evaluate a coarse goodness value based on the Fisher Information Matrix (FIM), and then determines whether it is necessary to forward this packet to its neighboring sensors which are distant from the source anchor flooding this packet. As a result, the packets transmitted are significantly reduced, but the localization accuracy is not evidently degraded. To validate the proposed algorithm, simulations are conducted and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly decreases network communications by an average of 25.71% and 55% compared to the traditional DV-Hop algorithm and the existing improved DV-Hop algorithms, respectively.

In this paper, a novel localization algorithm tailored for underground mines is proposed. Using the proposed algorithm, each regular (i.e position-unaware) node estimates its distances to the anchor (i.e., position-aware) nodes exploiting only its locally available information. Furthermore, a new hop count adjustment scheme, which complies with the labyrinthic nature of underground mines, is developed to ensure an accurate distance estimation, thereby making our localization algorithm more precise. Simulations show that our proposed algorithm, consistently outperforms in underground mines the best representative localization algorithms currently available in the literature in terms of accuracy, even with the presence of radiation irregularities.

In this paper, a non-statistical MATLAB-based software model for a bounded shallow underwater acoustic network comprising an arbitrary number of transmitters, receivers and the water channel is presented. The model is constructed to highlight the non-ideal behavior of the underwater channel including attenuation, reflections, multipath effects, noise and phase-frequency shifts. To highlight the utility of the model, a Time-Difference-Of-Arrival (TDOA) algorithm to locate an underwater sound source using a hydrophone array is tested on the model and the received signals are observed to show realistic results as if they have actually propagated through the water channel. Such a network model can be used to test localization algorithms for any acoustic source, without the need to gather real data in the specific water reservoir.
