Direction of arrival (DoA) estimation in the massive antenna systems with reduced hardware and signal processing complexity is a challenging task. To address the issue, this paper presents an approach to estimate the DoA in a large number of antennas system combined with an electromagnetic (EM) lens. An EM lens has the ability to focus the received signal energy as a function of the angle of arrival (AoA) to a small subset/area of the antenna array at the base station (BS). Thus, it helps to estimate the DoA efficiently while minimizing the number of radio frequency (RF) chains and the associated signal processing costs. Moreover, by defining a cluster over a group of closely spaced subsets, the computational efforts of the DoA estimation algorithm can be further reduced.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have become a significant research challenge, attracting many researchers. This paper provides an overview of collaborative WSN, reviewing the algorithms, techniques and state-of-the-art developed so far. We discuss the research challenges and opportunities in this area. The major focus is given to cooperative signal and information processing in collaborative WSN in order to expose important constraints in wireless applications which require distributed computing, such as node localization, target detection and tracking. In this paper, we also present and discuss the applications of multi-agent systems into WSN as a core technology of cooperative information processing.

Position estimation is a crucial aspect of localization in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) as estimated sensor location is used in many applications of WSNs. Various localization algorithms have been developed over the time for obtaining the highest precision in location estimation. The main idea in most of the popular algorithms is to estimate the position of sensors with help of some special beacon nodes with known coordinates. Favorable method that provides a better accuracy with lowest network cost is to replace all special beacons with a single beacon equipped with GPS unit. In this case, the fundamental problem is to design a trajectory that the mobile beacon should follow which minimizes the localization error. In this paper, we provide an up-to-date state-of-the-art of the most important anchor node trajectories designed to localize static sensors. We have evaluated the performance of the existing schemes through a series of simulations in MATLAB. Furthermore, we highlight some issues experienced by these techniques.

We present a full-size engineering model of GALI - The GAmma-ray burst Localizing Instrument, composed of 362 CsI(Tl) small cubic scintillators, distributed within a small volume of similar to 2l, and read out by silicon photomultipliers. GALI can provide directional information about GRBs with high angular accuracy from angle-dependent mutual obstruction between its scintillators. Here, we demonstrate GALI's laboratory experiments with an Am-241 source, which achieved directional reconstruction of <3 degrees accuracy, in agreement with our Monte-Carlo simulations. GALI has a wide field view of the unobstructed sky. With its current cubic configuration, GALI's effective area varies between 97 cm(2) (face on) and 138 cm(2) (from the corners at 45 degrees), which is verified in the current experiment.

A linear method for TDOA estimation of frequency-hopping signal is proposed in this paper, which can provide high-precision positioning for frequency hopping signal and fast TDOA estimation. First, according to the carrier frequency and the signal bandwidth in a frequency hopping cycle, the frequency hopping signal is filtered, and perform the Hilbert transform of a frequency hopping cycle, then the Hilbert transform results were to determine the phase difference. By a number of frequency hopping cycle phase sequence of linear equations, the corresponding solution determines the frequency hopping signal TDOA estimation. The analysis and simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which can get more high precision of TDOA estimate with several frequency hopping cycles.

Self-protection in WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) has not been deeply studied because WSN has a high rate of fails. The major concern in WSN is to maximize the network's Lifetime. In this work we propose and evaluate a WSN architecture consisting of nodes grouped in cell arrays. Sensors located in arrays of directional antennas may apply strategies of self-configuration and some mechanisms to protect themselves. In this paper we present three strategies of self-protection using geometrical arrays of directional antennas and incremental RSSI measuments. These strategies are: i) changes in frequency;ii.) changes in the routing path;and Hi) increments of transmission range. We propose a general scenario to analyze different possible situations and their most important managed parameters. The results of our simulations show that our self-protection strategies and mechanism based on geometrical arrays of directional antennas are suitable for WSN.

In this paper, we propose a novel range-free localization algorithm tailored for anisotropic wireless sensors networks (WSN)s. Using the proposed algorithm, each regular or position-unaware node estimates its distances only to reliable anchors or position-aware nodes. The latter are properly chosen following a new reliable anchor selection strategy that ensures an accurate distance estimation making thereby our localization algorithm more precise. Indeed, simulations suggest that it outperforms the best representative range-free localization algorithms currently available in the literature in terms of accuracy.

Wireless sensor networks are extremely being used in different environments to perform various monitoring tasks such as search, rescue, disaster relief, target tracking and a number of tasks in smart environments. In most sensor network applications, the information gathered by micro-sensors will be meaningless unless the location from where the information is obtained is known. This makes localiza- tion capabilities highly desirable in sensor networks. Till now, various localization algorithms have been proposed to fulfill the same objective. However, all of these algorithms are dependent on various factors to get the location information like GPS devices, a large number of anchor nodes, known network topology, commu- nication cost etc. Accuracy is one more concern, which have to be look upon because it is directly dependent on the above mentioned factors. So, keeping all these things in mind, the main aim is to reduce the dependency on the anchor nodes without affecting the accuracy. Previous researches have shown the suc- cess of virtual coordinates in a wide variety of ad hoc and sensornet environments for the routing purpose. So this thesis report introduced the concept of virtual coordinates to make localization system anchor free, as well as proposed a new algorithm for the detection of boundary nodes of the network and the holes in the network having less percentage of false positivity.

Analysis of the effectiveness of transmission power control as a location privacy technique

Location privacy is an increasing source of concern for wireless users since their positions can be unwittingly estimated by malicious eavesdroppers. Transmission power control (TPC) is one of the various obfuscation techniques mentioned in the literature with the potential to provide location privacy to wireless users. This technique consists of letting the user vary the mobile node's transmission power in a way that only the nearest eavesdropper can overhear the mobile node's signals. This variation reduces the number of eavesdroppers overhearing the mobile node's transmissions, thus increasing the location error estimated by nearby eavesdroppers, thereby improving the mobile user's location privacy. Although some works have highlighted the advantages of TPC as a location privacy technique, no previous work has studied its effectiveness considering wireless channel impairments, hardware limitations, and localization algorithms used by eavesdroppers. This paper analyzes the real value of using TPC as a location privacy technique through a probabilistic model that measures the ability of TPC to effectively reduce the number of overhearing eavesdroppers. The results presented in this work show that the effectiveness of TPC is considerably affected by wireless channel impairments as well as by eavesdroppers' density. Moreover, since off-the-shelf 802.11 radios have limited transmission power levels, real test-bed experiments showed that mobile users cannot always adjust their transmission power to fulfill the required levels of TPC. This is particularly the case in densely deployed scenarios in which most of the time the required transmission power is below the radio's minimum transmission level. These results demonstrate the limited location privacy capabilities of TPC in most real-life scenarios, thus disproving previous claims that place TPC as a solution for the location privacy problem. Indoor Positioning Using Visible LED Lights: A Survey

Visible light LEDs, due to their numerous advantages, are expected to become the dominant indoor lighting technology. These lights can also be switched ON/OFF at high frequency, enabling their additional use for wireless communication and indoor positioning. In this article, visible LED light-based indoor positioning systems are surveyed and classified into two broad categories based on the receiver structure. The basic principle and architecture of each design category, along with various position computation algorithms, are discussed and compared. Finally, several new research, implementation, commercialization, and standardization challenges are identified and highlighted for this relatively novel and interesting indoor localization technology.
