It has been proven that logarithmic image processing (LIP) models provide a suitable framework for visualizing and enhancing digital images acquired by various sources. The most visible (although simplified) result of using such a model is that LIP allows the computation of graylevel addition, subtraction and multiplication with scalars within a fixed graylevel range without the use of clipping. It is claimed that a generalized LIP framework (i.e., a parameterized family of LIP models) can be constructed on the basis of the fuzzy modelling of gray level addition as an accumulation process described by the Hamacher conorm. All the existing LIP and LIP-like models are obtained as particular cases of the proposed framework in the range corresponding to real-world digital images.

While most of state-of-the-art image processing techniques were built under the so-called classical linear image processing, an alternative that presents superior behavior for specific applications comes in the form of logarithmic Type image processing (LTIP). This refers to mathematical models constructed for the representation and processing of gray tones images. In this paper we describe a general mathematical framework that allows extensions of these models by various means while preserving their mathematical properties. We propose a parametric extension of LTIP models and discuss its similarities with the human visual system. The usability of the proposed extension model is verified for an application of contrast based auto-focus in extreme lighting conditions. The closing property of the named models facilitates superior behavior when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

Asplund's metric, which is useful for pattern matching, consists in a double-sided probing, i.e. the over-graph and the sub-graph of a function are probed jointly. It has previously been defined for grey-scale images using the logarithmic image processing (LIP) framework. LIP is a non-linear model to perform operations between images while being consistent with the human visual system. Our contribution consists in extending the Asplund's metric to colour and multivariate images using the LIP framework. Asplund's metric is insensitive to lighting variations and we propose a colour variant which is robust to noise.

Log-hybrid architecture for tonal correction combined with modified un-sharp masking filter algorithm for colour image enhancement

A novel colour image enhancement architecture combining a Tonal Correction algorithm and a high frequency emphasis circular symmetric filter is implemented in hardware forming a colour image contrast enhancement system of low complexity. The architecture utilizes efficient log-domain calculations, resulting in multiplier-less operations and eliminates costly hardware division. Furthermore, the modularity of the fundamental design enables its ease of incorporation into larger and more complex designs with little modification. The design can be used for both grayscale and RGB colour images by processing each channel individually and the system can serve as a post enhancement module for improved colour rendition. The unit can be configured for the enhancement of over-exposed (too bright) and under-exposed (too dark) images based on adjustable parameters. The architecture easily fits on a basic Spartan Ill FPGA for low-cost realization evaluation and a Virtex 5 ML505 for real-time use. Results of the implementation and simulation are provided and compared with the software version and show that the system produces images with improved colour contrast and rendition compared to well known image enhancement algorithms such as RGB colour Homomorphic filtering. It also performs better than the Homomorphic filter and the MSRCR for faded colour images. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bone SPECT image reconstruction using deconvolution and wavelet transformation: Development, performance assessment and comparison in phantom and patient study with standard OSEM and resolution recovery algorithm

Purpose: The aim of this work was to introduce a new algorithm for image reconstruction in bone SPECT and to compare its performances with a commercially available standard OSEM and resolution recovery (RR) reconstruction. Materials and methods: The algorithm was built applying the Lucy-Richardson deconvolution adn logarithmic image processing to the projections. A modification of the coefficients of wavelet decomposition was used to suppress the noise. The comparison with vendor software was performed both in a phantom study, using Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR), Signal-to-Background ratio (SBR), spatial resolution and in clinical studies, by visual assessment of changes in contrast, spatial resolution and lesion detectability. Results: A change in the SNR (from 4 to 40%), an increase in the SBR (from 19 to 40%), a minor improvement in spatial resolution and a similar noise level were observed in the phantom study in comparison to the standard OSEM. A decrease in the SNR, a worse spatial resolution, but only a 3 to 13% lower SBR were achieved in comparison with the vendor supplied RR algorithm. The proposed algorithm creates patient images with better contrast and lesion detectability compared to clinically used OSEM. Compared to RR, more than half of obtained images showed better contrast and nearly half of them have better lesion detectability. Conclusion: The proposed algorithm compares favorably with the standard OSEM. Although less favorable, the comparison with RR and noise suppression algorithms, suggests that it can be used with only a slight decrease in the SBR. (C) 2014 Associazione Italiana di Fisica Medica. image enhancement performance is currently judged subjectively, with no reliable manner of quantifying the results of an enhancement. Current quantitative measures rely on linear algorithms to determine contrast, leaving room for improvement. With the introduction of more complex enhancement algorithms, there is a need for an effective method of quantifying performance to select optimal parameters. In this paper, we present a logarithmic based image enhancement measure. We demonstrate its performance on real world images. The results will show the effectiveness of our measures to select optimal enhancement parameters for the enhancement algorithms.
