The Joint Directors of Laboratories fusion model is adequate as a functional description, but falls short as a formal design guide for the application of logical inference under uncertainty for high-level information fusion. We propose a formal construct called the Scientific Inquiry fusion Theory, with three stages of explanation, prediction and generalisation aligned with the corresponding inferences of abduction, deduction and induction. We first define fusion as formal models without uncertainty, in which the corresponding logical inference patterns can be used for solving fusion problems. Then, we extend these formal models with uncertainty through probabilistic graphical models, where fusion processes are realised by statistical queries and learning algorithms based on the sound unification of Probability Theory, Mathematical logic and Machine Learning. Finally, we demonstrate the application of this formal high-level information fusion framework with an example of automated maritime security situation and threat assessment.

This paper is about the fusion of multiple knowledge sources represented using default logic. More precisely, the focus is on solving the problem that occurs when the standard-logic knowledge parts of the sources are contradictory, as default theories trivialize in this case. To overcome this problem, several candidate policies are discussed. Among them, it is shown that replacing each formula belonging to minimally unsatisfiable subformulas by a corresponding supernormal default exhibits appealing features.

In this paper, a new family of approaches to fuse inconsistent knowledge sources is introduced in a standard logical setting. They combine two preference criteria to arbitrate between conflicting information: the minimization of falsified formulas and the minimization of the number of the different atoms that are involved in those formulas. Although these criteria exhibit a syntactical flavor, the approaches are semantically-defined.

In this paper, a new approach to logic-based knowledge fusion is proposed. It is based on the use of (a form of) semaphores to solve conflicting information. It is shown that a traditional use of semaphores is not relevant in the case of an iterated fusion process. Accordingly, an adequate technique is thus proposed that allows multiple fusion steps to be performed. Technical properties of this new technique are then investigated.

Structured text is a general concept that is implicit in a variety of approaches in handling information. Syntactically, an item of structured text is a number of grammatically simple phrases together with a semantic label for each phrase. Items of structured text may be nested within larger items of structured text. Much information is potentially available as structured text including tagged text in XML, text in relational and object-oriented databases, and the output from information extraction systems in the form of instantiated templates. In previous papers, we have presented a logic-based framework for merging items of potentially inconsistent structured text [Data Knowledge Eng. 34 (2000) 305-332, Data Knowledge Eng. 2002 (in press)]. In this paper, we present fusion rules as a way of implementing logic-based fusion. fusion rules are a form of scripting language that define how structured news reports should be merged. The antecedent of a fusion rule is a call to investigate the information in the structured news reports and the background knowledge, and the consequent of a fusion rule is a formula specifying an action to be undertaken to form a merged report. It is expected that a set of fusion rules is defined for any given application. We give the syntax and mode of execution for fusion rules, and explain how the resulting actions give a merged report. We illustrate the presentation with examples of fusion rules for an application for merging weather reports. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
