ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF BOUNDED-DELAY ENCODABLE CODES FOR CONSTRAINED SYSTEMS

We present a new technique to construct sliding-block modulation codes with a small decoding window. Our method, which involves both state splitting and look-ahead encoding, crucially depends on a new, ''local'' construction method for bounded-delay codes. We apply our method to construct several new codes, all with a smaller decoding window than previously known codes for the same constraints at the same rate.

We introduce and investigate the class of bounded-delay-encodable block-decodable (BDB) codes. Several characterizations for this class of codes are given, and some construction methods, especially for one-symbol look-ahead BDB codes, are described. In another direction, we use our results to show the existence of a decision procedure for some basic coding problems.

In this paper, we introduce a new four-ary run-length-limited (d, k) = (2, 12) code for multilevel optical recording channels. This code has a simple one-codeword look-ahead encoder and a sliding block decoder. The code rate is 4/5 (bits/symbol), and the density ratio is 2.4 bits/T-min, which is larger than that of binary codes used for typical optical recording systems. The encoding and decoding rules of the proposed code are simple and easy for implementation. With the bit error rate (BER) performance evaluation, this code shows feasible to be applied in high-density multilevel optical storage systems.

We describe a (d, k) = (1, 8) runlength-limited (RLL) rate 8 / 12 code with fixed codeword length 12. The code is block-decodable;a codeword can be decoded without knowledge of preceding or succeeding codewords. The code belongs to the class of bounded delay block-decodable (BDB) codes with one symbol (8 bits) look-ahead. Due to its format, this code is particularly attractive for use in combination with error-correcting codes such as Reed-Solomon codes over the finite field GF(2(8)).

This paper addresses low frequency range powerline communications (PLC), where the transmitters are output voltage and bandwidth limited. We propose an efficient transmission method of combining Reed Solomon (RS) coding with run length limited (RLL) codes. Our proposed transmission model consists of three main parts: RS encoder followed by a one or two bit(s) look-ahead RLL encoder and 2-FSK modulator. The resulting transmission has a constant envelope signal modulation, no bandwidth expansion and more concentrated spectra in the carrier frequencies. This is an important result, directly applicable to the CENELEC band. In addition, a soft decoder based on minimum distance criteria for the RLL codes is introduced to yield an additional coding gain. We present the spectral analysis of RLL coding. Finally, the performance of the detectors is analyzed theoretically as well as through simulations.
