3-D volumetric medical images, as for example magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) images, are an important source of digital data that need lossless compression to be stored or transmitted. In this paper we propose a low complexity, lossless, compression algorithm for the compression of 3-D volumetric medical images that exploits the three-dimensional nature of the data by using 3-D linear prediction. Experimental results are reported that are comparable, and in average outperform, the state-of-art results. Moreover the algorithm we present, for its low complexity, in terms of both CPU usage and memory, is suitable to be easily used also in situations in which computing power might be an issue.

Due to the compression performance of the latest coding standard known as high efficiency video coding (HEVC), there has been a significant interest in developing a scalable version to address industry's demand for cost effective universal access of digital media. One of the issues with the scalable extension of HEVC (known as SHVC) is its computational complexity. The focus of this study is on developing complexity reduction schemes for SHVC encoder with quality/fidelity scalability. In this paper, we propose a complexity reduction scheme for quality scalable extension of HEVC with two enhancement layers. The proposed scheme potentially can make coding/transmission of several different-quality versions of the same video content in one bit-stream an attractive proposition for the content delivery industry, allowing for cost effective digital media delivery to a variety of playback display devices. Performance evaluations confirm that the proposed complexity reduction scheme reduces total SHVC's encoding time by up to 51.95% while maintaining the overall quality of the coded streams.

The scalable extension of HEVC (known as SHVC), the recent scalable video coding standard, results in an improved compression performance at the cost of significant increase in computational coding complexity. One of the main factors that contribute to the SHVC encoder complexity is choosing the best partitioning structure for the coding tree units (CTUs). Our study focuses on developing a scheme for predicting the CTU structure in the quality and spatial scalable extension of HEVC. The proposed scheme uses the CTU partitioning structure of the already encoded CTUs in the enhancement layers (ELs) and base layer (BL) to predict the coding unit sizes of the to-be-encoded CTUs in the EL. Performance evaluations confirm that our proposed complexity reduction scheme significantly reduces the execution time of the SHVC encoder, while maintaining the overall quality of the coded streams.

Fast CU size decision and PU mode decision algorithm for quality SHVC inter coding

As a scalable extension of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) encoder needs to encode multiple HEVC layers with Inter-layer predictions, which causes the significant increase in coding complexity. In this paper, we proposed a novel Inter prediction scheme to effectively reduce computational complexity in Quality SHVC. The new features of the proposed algorithm include: First, spatial and Inter-layer depth correlations are used to predict the most possible coding unit (CU) depth level candidates. Second, a statistical test method on the current CU depth level is introduced to examine whether the residual coefficients within its block present similar distribution to terminate depth selection early. Finally, during Inter prediction selection from 8 Prediction Unit (PU) sizes, spatial and Inter-layer correlations are combined with residual coefficients distribution to determine the PU partitioning mode is Symmetric Motion Partitioning (SMP) or Asymmetric Motion Partitioning (AMP). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can save an average of 65.33% coding time of enhancement layer (EL) while achieving a better rate distortion (RD) performance over other state-of-the-art work.

SHVC, the scalable extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), uses advanced inter-layer prediction features in addition to the advanced compression tools of HEVC to improve the compression performance. Using combined features has brought us improved compression performance at the cost of huge computational complexity for the SHVC encoder. This complexity is mainly because of the the inter/intra-prediction mode search of the coding units. The focus of this study is on developing an efficient complexity reduction for quality scalability of SHVC encoder, with the intention to facilitate the adoption of SHVC for real-time applications. In this regard, first, we build a probabilistic model that uses the mode information and motion homogeneity of already encoded blocks in the enhancement layer (EL) and the base layer to predict the probabilities of all the available inter/intra modes of the to-be-coded block in the EL. Then, we propose an online-learning-based fast mode, assigning (FMA) method that uses the proposed probabilistic model to predict the mode of the to-be-coded block in the EL. Performance evaluation shows that our proposed FMA method reduces the total execution time of the SHVC encoder by 45.40% on average compared with unmodified SHVC codec while maintaining the overall video quality.

This work presents a high-performance wavelet transform based image coder that is designed for image compression in a system with limited resources. In this image coder the dual-sliding wavelet transform (DSWT) is first applied to image data to generate wavelet coefficients in fixed-size blocks. Here, a block consists of wavelet coefficients only from a single subband. Then, the resulting coefficient blocks are directly coded with the low-complexity Binary Description (LCBiD) coefficient coding algorithm. No parent-child relationship is exploited in the coding process. There is no intermediate buffering needed between DSWT and LCBiD. The compressed bit stream generated by the proposed coder is both SNR and resolution scalable, as well as highly resilient to transmission errors. Both DSWT and LCBiD process the data in blocks whose size is independent of the size of the input image. This gives more flexibility in its implementation. The codec has a very good coding performance even the size of a coefficient block is as small as (16,16).

3D-HEVC is aiming at utilizing the advanced tools present in HEVC to efficiently code multiview video content. The computational complexity of this codec is significantly increased and is a challenge for real-time applications. In our study, we propose an adaptive early-termination inter and intra prediction mode search that reduces the 3D-HEVC coding complexity by utilizing the correlations between views, while maintaining the overall video quality.

The 3D extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard (3D-HEVC) aims at improving coding efficiency by introducing new and unique approaches for utilizing correlations between the different views of a scene. Reported coding efficiency, however, comes at the expense of increased computational complexity. For real-time applications, reducing the computational complexity of 3D-HEVC is very important. In this paper, we propose an adaptive fast mode assigning method based on a Bayesian classifier that reduces 3D-HEVC's coding complexity by up to 51.95%, while maintaining the overall quality and bitrate.

There has been significant interest in developing a scalable version of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. As expected, the HEVC scalable video version increases the complexity of the codec compared to the non-scalable counterpart. In this paper, we propose an adaptive early-termination interlayer motion prediction mode search that significantly reduces HEVC/SVC's coding complexity by up to 85.77%, while maintaining the overall bitrate.
