low-complexity video coding via power-rate-distortion optimization

Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) have been potentially applicable for several emerging applications. The resources, i.e., power and bandwidth available to visual sensors in a WMSN are, however, very limited. Hence, it is important but challenging to achieve efficient resource allocation and optimal video data compression while maximizing the overall network lifetime. In this paper, a power-rate-distortion (PRD) optimized resource-scalable low-complexity multiview video encoding scheme is proposed. In our video encoder, both the temporal and interview information can be exploited based on the comparisons of extracted media hashes without performing motion and disparity estimations, which are known to be time-consuming. We present a PRD model to characterize the relationship between the available resources and the RD performance of our encoder. More specifically, an RD function in terms of the percentages for different coding modes of blocks and the target bit rate under the available resource constraints is derived for optimal coding mode decision. The major goal here is to design a PRD model to optimize a "motion estimation-free" low-complexity video encoder for applications with resource-limited devices, instead of designing a general-purpose video codec to compete compression performance against current compression standards (e.g., H.264/AVC). Analytic results verify the accuracy of our PRD model, which can provide a theoretical guideline for performance optimization under limited resource constraints. Simulation results on joint RD performance and power consumption (measured in terms of encoding time) demonstrate the applicability of our video coding scheme for WMSNs. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Wireless visual sensor networks are potentially applicable for several emerging applications. Since the resource-limited restriction for a visual sensor node (VSN), efficient resource allocation for video compression is challenging. In this paper, a power-rate-distortion (PRD) model-based low-complexity multiview video codec is proposed. Our PRD model is used to characterize the relationship between the available resources and the RD performance of our video codec. More specifically, an P D function in terms of the percentages for different coding modes of blocks and the target bit rate under the available resource constraints is derived for optimal coding mode decision. Analytic and simulation results are provided to verify the resource scalability and accuracy of our PRD model in facilitating our low-complexity multiview video codec to achieve good performance.

This paper is dedicated to entropy coding for scalable video compression based on three-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (3-D DWT). A new simple bit-plane entropy coding of wavelet subband matrices is proposed. Practical results show that 3-D DWT video codec with proposed entropy coding allows to increase the encoding speed 2-3 times for the same quality level in comparison with x. 264 codec which is one of the fastest software implementation of H.264/AVC standard.

To meet the requirements of resource-limited video sensors, low-complexity video encoding technique is highly desired. In this paper, a low-complexity multi-view distributed video encoding scheme by using the correlations among video frames from adjacent video sensor nodes (VSNs) via robust media hashing at encoder and the global motion parameters estimated and fed back from the decoder is proposed. The frames from adjacent VSNs are warped into the same view-direction based on the global motion parameters. Then, the significant differences between the warped key frame and the non-key frame from adjacent VSNs are efficiently extracted based on robust media hashing for non-key frame compression. The key is that few data (hash information) exchanges among adjacent VSNs are allowed to efficiently exploit the correlations among VSNs. The coding performance and energy consumption of the proposed encoder have been verified through simulations and comparisons with existing low-complexity video encoders.

Distributed coding is a new paradigm for video compression, based on Slepian and Wolf's and Wyner and Ziv's information-theoretic results from the 1970s. This paper reviews the recent development of practical distributed video coding schemes, Wyner-Ziv coding, i.e., lossy compression with receiver side information, enables low-complexity video encoding where the bulk of the computation is shifted to the decoder. Since the interframe dependence of the video sequence is exploited only at the decoder, an intraframe encoder can be combined with an interframe decoder. The rate-distortion performance is superior to conventional intraframe coding, but there is still a gap relative to conventional motion-compensated interframe coding. Wyner-Ziv coding is naturally robust against transmission errors and can be used for joint source-channel coding. A Wyner-Ziv MPEG encoder that protects the video waveform rather than the compressed bit stream achieves graceful degradation under deteriorating channel conditions without a layered signal representation.

Compared with conventional encoding methods, Distributed video coding (DVC) has superiority in encoding speed. However, DVC is difficult to exhibit its advantages in fast video encoding in practical applications because it has the problem of insufficient compression ratio and no hardware accelerated chip support. In practical applications, how to effectively use general hardware resources with improved compression ratio is a significant challenge. By implementation, we realized an DVC encoder on Raspberry Pi device. In order to improve the compression ratio of DVC, we used a transform-domain DVC coding method based on frame difference, which can employ the correlation between neighboring frames to reduce the encoding cost of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) for those blocks with low motion amplitude, thereby reducing the bandwidth required for transmission of them. This method can improve the compression ratio without increasing excessive calculation in the encoding operation. In the implementation, we try to use video Core (VC) chip of Raspberry Pi and OpenCV4 library for DCT calculation to speed up the DVC encoding process.

Compressed Sensing (CS) is a new approach to signal acquisition that can potentially allow us to design very simple video encoders that can be implemented on mobile devices with limited resources. However, previously proposed CS based video codec either require a conventional video codec or a feedback channel for effective operation, thus increasing the complexity. In this paper, a distributed Compressed video Sensing codec is proposed that only makes use of CS at the encoder. A novel Side Information generation scheme is incorporated in the decoder which exploits the correlation between CS measurements of nearby frames. It is much simpler than other schemes found in the literature and yet effective. Simulation results demonstrate that effective video coding can be achieved using this codec.

Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) emerge as a solution in wireless unattended video surveillance scenarios. The G-E-M methodology was recently introduced by Czarlinska et al. to address the problem providing protection to visual wireless surveillance systems in the presence of another hostile sensing system. This work builds upon the G-E-M framework by introducing pre- and post-processing stages that reduce decoding errors and visual noise as well as allowing the effective control of bitrate.

We address an important issue of fully low-cost and low-complexity video encoding for use in resource limited sensors/devices. Conventional distributed video coding (DVC) does not actually meet this requirement because the acquisition of video sequences still relies on the high-cost mechanism (sampling + compression). Recently, we have proposed a distributed compressive video sensing (DCVS) framework to directly capture compressed video data called measurements, while exploiting correlations among successive frames for video reconstruction at the decoder. The core is to integrate the respective characteristics of DVC and compressive sensing (CS) to achieve CS-based single-pixel camera-compatible video encoder. At DCVS decoder, video reconstruction can be formulated as a convex unconstrained optimization problem via solving the sparse coefficients with respect to some basis functions. Nevertheless, the issue of measurement rate allocation has not been considered yet in the literature. Actually, different measurement rates should be adaptively assigned to different local regions by considering the sparsity of each region for improving reconstructed quality. This paper investigates dynamic measurement rate allocation in block-based DCVS, which can adaptively adjust measurement rates by estimating the sparsity of each block via feedback information. Simulation results have indicated the effectiveness of our scheme. It is worth noting that our goal is to develop a novel fully low-complexity video compression paradigm via the emerging compressive sensing and sparse representation technologies, and provide an alternative scheme adaptive to the environment, where raw video data is not available, instead of competing compression performances against the current compression standards (e.g., H.264/AVC) or DVC schemes which need raw data available for encoding.
