A medium access control protocol Based on Parity Group-Graph Coloring for Underwater AUV-Aided Data Collection

Data collection and transmission is the foundation for Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) applications. Currently, quite a few autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-assisted data collection technologies have been proposed. Most of them concentrate on AUV path planning or multipath routing for data transmission, although MAC protocol design is crucial for reliable and secure data transmission in IoUT;hence, a MAC protocol based on parity group-graph coloring (PGGC-MAC) is investigated for underwater AUV-aided data collection. First, the AUV broadcasts path packets before data collection, informing sensor nodes of the path to travel in advance. Then, sensor nodes perform location update before AUV arrives, and collect the location information of neighbor nodes. Based on the position and the path information, the dynamic network topology is analyzed and the interference graph is obtained, which is used to assign working time slots for sensor nodes to transmit packets to the AUV. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that PGGC-MAC outperforms other related techniques in terms of network throughput, packet delivery ratio, energy usage, etc.

This paper proposes an energy-efficient hybrid medium access control protocol based on precise control of duty cycle. To save energy, the proposed protocol optimally adjusts the trans-receiver radio's turn-on and off time. By estimating slot utilization, both the cluster head and the sensing devices save energy. During the reserved slot duration, each sensor device periodically checks its buffer status and turns off its radio when the buffer becomes empty. Each sensor device sends a slot utilisation status to the cluster head device. The cluster head device also turns its radio on and off based on the slot utilisation status of sensing devices. For optimal energy consumption, a duty cycle approach is proposed. According to the mathematical and simulation results, the proposed protocol consumes less energy than existing equivalent protocols. Simulation results depict, exactly similar results of analytical and mathematical analysis prove the validity of the work.

Machine Learning for medium access control protocol Recognition in Communications Networks

The ability to recognize the medium access control protocol employed by a network can facilitate the incorporation of a cognitive radio into an existing network by elucidating an integral aspect of network behavior. Since the way in which users access the electromagnetic spectrum is one of the most prominent distinctions between reservation based and contention based medium access control protocols, the first part of this work exploits the regular timing of transmissions from networks utilizing reservation based time-division multiple access (TDMA) protocols to differentiate between transmissions governed by TDMA and by contention based carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) protocols. Our approach leverages modular arithmetic to identify periodicity in transmission timings and an unsupervised k-means algorithm to generate distinct TDMA and CSMA clusters. Several supervised machine learning algorithms are explored to build a protocol classifier. We then present a method of distinguishing between transmissions from multi-channel frequency division multiple access (FDMA) based networks and single channel networks. This method uses an automated machine learning clustering algorithm to obtain an estimate of the actual center frequencies of channels utilized by a network. Such information can be used to determine whether the network is employing an FDMA protocol to access the electromagnetic spectrum.

Exploiting full-duplex opportunities in WLANs via a reinforcement learning-based medium access control protocol

In-band full-duplex communication has the potential to double the wireless channel capacity. However, how to efficiently transform the full-duplex gain at the physical layer into network throughput improvement is still a challenge, especially in dynamic communication environments. This paper presents a reinforcement learning-based full-duplex (RLFD) medium access control (MAC) protocol for wireless local-area networks (WLANs) with full-duplex access points. To solve the channel contention problem and fully utilize the full-duplex transmission opportunities, we first design a two-way handshake transmission mechanism and make an investigation on the effects of transmission scheduling in full-duplex transmission. Then the transmission scheduling problem is theoretically formulated as a non-stationary multi-armed bandit problem in which our objective is to maximize the network throughput. Thus, we develop a Window-Constraint Bayesian (WCB) algorithm to generate optimized scheduling policies online. And full-duplex opportunities are fully utilized by transmitting packets according to the optimized scheduling policies. Besides, an analytical model is developed to characterize the performance of RLFD. The performance of RLFD is evaluated by simulation. And the results show that RLFD can improve the network throughput by 80% compared with the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function with Request-To-Send/Clear-To-Send. Moreover, with the proposed WCB algorithm, the network throughput can remain steady as the communication environment dynamically changes.

Passive optical interconnects (POIs) have recently been considered as a promising solution to offer high bandwidth and low power consumption for data center networks. This paper proposes a medium access control protocol for a POI based on arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) to facilitate efficient collision-free communications. In order to efficiently accommodate bursty traffic generated by the servers in the data center, we develop a tailored dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm, which is able to schedule resources in both time and spectrum. In the simulation, not only the impact of DBA algorithm parameters but also the system configurations, such as wavelength tuning time, line rate, and the size of the interconnect, have been investigated. For a typical link utilization on an optical interconnect at the top of the rack, the proposed resource allocation scheme ensures both low latency (<0.1 ms) and a low frame drop ratio (almost zero).

Distributed medium access control protocol for Successive Interference Cancellation-Based Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Successive interference cancellation (SIC) enables the successful reception of multiple concurrent transmissions and elimination of interference through successive decoding. However, previously proposed distributed medium access control protocols have not exploited SIC. They mostly focused on either interference avoidance, based on the assumption that a receiver can only decode one transmission at a time, or self-interference cancellation, where a node can be a receiver and a transmitter at the same time. In this letter, we propose the first distributed communication protocol for SIC-based wireless networks, based on a novel message exchange and decision mechanism, to enable the simultaneous transmission of multiple neighboring nodes around the transmitter and receiver. The message exchange allows a random subset of neighboring nodes to test the feasibility of their simultaneous transmission. The decision mechanism evaluates the successive decoding capability of SIC receivers with the additional activation of neighboring nodes. We demonstrate the throughput improvement of the proposed algorithm via extensive simulations.

A novel hybrid medium access control protocol for inter-M2M communications

A scalable medium access control (MAC) protocol is crucial for machine-type devices to access the channel simultaneously in a machine-to-machine (M2M) network. There can be two types of scenarios in an M2M network. First, where the M2M devices communicate with the base station one-by-one, and second, where the M2M devices directly communicate with each other within a group or cluster without any human intervention (Inter-M2M communication). Considering the second type of scenario, the devices can use basic contention or reservation-based MAC protocols. But with such a large number of M2M devices, adaptability, and scalability become bottlenecks. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel scalable hybrid-MAC protocol, which combines the benefits of both contention-based and reservation-based medium access schemes. We assume that the contention and reservation portion of M2M devices is a frame structure, which mainly has two parts: contention interval (CI) and data transmission interval (DTI). The devices contend for the channel access during CI. After contention, the successful devices win time-slots and transmit data packets during DTI. In our proposed hybrid-MAC scheme, each M2M device is IEEE 802.11 DCF enabled, and within each time slot during DTI, the devices share data with each other. The analytical and simulation results show that the proposed hybrid-MAC protocol performs better than slotted-ALOHA, p-persistent CSMA, and TDMA in terms of aggregate throughput, average transmission delay, channel utility, and energy consumption. This paper introduces the Dynamic HMARS (DHMARS) protocol designed for the Hybrid Radio-over-Fiber Wireless Sensors Network (WSN-RoF) architecture, in which multiple clusters of wireless sensor nodes are connected to a base station via an optical link using Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) technology. The D-HMARS protocol was designed to avoid the problem of occurrence of false positive in the Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) mechanism. Simulation results show that the D-HMARS protocol increases the delivery ratio as well as the effective throughput of the network.

In a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), medium access control (MAC) protocol is a key component to extend the lifetime of the WSN consisting of sensor nodes. Receiver-Initiated MAC (RI-MAC) is designed to reduce the energy consumed in the idle listening. RI-MAC may not spend energy efficiently since the data frame may collide frequently in the heavy traffic condition. We have proposed the Receiver-initiated Hybrid access MAC (RHA-MAC) protocol which uses both scheduled and random access. We have implemented our RHA-MAC into the TinyOS platform. The throughput performance shows that our proposed RHA-MAC outperforms compared with RI-MAC under the heavy traffic condition.
