Several middleware solutions have been proposed for supporting development of networked mobile applications, which are often designed with different distribution requirements and for various application scenarios. In this sense, a middleware that offers only a single communication paradigm (e.g., publish/subscribe) cannot cope with the diversity of applications and its reuse becomes very limited. In this context, this paper goal is to propose a mobile middleware solution which offers a set of communication paradigms, ranging from the traditional synchronous model to different variations of the so-called asynchronous models. In order to optimize memory footprint, common features in distributed communication are shared among all communication paradigms. Additionally, by means of a product line-based design, features can be selected and thus the middleware can be customized to better fit in more constrained devices.

Messaging systems, which include message brokers built on top of message-oriented middleware, have been used as middleware components in many enterprise application integration projects. There are many COTS-based messaging systems on the market, but there is little concrete understanding in the software industry on the performance of these different technologies. The authors have carried out a scenario-based evaluation of three leading messaging systems to provide insight into performance issues. The evaluation process includes a study of the sustained performance of the system under load. The result of this study is used to derive a generic metric for quantifying a messaging system's performance. The paper describes a synthetic transactional scenario, which is used for load tests and performance measurement. The results from executing this test scenario with three messaging systems are then presented and explained. Copyright (C) 2003 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

The future data-driven manufacturing ecosystems build upon data spaces where each participant controls how its own data are utilized. This goal is equally important in machinery where the networks comprise machine fleets and the data use cases range from local edge to various cloud systems and digital business integrations. These systems of systems require efficient, scalable data streaming with decoupled (e.g., publish-subscribe) platforms that enable the flexible connection of data producers and consumers in heterogeneous networks. This paper describes a work in progress about data autonomy, sovereignty, and trust in message brokers in machinery, aiming to contribute to initiatives, such as Gaia-X and International Data Spaces (IDS). First, the paper identifies requirements for platforms and communication that span edge and cloud. Second, it presents a technology survey about data autonomy in open, Internet-cabable brokers. These include Advanced message Queueing Protocol (AMQP), MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT), Apache Kafka and Apache Pulsar. It appears that there is little research about data autonomy in brokers and MQTT has the strongest base. The work continues to develop data autonomy into a message broker.

The software powering today's vehicles surpasses mechatronics as the dominating engineering challenge due to its fast evolving and innovative nature. In addition, the software and system architecture for upcoming vehicles with automated driving functionality is already processing similar to 750MB/s - corresponding to over 180 simultaneous 4K-video streams from popular video-on-demand services. Hence, self-driving cars will run so much software to resemble "small data centers on wheels" rather than just transportation vehicles. Continuous Integration, Deployment, and Experimentation have been successfully adopted for software-only products as enabling methodology for feedback-based software development. For example, a popular search engine conducts similar to 250 experiments each day to improve the software based on its users' behavior. This work investigates design criteria for the software architecture and the corresponding software development and deployment process for complex cyber-physical systems, with the goal of enabling Continuous Experimentation as a way to achieve continuous software evolution. Our research involved reviewing related literature on the topic to extract relevant design requirements. The study is concluded by describing the software development and deployment process and software architecture adopted by our self-driving vehicle laboratory, both based on the extracted criteria.

To obtain good performance in messaging over mobile networks, we have developed a Gateway. Gateway is a message hub that transmits information using store-and-forward messaging and provides powerful optimization and data transformation. The SmartCaching component provides generic caching in an N-tier architecture, an essential function of Gateway. Gateway can be integrated into Pronto, a middleware system for mobile applications with messaging as a basis [15]. Pronto then offers: 1) a lightweight client of message oriented middleware (MOM) based on Java message Service(JMS), 2) Gateway for reliable and efficient transmission between mobile devices and a server and 3) Serverless JMS based on IP multicast. Integration of Gateway within Pronto provides a solution for mobile application-specific problems such as resource constraints, network characteristics, and data optimization.

Cloud computing changes the conventional way of virtualization resource allocation, and gives users high flexibility and convenience. However, when the cloud service providers offer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), there are many practical problems to be resolved. We propose a cloud system's prototype, through a composition of cloud services to automate workflow and exchange data between services based on message-oriented middleware, and then achieve the goal of virtualization platform integration. We develop efficient schemes for users to use functions, which include a single web portal, virtual machine templates and message translation, to quickly deploy virtual machines in a large-scale.

Many Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications for smart homes, connected factories, or car-to-car communication utilize broker-based publish/subscribe communication protocols, such as the MQTT protocol. Commercial IoT applications have high reliability requirements for messaging, as lost messages due to unstable Internet connections or node failures can harm devices or even human beings. MQTT brokers implement numerous architectural availability tactics, but former analyses of MQTT communication have mainly focused on performance measurements under stable conditions. We have created the MAYHEM resilience testing tool for MQTT brokers and applied it in various resilience experiments on different MQTT brokers (VerneMQ, Mosquitto, HiveMQ, EMQ X). We found that MQTT QoS level 0 is already robust against minor packet loss, that selected broker message persistency solutions can lead to lost messages, and that most clustered MQTT brokers favor availability and performance over communication integrity. The results can support IoT practitioners in architectural decisions and researchers as well as broker vendors in optimizing designs and implementations.

With the rapid development of telecommunication technology, the scale of network grows larger and larger, and network management becomes more and more complicated because of the diversity of business. It is rather urgent to build a unified network management service platform to effectively integrate all the net-work management subsystems and supply the integrated service. In building such platform, one of the biggest challenges is how to process complex events. This paper proposes a new platform named Network Management Service Platform for Complex Event Processing (C-NMSP). We firstly present a complex event processing model based on the relational algebra, as well as the definition and description of C-NMSP based on Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), and then give the main algorithms of complex event processing and their performance analysis. Experiments results show that C-NMSP performs much better than the existing ESB based systems in complex event processing.
